treefarmer··on Tell HN: Litellm 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 on PyPI are compromised
If you're talking about their proxy offering, I had this exact same issue and switched to Portkey. I just use their free plan and don't care about the logs (I log separately on my own). It's way faster (probably cause their code isn't garbage like the LiteLLM code - they had a 5K+ line Python file with all their important code in it the last time I checked).
treefarmer··on Price of rice in Japan falls below ¥4k per 5kg
Yeah, as someone who started with Costco rice and slowly moved up the quality chain, there is a clear difference in taste between even average Japanese rice and most Costco rice. It would be interesting to see a price/quality comparison between the U.S. and Japanese Costcos though.
treefarmer··on GitHub CEO: manual coding remains key despite AI boom
I get a 403 forbidden error when trying to view the page. Anyone else get that?
treefarmer··on I don't like NumPy
Yeah, in case anyone else has the misfortune of having to work with multi-dimensional data in MATLAB, I'd recommend the Tensor Toolbox, Tensorlab, or the N-way Toolbox.
treefarmer··on Undergraduate Disproves 40-Year-Old Conjecture, Invents New Kind of Hash Table
It is not, other than sometimes in the case of equal contribution. The first and sometimes second authors are the most important, and the last author is often the advisor/senior researcher supervising the work.
treefarmer··on I tasted Honda's spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
He also permanently damaged his sense of smell/taste, so I feel like he might not be the most reliable source...
treefarmer··on AI realtime mock interview tool
Has anyone actually tried any of these AI interview tools? From their website, it looks like the interviews are extremely short (max duration of 20 minutes?), even if you pay $55+/mo, which really limits its utility.
treefarmer··on Add "fucking" to your Google searches to neutralize AI summaries
The downside of this approach is that it can affect the search results returned. But I found that if you add " -fuck" or " -fucking" to your search term, it disables the AI summary without significantly affecting your search results (unless you happen to be looking for content of a certain kind).
treefarmer··on Show HN: SeekStorm – open-source sub-millisecond search in Rust
Is there distributed server support? I see it on the list of new features with (currently PoC) next to it, but is the code for the PoC available anywhere?

Also, would there be any potential issues if the index was mounted on shared storage between multiple instances?

treefarmer··on Prompt Injecting Your Way to Shell: OpenAI's Containerized ChatGPT Environment
The content and idea of the article are interesting but the writing is so terrible that I couldn't bring myself to finish it. The article is clearly written/augmented poorly by AI because of how many meaningless paragraphs (that convey absolutely zero information) there are.
treefarmer··on Embeddings are underrated
Yeah, this is the main issue with the suggestion. Embeddings can only be compared to each other if they are in the same space (e.g., generated by the same model). Providing embeddings of a specific kind would require users to use the same model, which can quickly become problematic if you're using a closed-source embedding model (like OpenAI's or Cohere's).
treefarmer··on Make It Yourself
Had the same thought - it's also annoying to update the PDF once links die, so I doubt that'll happen often. I guess it might be helpful if you want it as a coffee table book...
treefarmer··on AI Flame Graphs
Would love it if it was available and open source so people could use it in their own projects (or on their own hardware), instead of only being available on Intel's AI Cloud. But cool idea and execution nevertheless!
treefarmer··on Critique of Freakonomics interview with psychologist Ellen Langer
For those interested in hearing more about the criticism behind Freakonomics, there is an If Books Could Kill podcast episode going over it: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5wHpooGMRsSBrUHhQZbOZp

I don't agree with all of their criticism but it contains many valid points

treefarmer··on Pg_parquet: An extension to connect Postgres and parquet
Yeah, I'm still surprised they haven't added a list of unsupported extensions (that you can add but they're not responsible for the performance of).
treefarmer··on Show HN: A fair Product Hunt alternative
But then you have a paid "featured" tier, along with a leaderboard showing the most upvoted ones. How is this different from ProductHunt in the end? Isn't it still pay to win?
treefarmer··on Helping wikis move away from Fandom
And god forbid you use a VPN and try to do anything on a Cloudflare site
