trasz3··on Pentagon study reveals higher cancer rates for military pilots, ground crews
Tbh even not protecting American war criminals would go a long way. It’s a bit sad that none of the responsible for My Lai got properly prosecuted.
trasz3··on This Time It's Different
Anything that’s not a glorified copy/paste.
trasz3··on Ask HN: Does GPT-4 signal the start of the singularity?
Why? Humans are useful. Razing entire ecosystems isn’t.
trasz3··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
It's because the incentives to make money quickly end up being stronger than incentives to build a sustainable open source ecosystems.

Next step is to do the same with music.
trasz3··on Ask Dang: What tools do you use for moderating HN?
How is AI more of a black box than a human moderator?
trasz3··on Ask Dang: What tools do you use for moderating HN?
Also note that all this lacks any kind of transparency.
trasz3··on Ask Dang: What tools do you use for moderating HN?
Remember that HN is first of all a marketing tool for YC. It would be silly for them to allow views that are too inconvenient to their (actual and potential) business partners. And those partners are predominantly from USA.
trasz3··on Ask HN: Are FAANG layoffs having an effect on high-profile open source projects?
FAANG-controlled “open source” projects aren’t really Open Source - they release the code licensed under Open Source license, but without most of its fundamental advantages.
trasz3··on Documentary spurs a new look at the case of the first gene-edited babies
The article is FUD of course, but one thing worth noting is how it assumes a dropping pregnancies are because of forced sterilization and not just improving life quality - which is how it works everywhere else.
trasz3··on Why aren’t teenagers driving anymore?

trasz3··on Magic doesn't work that way
>There are practically no religions around anymore that have a god whose purpose is like "this guy brings the tides"

Catholic saints are pretty much exactly this, “lesser gods”, just not called that.

trasz3··on Magic doesn't work that way
>Trivially, you not believing in god is not an absence of delusion or whatever, but necessarily a belief.

At, the old “_not_ collecting postage stamps is a hobby too” argument.

trasz3··on Magic doesn't work that way
Funny you mention human rights, which is something the religion (Catholicism) fought frantically against.

There are different kind of beliefs. The author is quite explicit in that he’s describing one particular kind: religious beliefs. Which, as we now know, are just another kind of fringe theories, like flat earth. But - and that’s what the article is about - they could make sense in some specific circumstances.

>tech workers in India care about what they do

Are you trying to say the Indian tech workers have much more adult attitude to their employment, as opposed to their western friends who are happy to sacrifice themselves ad maiorem corpo gloriam?

trasz3··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
>How to deal with Russia? I actually opt for appeasement and containment.

Ie repeating the steps that led to the current war (and a couple of previous ones). You expect a different outcome next time?

trasz3··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
Many people in US prisons are there for drug related offenses, which were invented precisely to jail the black population. And while you probably can’t be jailed for praying, you definitely can be put there for rough sleeping or many other non-crimes invented for that specific purpose.

But you are right it’s not directly comparable - the usual American way of dealing with the Uighur ethnic group is killing them from safe distance (see Middle East), not incarceration.

trasz3··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
>reform are happening

Same as in China.

>factually that millions

The highest estimates, by Zenz, only go up to a million. And it’s not factual at all.

>eradicate the Uighur language

I suppose that’s why you have official Chinese banknotes with Uighur text on them, and that’s why Uighur kids are being taught their native language in schools.

>well documented cases of forced sterilization

We have the same in USA.

Generally speaking: you’re repeating rhetorics (propaganda) instead of focusing on verifiable information.

trasz3··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
It wasn’t the ideology behind, sure, but the end result was the same.
trasz3··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
>Also comparing anything going on in the US for the last 60 years to the genocide happening in Xinjiang is ridiculous on its face.

Indeed - the fact that black people are being killed and incarcerated for their skin colour in USA is well documented, whereas the “genocide” is mostly just a propaganda tool.

trasz3··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
Yeah, look at all the prosperity the liberal East India Company brought there.

>China has concentration camps.

So does USA. It’s called the prison system. Except USA is imprisoning many more people, per capita.

trasz3··on Reimplementing the Coreutils in a modern language (Rust)
Off support for software written by someone else. That’s the point: it’s much cheaper than selling support for their own software, because they don’t need to pay for development.
trasz3··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
>Where is the victory?

Here: https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-docum.... Russia already lost about half of its entire available land forces.

trasz3··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
We’ve been there - Ukraine was friendly to Russia until 2014, and we know what happened.
trasz3··on Reimplementing the Coreutils in a modern language (Rust)
GPL doesn’t make you any less an unpaid labour. In fact the whole RedHat business model is about profiting off software written by people you don’t pay.
