tpoindex··on Another step towards Elm 1.0
> particularly interesting if the backend could target Go, Rust

A project in development (with heavy Claude assist) might be worth looking at. Elm language, multiple targets (server side/SSE, SPA, desktop, mobile, TUI, CLI), Go FFI, DB integration (SQLite/PG), plus lots of other libs. A Rust language compiler writes a Go runtime code, single executable.

I'm an old-timer and somewhat skeptical of AI generated code but has caught my interest. I've run through the examples, most seem to work as intended.

Are the distance and signal delay numbers supposed to be accurate? NASA's page has them substantially different. Nice work, however!

tpoindex··on Should you wash your solar panels?
My latitude plus east/west arrays are a struggle anyway. On the best (presumably cloudless) December day, I got 13.98 kWh. My 12/1/2025 through 1/31/2026 average per day was 10.32 kWh.
tpoindex··on Should you wash your solar panels?
SolarWorld, 175 watt, polycrystalline. I don't recall any model number (paper work is filed away somewhere.) ISTR mine were made in Germany. I think at the time my system was installed, there where some 225 watt panels available, but the 175 ones were a better price point per watt.

[edit - added technology]

tpoindex··on Should you wash your solar panels?
I have a 19 year-old, roof mounted, 6.3 kW nominal system in two arrays (east/west facing), 40 deg. north. I've never washed the panels outside of rain and occasional hail storm "scrubbing". Replaced a failed inverter two years ago.

My peak summer output is basically the same as when installed, making 36-38 kWh on a cloudless day. I'm actually impressed my panels haven't really degraded in performance over those 19 years.

tpoindex··on Road to Elm 1.0
For a non-fork that has appeared recently, Sky: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47662116

It's vibe-coded (hmmm), Elm syntax, server-side, SSE, compiles to Go, Go FFI, TEA, web/cli/TUI/desktop targets, consistent Db, Ui - a lot of things to like if it all comes together.

tpoindex··on Hear your agent suffer through your code
Marvelous!

Next innovation in this space should be the robotic arm that issues a dope-slap to the developer for writing crappy/buggy/insecure code.

tpoindex··on UK to Allow "Plug in" Solar
Good for the U.K.

Meanwhile in the U.S., public utilities are trying to delay balcony solar:

Perhaps ironically, Utah, a state with a strong republican legislature and governor, has legalized its use with unanimous approval. Vermont too, other state have bills pending.

tpoindex··on NTP at NIST Boulder Has Lost Power
For more background on the Marshal Fire of Dec. 2021: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Fire

tl;dr - the fire destroyed over 1,000 homes, two deaths. The local electrical utility, Xcel, was found as a contributing cause from sparking power lines during a strong wind storm. As a result, electrical utilities now cut power to affected areas during strong winds.

tpoindex··on Airloom – 3D Flight Tracker
Really nice!

Absolutely killer would be integrating with https://www.liveatc.net/ or other live ATC stream. Drop down to choose ground, tower, approach/departure, center, etc.

I'll start in another tab for now.

tpoindex··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
A better question is which (if any) ARM competitors can achieve comparable performance to M-series? I do understand Apple has tuned the entire platform from cpu/gpu, cache, unified memory, and software to achieve what they offer.
tpoindex··on Dev Compass – Programming Philosophy Quiz
I nearly hit a bullseye. Cute, but limiting. I felt I needed other alternatives.

Call this a Myers-Briggs for programming style?

tpoindex··on What to expect from Debian/Trixie
MX Linux for the win. Debian based, but defaults to 'init'. Booting with systemd is an option. Just enough systemd-* running to make things easy and seamless.

  $ ps agxf|grep 'systemd'
      607 ? S 0:00 /lib/systemd/systemd-udevd
     2201 ? S 0:00 /sbin/cgmanager --daemon -m name=systemd
     2726 ? S 0:00 /lib/systemd/systemd-logind

Also can install Nvidia or AMD video drivers.

Seeing the frequency on the sign with the FCC station ID brought back fond memories of the former licensee, KIRL. I listened to 1460 in the late 60's and early 70's when it played top 40 rock and roll. A nice alternative to the top 40 powerhouse at the time, KXOK 630.

++ on ROTT. Just pure fun. I loved the "missile cam", and when you played it on Dec. 25, the music was changed to "Good King Winceslas" in a minor key and characters had Santa hats.
tpoindex··on The Far Side – By Gary Larson
I love the Far Side, glad to have it online. The two volume set has a featured spot on my bookshelf. And fun to see other commenters here share some of my favorites Far Sides.

tpoindex··on Watch Retired ‘Big Boy’ Steam Train Rescue a Stalled Freight Train in Nebraska
Another way to watch and experience steam engines is to go to an "Old Thresher's Reunion/Show". These are often held in rural parts of the U.S., well worth a drive to see these machines in action. Agricultural steam engines were pre-cursors to modern farm tractors, but used as semi-mobile power for other machinery such as threshing machines, saw mills, balers, etc. Wear an N95 and expect to get soot on your clothes.
tpoindex··on A brief interview with Tcl creator John Ousterhout
Thanks to a Saturday afternoon, the awesome Wayback machine, and already got my hike in. See pages 2 and 44: https://docs.oracle.com/pdf/A85251_01.pdf

There's also a 'ps' listing on page 50, with a user id 'aholser', if that rings any bells.

I haven't used Oracle since about 1998, and never Oracle's Enterprise Manager or whatever agent, so no idea how well it worked. I'll read your article.

tpoindex··on A brief interview with Tcl creator John Ousterhout
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply all of OEM was based on Oratcl, just the Tcl extension used to access the database. I was listed in one of the OEM manuals in the copyright statement, along with the RBOC where I worked when I created Oratcl. I don't recall the names of the people at Oracle who contacted me to tell me they were using Oratcl, perhaps 'Mario' or 'Eric' ??

The funny part was when I got an email from someone at Oracle, perhaps in legal, who wanted me to sign an "indemnify and hold harmless" statement for my code, code that I shared freely, received no compensation for, and had no control on how it was used by Oracle in their product -- Rrriiight. I replied "no thanks", and if Oracle wanted to use my software, they simply should comply with the BSD license that it shipped with, including the attribution clause.

tpoindex··on A brief interview with Tcl creator John Ousterhout
Heh, I have a funny story about that too, having written the open source Oratcl extension that was used as a basis for OEM.
tpoindex··on A brief interview with Tcl creator John Ousterhout
Right, the reference Tcl implementation is still in C. This project takes the C code and produces Go, along with a supporting libc emulation in Go. It's still the original C code, not a clone as Jim or Picol.
