tppiotrowski··on Tell HN: From $200/mo to $18k in 5 years as solo founder
So it's a metric you can game if you go viral on Twitter and get a lot of signups that cancel after one month?
tppiotrowski··on Tell HN: From $200/mo to $18k in 5 years as solo founder
I noticed MRR is the key measure reported by startups. I've seen some startups in really saturated markets have very high MRR and it made me wonder if they're just spending $.99 of every $1 on ads so really they do not make any profit but high revenue. Can you comment on profit vs revenue?
tppiotrowski··on Ask HN: What are we even chasing?
First of all, these are valid feelings so don't just discard them. They are normal. They reflect your values. You want your life to have meaning, you want to have an impact on the world, you want to be happy. These are good things. They get you out of bed each day and motivate you.

Now, just learn to tone your emotional response to these thoughts from 100% to like 20%. Remember that your desire to grind is rooted in positive values, but don't let them run amok and take over your life. Acknowledge them, but realize they are not the be-all end-all.

tppiotrowski··on Issues with Multiple Cloudflare Services
My site is up and running but I saw reduced visitors (via analytics) starting at 9AM PST and am seeing no visitors this past hour 10AM PST.

Edit: Overall I'm really happy with Cloudflare. My biggest win was switching from Render to Cloudflare pages in terms of TTFB as measured by Page Speed Insights (went from 1.1s to .5s on average)

I think parent meant that mobile phone creation should be discouraged. Mobile phone consumption is no issue.
tppiotrowski··on Paper map sales are booming
Ah yes, there are many bargains to be had on Amazon if you just read the reviews in depth. Like you mentioned, a lot of bad reviews because the manual is confusing, etc even though the product is great!
tppiotrowski··on Paper map sales are booming
I agree with the big picture utility. A good project would be a map where you can choose to display all Best Westerns, Shell gas stations, etc at state zoom level so you can visualize a day's worth of travel including food, gas and lodging destinations without needing to repeatedly search GMaps. (i.e. it looks like there's a Shell station in 15, 65 and 128 miles along our route...)

When Lonely Planet guides were popular, there was a trend of investors buying popular hostels/attractions from the guide and running them into the ground before the next Lonely Planet was published and warned of the demise. I haven't seen this as much lately (maybe due to rise of online reviews), but cross-referencing Lonely Planet with TripAdvisor is the sweet-spot.
tppiotrowski··on Gpu.js: GPU Accelerated JavaScript
This library transpiles JS to WebGL which allows computations to run in parallel on the GPU instead of one by one on the main JS thread.

I used this library to prototype shademap but I think it's no longer maintained. I PRed a fix to correct atan2 over a year ago and no movement [1].

Because this library optimized for simplicity over performance, switching to vanilla WebGL will get you better performance (especially with textures) in the long run.

I do highly recommend it if you're a web developer interested in harnessing parallel processing.

tppiotrowski··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
I lost access to my Coinbase account a while back because I was using Authenticator on the iPhone and when I bought a new phone and set it up, my Authenticator codes did not transfer with the rest of my data. At that point I stopped using Authenticator. I hope that's still not an issue upgrading iPhones today.
tppiotrowski··on GeoServer is an open source server for sharing geospatial data
Any good online resources for understanding WMS, WFS, and WCS for someone who's only ever worked with map tiles using the https://domain.com/{z}/{x}/{y}.png request format?
tppiotrowski··on Burn-out, daunting work, overstretched, and it's just too much
Reminds me of a quote in GTD by David Allen:

"An ambient angst pervades our society-there's a sense that somehow there's probably something we should be doing that we're not, which creates a tension for which there is no resolution and from which there is no rest."

