tracedddd··on Apple Car: For Real This Time?
It’s mostly like taking an Uber, but I think the future will have many more instant-car users, since it is so convenient in major cities.

There are benefits of course, a self driving taxi could show up configured to your exact specifications, would probably be a more standard/reliable experience than Uber, no need to interact with people if you don’t feel like it, and no need to consider them either. Play loud music or sit in silence. Make a private call. Sleep.

Relatively minor benefits in the big picture but it’s mainly that I don’t see Apple hiring a bunch of drivers, so I think a self driving fleet could be the dream. They’re big on UX control, kinda their signature.

Interesting article, but I disagree with the conclusion. Smart car style vehicles never really caught on. They have a poor user experience. Cramped and they don’t feel very safe. Most people can’t ride a motorcycle either. They’re cool, but Apple isn’t about to target a specialty market with a play like this.

I theorize Apple will produce a car, but surprise us by having zero ownership. It’ll be entirely plan based, a service subscription to compete with Uber. They’re just waiting for self driving to be feasible, so there are no drivers required.

hack the planet, man.

(really, just use responsibly, like any tool. You’re overthinking it)

You’re absolutely correct, I hate how new cars look between the crumble zones, plasticky everything, and wind tunnel optimizations smoothing every stylistic choice out.

They do drive well, crash well, and have sweet fuel economy though. So for ICE it’s probably best. I’m happy to see EVs having design flexibility again.

tracedddd··on How hard should I push myself?
It’s amazing how envious one can be of another’s suffering. I really want nothing more than to be driven and stressed about if I should relax more. I’m moderately successful at whatever I do, but I could be so much more if I could find a way to apply myself even 10%. Instead I always take the low commitment, easy money, do the minimum required route. It’s so natural.I’m sure it sounds nice to many people but I despise myself for it.

I love how they look, everything about them from the doors to the instrument panel to the steel body.

I honestly don’t like back to the future much, not more than any other movie, and it’s popularity from that has dissuaded me from buying one (not to mention the soaring prices due to the film.) Nor do I particularly care about the founder or his choices.

For some, the design simply has a great appeal. An EV refresh would be a dream and I would absolutely buy a somewhat overpriced Tesla produced Delorean.

tracedddd··on I tried creating a web browser and Google blocked me (2019)
I’m not claiming the situation is just or should be ignored, but the option the author seems to be ignoring is to launch without Widevine. Sure, a lot won’t work, but a lot will. Having a vocal community can add a lot of pressure.
tracedddd··on Attacking the DeFi ecosystem with flash loans for fun and profit (2020)
Flash loans can totally be (and are) attacked like you describe. In fact much of DeFi can be frontrun. Most commonly it’s large trades to AMMs, where the original buyer ends up getting significantly more slippage than they expected.

The future is likely private smart contracts like Secret (https://scrt.network/)in which the contract’s internal state and the function calls are entirely obscured using sMPC or by leveraging SGX enclaves. This makes it impossible to frontrun in most cases.

Whether an unauditable financial system is a good thing or bad thing is still up for debate.

somehow, I doubt we’ve achieved high enough unity for coordination like that.
tracedddd··on Superintelligence cannot be contained: Lessons from Computability Theory
there are 15 year old hackers finding 0day kernel exploits and vm escapes. A superintelligent AI would have no problem jumping an airgap and spreading to the entire internet. It could promise anyone it interacted with billions for an Ethernet connection and deliver on its promise too. You’d have to pull the plug on _everything_ to shut it down.
tracedddd··on Getting Started with Signal
Keybase showed a lot of promise, but ever since they were bought by Zoom I’ve been hesitant to depend on it. There’s a good chance it’ll be neglected or cannibalized in the future, not to mention the real or imagined CCP influence. Perhaps failure is a self fulfilling prophecy.
tracedddd··on 20% of LAPD officers, civilian employees say they won’t take Covid-19 vaccine
Presumably, the vast majority of the nurses working now have either already contracted and recovered from COVID, and are now likely immune, or gone through months of heavy exposure without consequence. I’m not particularly surprised they aren’t taking it as seriously as we may expect at this point.
