travisporter··on Tesla presented misleading 'Full Self-Driving' safety data to European regulator
Great! I'm glad it works. I have tried it and have come off impressed. Why can't Tesla accept liability for accidents then and call this level 3? Also, look up the settlements for ASS
travisporter··on I’ve joined Anthropic
Sir, please make it easy to break the twitter/x moat. Why don't we have an app that just posts to all the socials like bluesky/mastodon/threads etc
travisporter··on Tariffs Raised Consumers' Prices, but the Refunds Go Only to Businesses
OP also says "This would be a valid concern if..." so, no need to defend these poor massive businesses who also screwed us with shrinkflation for five years.
travisporter··on Germany Moves Closer to a Social Media Ban for Those Under 16
comment made me think! I'm old so this was true since youtube didn't get big until i was in my 30s, so maybe it is a good thing :)
travisporter··on Ask HN: What happens after the AI bubble bursts?
I can go on Gemini, claude, mistral, (and even chatgpt) for free (even through a VPN), so they are definitely not profitable for me as they are not getting anything from me. are you saying subscriptions are subsidizing me?
travisporter··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
Spitballing here, why not shred these clothes as filler for insulation instead of literally burning them? PFAS and fiber inconsistencies as these clothes are probably a hodgepodge of all sorts of chemicals, so they probably need to be characterized. I think chemical recycling is also being looked into.
travisporter··on Wholesale prices rose 0.9% in July, more than expected
I think looking at the top 5% of wealth, not just taxpayers, may open up the conversation on both sides
travisporter··on Aptera's First Solar Road Trip. 300 Miles, One Charge
Agreed, I'd make the same argument as parent for a Harley. It's not my cup of tea, loud, impractical, and a gas guzzler, but it clearly appeals to a bunch of people. Give things a chance for goodness sake. Aptera never claimed you don't need to charge.
travisporter··on Explainer: What's r1 and everything else?
Oh wow thank you yes I did
travisporter··on Explainer: What's r1 and everything else?
But Anthropic is a French company isn’t that in the EU
travisporter··on Citations on the Anthropic API
I’ve been away from this space for about a year - is Claude still better at coding tasks?
travisporter··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
My issue is more with the CDC. Are there state institutions that can take up the slack locally? Asking for a friend with kids who wants to move to a place with a lower risk of getting measles
travisporter··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
If there is a new pandemic soon we will see it without any question. Hurricanes were redirected on a whim.
travisporter··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
Agree with pausing hiring and causal expenditures. Why block external communication? What does that do
travisporter··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
No they listened about TikTok
travisporter··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring
Truly sad that I believed you were being genuine for a second
travisporter··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
What about Hyundai? They also went big on EVs and now are competing even in China
travisporter··on How I program with LLMs
> I got into this profession simply because I could Ctrl-Z to the previous step much more easily than my then favourite chemical engineering goals.

That is interesting. Asking as a complete ignoramus - is there not a way to do this now? Like start off with a 100 of reagent and at every step use a bit and discard if wrong

travisporter··on My little sister's use of ChatGPT for homework is heartbreaking
Yeah agreed. Really a ton of kids with tablets everytime I go out for dinner
travisporter··on China is the manufacturing superpower
That sense to be possible thesis esp given a comment earlier about china effectively laundering some goods to countries with deficits to china
travisporter··on What Happens When a Whole Generation Never Grows Up?
Really harsh calling it a useless degree (even though I don’t disagree) but expectations should be in order. Hell, even Harvard MBA is 200k+ in the hole, so without a plan afterwards it may not be the best choice.

If he wanted to work in academia I think it’s a very reasonable choice.

travisporter··on What Happens When a Whole Generation Never Grows Up?
But is this per capita? GDP and population are not necessarily linear
travisporter··on Nvidia bets on robotics to drive future growth
That’s not gonna impress me either. There were zoox cars on Lombard st in sf I think. Windy streets are not the challenge. Putting your money where your mouth is - that’s the challenge.
travisporter··on Morgan Stanley Follows Citi, BofA in Quitting Climate Group
Are you describing accelerationism?
travisporter··on $4.3B+ distributed, Nearly Full Recovery, to 40k+ Victims of Madoff Ponzi Scheme
Still, a success story in my eyes
travisporter··on California Flat Earther admits partial defeat after trip to Antarctica
No, you can. There is not another shape that fits.
travisporter··on High housing prices are caused by government's zoning laws
Visiting a friend in nashville and just learned of a weird loophole called a horizontal property regime. She technically only owns the land under her home but the backyard and driveway is shared with her neighbor under a “HOA” with 50% ownership exactly and zero fees.

https://www.steinberglawfirm.com/blog/what-is-a-horizontal-p...

Apparently they are all over town since the 2010s instead of waiting to split a large lot into two.

travisporter··on High housing prices are caused by government's zoning laws
What’s the reason for minimum set back rules? Is it just aesthetics
travisporter··on Three-quarters of the land is drying out, 'redefining life on Earth'
As a close follower of Casey, I have become disillusioned with the lack of progress in this space. Certainly solar is cheaper but his own company is very slow to scale up and ignores the logistical challenges of these huge endeavors. The salton sea lithium project should be a slam dunk but is very slow because building big things takes time.

Also, not everything he says is gospel

travisporter··on Waymo will bring autonomous vehicles to Tokyo
Is anyone working on autonomous busses or vans for public transport?
