treis··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
But that is what the land tax folks are doing. They want dense cities and transit. They tax the "undesirable behavior" i.e. parking lots and lower density usage.
treis··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Eh, my marriage fell into this but it was because my ex refused to get a job, didn't think men were equally capable of parenting, and frankly invented a lot of work. It doesn't help that doctors, teachers, nurses, other parents, schools, and so talked to her by default. To be a truly equal parent or a primary parent as a father is swimming against the current.
treis··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I don't think anyone should really believe in Rails at this point. It was a monumental leap forward at the time but other stacks have shown that there are better ways.
treis··on Tokens Too Cheap to Meter
Think of it like spending $1 trillion to become the next Google. That hardware itself may never turn a profit. But if 10 years for now you're the software provider that owns the ecosystem around too cheap to meter tokens you've got a money printing machine.
treis··on I said no and Apple said yes
They're the next step in UI for computers. Telling codex to add a network interface is easier than a GUI which is easier than a terminal program which is easier than manually editing a config file. None of those are a crutch. They are increasingly useful tools.
treis··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
I am skeptical of this as well but slot machines are programmable and the house can change the odds.
treis··on Flock is rolling out a voluntary severance program
Plenty of people support Flock or at least its mission. They're just not vocal because the opposition is vociferous. Like most things the country is fairly divided. This poll has it 46% opposed and 38% support:

treis··on Largest wildlife overpass in North America reduced wildlife collision by 91%
The US does not have a shortage of deer. Mostly the opposite as their natural predators have been drastically reduced in numbers.
treis··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
Speed of construction is also not the same as efficiency.
treis··on We must pace the frontier
But MAD means you can't use them. It might save you from an all out killbot invasion but it doesn't stop asymmetric warfare or being cutoff from the rest of the world.
treis··on We must pace the frontier
I don't think this adds up. The AGI blocks will have AGI kill bots and those that don't won't have a choice about what they will or will not allow.
treis··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
They didn't want his name removed from any paper. The invitation was to write a new joint paper between Buckmaster and OpenAI. An invitation Alpoge couldn't accept and OpenAI wouldn't make since he worked for a competitor.
treis··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
This doesn't really make sense. You don't need massive amounts of computing to plagiarize something.

The most nefarious explanation seems to be that they got wind it was possible to solve NS via LLMs and perhaps a small nudge in the right direction.

treis··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
This seems unsupported. OpenAI has access to internal models that the general public doesn't have and a compute budget that dwarfs what an NYU professor would have.
treis··on Young Americans have never witnessed a functioning foreign policy
My perpetual reminder that this "healthy America" never existed. As far as generations go Millennials have it easier than the Vietnam, WWII, and WWI/Great Depression generations.
treis··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
It absolutely has for me. Hours/days out of a month of smashing my head against silly bugs or SQL syntax errors have gone away.

I will agree that some of the savings has been eaten up elsewhere. Lots of trivial but not wrong PR comments ther lead to churn as an example.

treis··on GMails custom domain "send as" discontinues January 2027
Looks like it's still allowed in app. Probably a way to cut down spam and push people to the app.
treis··on Uber is laying off 10% of staff
Think it's more like the worst thing that can happen to a Roman army unit happened to us.
treis··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
Housework is the obvious use case.
treis··on I'm becoming AI-blind
It feels like it's getting better at that too. It will push back against obvious nonsense a lot stronger. But you are right that it holds opinions quite a bit less strenuously than humans.
treis··on I'm becoming AI-blind
This is a tell of LLMs but it's not universal. I use ChatGPT extensively and I don't often get obvious nonsense any more.

I'd figure out that it's an LLM because it's effectively superhuman. Taking that away I'm not so sure I'd be able to tell

treis··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
I'm responding to the idea that police in the absence of flock is totally fine.
treis··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
I don't understand your point
treis··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
I don't know. Since the advent of cameras we've caught a lot of cops beating the hell out of citizens. It probably happened a lot more before cameras. And then you'd catch a charge for resisting instead of the payout today.
treis··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
Practical experience is that people cycle through ADHD and depression meds. I agree that it's hard to tell what that means because we don't generally do long term double blind placebo studies.
treis··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
For me, historically drugs like this for ADHD or depression or gastric bypass or whatever tend to lose effectiveness over time as the body adjusts. Not for everyone but for enough where you've got a short term gain that ultimately compounds the original problem.

Medication can be a slippery slope into side effects and rotating dosages/medicines. Especially for behavioral medicines.

treis··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
Definitely one of the most unexpected bits of WFH is to show up to an onsite and find out your coworker is 6'5".
treis··on To recruit teachers, school districts are building homes
Sure there's some pressure but as you note it comes from the communities that couldn't stop their school from being closed. So ultimately it's a lot of noise that doesn't lead to much action.
treis··on To recruit teachers, school districts are building homes
The other half of this is that with declining enrollment city school districts are finding themselves with a lot of land. They don't feel any pressure to sell the land. Nor do they feel any pressure to use it for other government services.