It's super hard to cut scope. Knowing that the software you write has imperfections but needing to move on to building the next feature creates angst. Knowing there's a better solution but not having the time to implement it can drive you crazy. You need to learn how to let things go and make peace with it.

tppiotrowski··on WebGL Fluid Simulation
I wonder how the IOS app works. Is it using WebGL in a webview or the shader code on iOS and WebGL are both using OpenGL 3+?
tppiotrowski··on Quitting the rat race
I think insurance policies cap maximum out of pocket costs. I'm on a cheap policy ($300/month) that caps annual out of pocket costs at $12K. I have that $12K on standby if something really bad happens but it's been years and no issues yet.
tppiotrowski··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
It's also a good way of interviewing. As part of your cover letter, explain that you decided to improve the website of your future employer in some way and give a link to the extension.

Someone I interviewed once did something like this and we couldn't think of a reason not to hire them because they effectively showed us they were capable of understanding and modifying our existing code which was basically what we wanted in a candidate.

> contains adult sexual dialog that is inappropriate for student cast members and student audiences.

This article would really benefit from citations from the actual script of Indecent. The article tries to argue that Romeo and Juliet should be banned on the same basis but I don't remember R&J having any raunchy dialog, just some cleverly worded allusions so it seems like Apple and oranges to me. Will try to edit this comment once I find the wording of this "adult sexual dialog".

Edit: cursory scan of what I think is the screenplay for basic cuss words didn't yield anything substantial [1]

tppiotrowski··on Realistic daily range of an electric vehicle
I believe the SoC (state of charge) history is recorded for Teslas and other EVs. There is a company called Recurrent [1] which uses this data to estimate battery degradation. I think the idea is to generate something like a Carfax report for used EV battery packs.

tppiotrowski··on What ChatGPT reveals about the collapse of support for higher education
I think traditional media manipulates by selectively omitting context. Let's say a police officer died of a heart attack during January 6th, it would be presented as "capital police officer dies during the riots". While technically true, different people would interpret this as murder or accident.

Journalists argue that too much context makes for grueling reading but it's too powerful of a tool to wield selectively.

tppiotrowski··on JPMorgan to spend $1B on rental homes in the US to become a megalandlord
Is 4% an average rate of return for landlords? 4% of what: the capital you used to buy the house?

So if I buy a house for $100,000, I get $4000 in rent per year? Or I get $4000 in my pocket after I use the rent money to pay the mortgage and property tax?

tppiotrowski··on Giving Up on Privacy (2011)
I think this is a good approach. Make your Facebook public and assume all your messages will be read by your mom one day. As the author alludes, if your mom wouldn't approve you probably shouldn't say it.

When is comes to privacy: Hope for everything. Expect nothing.

tppiotrowski··on The Architecture of the Lisa Personal Computer (1984) [pdf]
Fascinating. But how does the graphics card know the pixel layout of the display or is there a chip in the display that recomputes where to display a pixel at (3,3) for example?
tppiotrowski··on Tesla to run reduced output in Shanghai in January
Does Tesla also qualify for the new tax incentives taking effect in 2023?
tppiotrowski··on The Architecture of the Lisa Personal Computer (1984) [pdf]
"Therefore, on the Lisa display there are 3 pixels in the horizontal dimension for every 2 pixels in the vertical. These different resolutions do compIicate, slightly, the design of the Lisa graphics soft- ware. For example, the software must remember that a graphical object 150 by 100 appears as a square, however 100 by 100 is a rectangle."

Glad this convention died. Definitely a "clever" hack to save memory bandwidth resulting in a lot of pain for future generations.

tppiotrowski··on Brooklyn Bar Menu Generator (2015)
I never lived in NY but I lived in Sydney and there was a neighborhood by the beach called Bondi which was likely very similar to Brooklyn (yuppies, hipsters) and they had an amazing YouTube channel called Bondi Hipsters that satirized all the fads so perfectly.

tppiotrowski··on Trump’s Major Announcement Is $99 Digital Trading Cards
It's the new "attention economy". Your value is how many eyeballs are fixed on you. It creates spectacles like this.

Edit: another comment pointed out that this is just Trump licensing his name to a product that he likely didn't conjure up himself.
