treis··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
Meh those sound mostly like pilots and AFAIK most of this stuff didn't last long.

I agree that at some point it stopped being a pilot and started being a product. So not that interested in arguing exactly when that happened.

treis··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
It wasn't a product

LLMs are not and Llama did pretty much exactly what this type of program encourages. It was a pilot that made no money, was thrown away, and spurred a ton of independent research.

This is also a weird split brain with HN. Half the front page is mocking companies for throwing away money on AI. That Chinese models (which surely got a huge boost from LLaMa) are going to render all this investment a gigantic loss.

treis··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
I think that's shaky but also that's OpenAI and not Meta. Up until whenever Muse was launched Meta didn't have anything I'd call a LLM product.

We aren't expected to. We (or our elected representatives) passed a law saying that experimental spending gets tax breaks. And I don't really see an argument that LLMs aren't in an experimental phase.
treis··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
Does anyone have the actual doc or are we now getting articles about articles.
treis··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
No, the demand is effectively infinite at the moment and models are getting cheaper to serve. At least for a while price will go down when keeping capabilities constant.
treis··on 12,000-year-old Göbeklitepe burials explain scattered bones
We don't bury everyone under churches, however as we would quickly run out of room.
treis··on Joseph Szabo’s pictures of American adolescents
Why? We brought numbers for one specific issue and you ignored them.

The first item on your new list is absurd. The 70s are the decade that coined the term stagflation. To be nostalgic for the 70s because of the value of the dollar is wild.

treis··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Sports gambling definitely existed 10-15 years ago. And it's hard to ban things on the internet with cryptocurrency being a thing.

It's pretty wild that we let it be advertised and boggles my mind that pro leagues jumped on the train.

treis··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Wine is or can be near the bottom in terms of doller per alcohol. It's just become a bit old fashioned.

The trend is the same adjusting for inflation

Okay, so even with a more expensive metric unemployment is still better today.

Also, remind me how many of y'all were drafted to go fight in Nam?

How tf should I know? I'm simply answering the question.
treis··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
They're absolutely being used to solve crimes and arrest people. Here's two examples:

https://www.wsbradio.com/news/local/cobb-police-credit-new-t...

There's some studies showing support but it's very hard to attribute cause to a crime rate that constantly fluctuates and has a myriad of causes

Unemployment peaked at 9% in the 70s. It was a period of war and energy crisis. I assure you kids have it far better today.
treis··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Most of the draw down was after Russia invaded Ukraine. This drawdown is a swap of 1 barrel now for 1.25 barrels later. So the intention is to keep prices down now and get more oil back later for "free".
treis··on World Labs Is Joining AMD
The ecosystem around LLMs is becoming just as or more important than the model. Having fast access to a web crawl and other reference material is important.

Seems like you'd quickly run out of floor and/or end up with a lot of bodies in one place. And are you chipping up your plaster floor every time someone dies? I'm pretty skeptical that this makes sense as a practice. Seems far more likely that a building was built over a forgotten grave.
treis··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
But that is what the land tax folks are doing. They want dense cities and transit. They tax the "undesirable behavior" i.e. parking lots and lower density usage.
treis··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Eh, my marriage fell into this but it was because my ex refused to get a job, didn't think men were equally capable of parenting, and frankly invented a lot of work. It doesn't help that doctors, teachers, nurses, other parents, schools, and so talked to her by default. To be a truly equal parent or a primary parent as a father is swimming against the current.
treis··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I don't think anyone should really believe in Rails at this point. It was a monumental leap forward at the time but other stacks have shown that there are better ways.
treis··on Tokens Too Cheap to Meter
Think of it like spending $1 trillion to become the next Google. That hardware itself may never turn a profit. But if 10 years for now you're the software provider that owns the ecosystem around too cheap to meter tokens you've got a money printing machine.
treis··on I said no and Apple said yes
They're the next step in UI for computers. Telling codex to add a network interface is easier than a GUI which is easier than a terminal program which is easier than manually editing a config file. None of those are a crutch. They are increasingly useful tools.
treis··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
I am skeptical of this as well but slot machines are programmable and the house can change the odds.
treis··on Flock is rolling out a voluntary severance program
Plenty of people support Flock or at least its mission. They're just not vocal because the opposition is vociferous. Like most things the country is fairly divided. This poll has it 46% opposed and 38% support:

The US does not have a shortage of deer. Mostly the opposite as their natural predators have been drastically reduced in numbers.

treis··on We must pace the frontier
But MAD means you can't use them. It might save you from an all out killbot invasion but it doesn't stop asymmetric warfare or being cutoff from the rest of the world.
