trebligdivad··on EDG C++ front-end goes public
It's got history! That's really unusual for moves to open-source; the dates on the earliest commits are in 1990 and they do go forward in time so that's really unusual to have that much history. I bet there's some fun stuff in there.
trebligdivad··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
Hey Donal, long time! Great to see you still involved.
trebligdivad··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
Tcl/Tk has got to be the easiest GUI system out there; you can get simple stuff going with no effort - nothing I've seen comes close to that simplicity.

Good to see it's getting some modern support.

trebligdivad··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
What proportion of commercial LLM use is classification? I'm just wondering what happens to business AI spending/data centre usage when they realise they don't need full LLMs.
trebligdivad··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
Oh that's a fun use - I'd heard some data centres were using fuel cells/mains-gas as a back up power source but using it as main power is interesting.
trebligdivad··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Real time processing of satellite imagery is one.
trebligdivad··on MUNI Heritage Weekend in San Francisco
They're great - I'm pleasantly surprised there's no blur on the people.
trebligdivad··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
I was hoping that MME would have solved the phobos->orbiter part :-); so then you just have to get mars->phobos - you don't have to get a rendezvous for that - you just have to land intact on phobos. You can try this a few times until you manage it; only once it's sitting on Phobos do you send the equivalent of MME to collect it.
trebligdivad··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
The Japanese 'Martian Moons exploration' mission is launching to Phobos next month and doing a sample return; how hard would a martian to phobos sample moving mission be that could then be collected off Phobos sometime?
trebligdivad··on Salesforce Global Outage
What I'm curious about is why it is a single-PaaS; I'd have expected Salesforce to have the customers quite isolated so the chance of bringing down multiple customers at once was much smaller.
trebligdivad··on Show HN: Pelican-bicycle alternatives
Yes; I found it fun they all decided telescopes should be repaired at night.
trebligdivad··on US Customs supervisor busted for stealing hardware from Homeland Security PCs
IMHO a bigger worry is if they were opening the case then they could have modified it for spying or changing contents. I'd have thought stuff like this should have case alarm notification and inventory change alerts.
trebligdivad··on Ask HN: UK Rescue Rocket Sheds/Houses Information
Have you tried the RNLI or lighthouses associations?
trebligdivad··on Ask HN: UK Rescue Rocket Sheds/Houses Information
Yes, looks like it: https://heritage.wicklowheritage.org/topics/topics-miscellan...
trebligdivad··on AI Policy
I read that as dbus-hell and got confused.
trebligdivad··on Microduck
Oh so this is why Nvidia (edit: trying to buy)/bought Hugging Face, $1B for all the ai sharing and stuff, and $12B for the duck!
trebligdivad··on Mythic's analog compute-in-memory architecture
I'd assume it does some type of calibrate per device (regularly?) or the design is such that it's differential so things cancel out. Note it's also on 28nm for the analogue bits because yes it's harder.
trebligdivad··on Judge sets framework for Nine PBS to retrieve archival data
They couldn't really - I doubt Iron Mountain actually objected to giving the data, but in the end it probably wasn't in a position to know what data belonged to PBS and what belonged to other clients of OSS and you'd get very worried if a data storage company gave a companies data to someone else without authorisation.
trebligdivad··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
That was the belief - but it was found it was possible to grow E.coli on non-chiral molecules that are commonly available. The worry then is that the immune system will ignore the wrong-chirality infection.

trebligdivad··on Chestnut – eGPU dock with open-source firmware
This bridge - does it actually support host PCIe->thunderbolt->PCIe device - my reading of it is that it's just handling USB commands that the bridge is turning into separate PCIe commands to the GPU?
trebligdivad··on Z.ai Security Disclosure
The translation of that page says the origin of th earliest bug found was 1981 - wth was that?
trebligdivad··on Parametron: 50s Japanese computer that uses neither transistors nor vacuum tubes
Thanks; I hadn't realised the 803 used a mix - what was the choice of which to use for a particular circuit?
trebligdivad··on Parametron: 50s Japanese computer that uses neither transistors nor vacuum tubes
The Elliott 803 computer (a little later) also used magnetic core logic; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_803

Not sure if the principal is similar or not. (There was one down at the Bletchley computing museum many years ago when I went down)

trebligdivad··on Assembly Hall of Shame
Yeh that's a really nice one; I don't see anything in that suggesting it's been fixed (or even reported?)
trebligdivad··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
What, even if it means you can run models without relying on the currently backlogged DRAM production?
trebligdivad··on Oracle cut its Always Free ARM limits to 2 OCPU / 12GB, enforced Aug 18
The question is how far can they lower it while still claiming to have still provided the 'always free' - I mean can they reduce my nice free VM to 32k of ram and a 1/1000 of a core and a byte of bandwidth/month?
trebligdivad··on Holocloth
Whoever did it - very nicely done!
trebligdivad··on Investigating three real-world incidents in our cybersecurity evaluations
Haha yes that was a very silly mistake on their part; they should at least have registered the domain they were targeting; that would actually have been a good canary - any real accesses should set off an alarm. While I knew of .example I didn't know .test - hmm that's quite nice!
trebligdivad··on Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport
They are different opportunities for thieves; airport parking has an advantage that the owners are expected to be away for a while, and, if someone is involved in the parking then they know they may be away for lets say 2 weeks. So then the thief thinks if they can steal the car soon after they arrive no one will notice for ~2 weeks by which time it's in a container on the otherside of the world.
trebligdivad··on London Gatwick has launched a robotic airport parking service
The car.
