tppiotrowski··on The First Sherpa to Climb to the Top of Mt. Everest (1954)
Modern day Tenzing's last name is Norgay but in this article it's Norkay. I wonder when the change occurred and why...

Edit: part of the article hints at the answer, "when Tenzing Norkay, or Tenzing Norkay Sherpa, came to Darjeeling in 1933, he was treading a well-worn path. This is the way he has decided to spell his name—he now has business cards—but a European anthropologist who knows Tibetan says that “Tenzin Norgya” would be a better phonetic rendering, and that an accurate transliteration would be “bsTan-aDzin Nor-rGyas,” the capital letters representing the stresses."

tppiotrowski··on DeSantis Signs Bill Shielding Musk’s SpaceX From ‘Spaceflight Entity Liability’
Is it a political favor of the governor if the Florida legislature drafted and passed it?

Vote: Senate 39-0; House 107-5

tppiotrowski··on DeSantis Signs Bill Shielding Musk’s SpaceX From ‘Spaceflight Entity Liability’
"The bill defines the term “crew” to have the same meaning as the federal definition, which defines the term as any employee of a licensee or transferee, or of a contractor or subcontractor of a licensee or transferee, who performs activities in the course of that employment directly relating to the launch, reentry, or other operation of or in a launch vehicle or reentry vehicle that carries human beings. The bill revises the definition of the term"

Am I reading this right that it potentially also includes the ground crew or any employee that contributes to a launch? Does this include the people building a rocket?

tppiotrowski··on Ask HN: I have 176 logins/accounts. How many do you have?
> use in a way you don't expect to gain control of things you do care about

An example would really drive your point home. Can you provide one that people would deem "dangerous"?

Edit: ccooffee just mentioned in the thread that you could be de-anonymized by reusing the same password. Is this what you mean? There's a spectrum of comfort with privacy so maybe that's the source of the disagreement between whether it is important to have unique passwords or not for accounts that don't contain financial/SSN/medical/etc information

tppiotrowski··on Bosses of failed US banks refuse to hand back millions of dollars in pay
The counter argument I hear for rational arguments such as yours is that if you want to hire the best CEOs you basically have to give them all the perks and none of the accountability.

It's a zero sum game where the best people go to where they will get paid out no matter what. I think this should change and I think doing it through regulation where all companies are forced to comply will remove the zero sum factor.

wm? window manager?

It looks like part of a shell window on Linux maybe? Does anyone know a good resource on how to customize your shell like this?

tppiotrowski··on 47% of all internet traffic came from bots in 2022?
Google Read Aloud [1] bot absolutely hammers my website because I update the url using pagehistory and it opens a new request for each url update. It also ignores the meta tag that's meant to disable it :(

tppiotrowski··on Show HN: Boring Report, a news app that uses AI to desensationalize the news
Another great option is legiblenews which provides headlines from Wikipedia edits and is a bit dry but informative. I remember when Trump was president he was mentioned on legiblenews[1] a handful of times during his term while the mainstream media gyrated with his every move. It made me realize how little of the day to day news cycle has meaningful impact on the long term history of the world.

tppiotrowski··on Google Earth 3D Models Now Available as Open Standard (GlTF)
In the Google IO talk they mention its compatible with deck.gl and three.js. Does anyone know of any projects or resources for using either deck or three as a custom renderer [1]?

tppiotrowski··on Google Earth 3D Models Now Available as Open Standard (GlTF)
I haven't looked at the specs yet so maybe you can help me understand if the TerrainExtension, which uses raster DEM data can work with a point cloud data like Googles tiles?

My understanding is that with raster data, you cannot have arches, trees, or any object which has a thin component, like a tree trunk under a thick component like the tree canopy.

The headline or the data?
tppiotrowski··on Total Crap – A magazine written by AI
I think there's two categories of submissions on HN that I read. One is rumination about various tech topics and the other are technical teardowns or step by step how to run Linux on a Kindle, etc

I think the rumination ones can be replaced by AI right now. They don't really serve much practical purpose and are more for entertainment reasons while the technical ones teach you concrete things you are unlikely to reproduce without significant effort.

Personally I'd like to see the latter more celebrated because they entail a lot of work even if they're not as emotionally jarring.

tppiotrowski··on Facebook has not been doing enough to comply with a 2020 privacy order: FTC
I agree but they're Groups, Messenger and Marketplace offerings are best in the industry. It's what myself and most of my friends use it for now.
tppiotrowski··on DIY Adapter: Using an e-bike battery to run a laptop
What is the power loss to heat? I am thinking about using Rad Cycle batteries as a power source for my van (instead of a Jackery, Goalzero, etc) The batteries are 48V, 600Wh and I mostly just want to be able to convert to 5V up to 2.4amps. Is this possible and is this a dumb idea? Any pointers welcome.
tppiotrowski··on The Effects of Noise on Health (2022)
> Researchers have found that the more people are bothered by noise, the greater the health risks they face from it.

This is due to stress. I have wondered for a long time how increased education contributes to cardio vascular risk as we are learning things to avoid and when we encounter them cortisol spikes. This could be red meat or sugar or UV rays or lack of sleep or lack of exercise or in this case too much noise etc.

tppiotrowski··on Google Mars (2005)
I think vegetation is an issue with LiDAR but my understanding is that radar penetrates down to the ground.
tppiotrowski··on Google Mars (2005)
Someone once told me that Mars has better elevation data than Earth. Maybe it's the quality of the orbiters or maybe it's the fact that there is less atmospheric interference and you can use LiDAR vs radar? Can anyone confirm?

bdon, if you're reading this we need a protomaps archive for the moon and Mars :)

tppiotrowski··on Tell HN: Eid Mubarak
Great video. Thank you. A good reminder that religious practices are like human beings. You can try to generalize, but in the end each person's faith is unique in some way.
tppiotrowski··on Tell HN: Eid Mubarak
It seems like there is a geographical bound on practicing (Orthodox?) Muslims. I imagine past 66.5 degrees of latitude, someone fasting would probably die due to the fact that the sun will never rise for a month. Has there been any debate or clarification on how Muslims living in complete darkness are to practice?

Edit: sun will never set/living in 24 hour sunlight. The fasting time is during daylight hours.

tppiotrowski··on Babylon.js 6.0
What is the high level difference between Babylon.js and Three.js?
tppiotrowski··on This website is solar powered and running on a Raspberry Pi-like computer
The extreme power consumption of a RaspberryPI 4 is about 7W [1]. The battery is 144Wh. If battery can discharge 100% that's about 20 hours and about 10 hours for 50% discharge. This all assumes the CPU is pegged at 100% and it's not an older model which consumes less power.

I guess it could be possible.

tppiotrowski··on NPR quits Twitter after being labeled as 'state-affiliated media'
My experience was bad. A lot of servers my friends used didn't take new sign ups so I was forced to pick my own which went offline a few weeks later and I haven't tried using it since because there's no indicator of server quality that I know of and all the servers with a lot of active users are not taking signups. Recommendations from HN would be appreciated.
tppiotrowski··on Sunset at the South Pole
I believe there is an overnight camping experience in Antarctica of you come on one of the tourist cruise ships. I always thought this was funny because the sun never sets so I imagine you're just sitting in a fully lit tent until someone comes to tell you it's morning and time to go back aboard the ship.
tppiotrowski··on Current causes of death in children and adolescents in the United States (2022)

Children aged 1-4 years:

Children aged 10-14 years:
