towaway1138··on The death of American optimism
TLDR: Our candidate didn't win, so America is doomed, doomed, doomed.
towaway1138··on [dead]
Flagged: This isn't anything like the original headline, nor does the article mention any war, and that factoid is probably only true if you don't count Vietnamese civilians as people.

towaway1138··on Study blames YouTube for rise in number of Flat Earthers
I suspect that almost all of these "believers" are simply trolling the normies, or enjoying their little pub clubs.

On the other hand, I don't completely rule out Dark City...

towaway1138··on Ask HN: Employee at a failing startup
Not sure my experiences were typical, but stuck with it as long as I cared, then moved on. At a minimum, keep your resume hot, keep networking, and assume that all equity will be worthless. If your cash salary is sufficient, and you're having fun or learning, maybe stick around. If nothing else, watching a company crash and burn is educational.
towaway1138··on “Gender Parity in All Areas Just Seems Logical”
She seems to mean (or at least favor) equality of opportunity, as opposed to equality of outcome. The translation seems a little shaky, so not sure.
towaway1138··on [dead]
They seem to be knocking down a strawman. Almost no one talks about cutting out all carbohydrates. Rather, it's the refined, processed stuff that is being eliminated.
towaway1138··on From Python to Go to Rust
Go is not a substitute for Python, nor is Rust a substitute for either.
towaway1138··on An inside look at Google’s data-driven job interview process
Speaking as someone who passed the phone-screen, the all-day interview, and the hiring committee, only to be nixed by some exec, I call bullshit. Their hiring process is pretty much like everyone else's--filled with randomness.

(I realized later that getting turned down was a stroke of great luck, self-serving as that might sound.)

towaway1138··on The Rest of Us Always Knew Churchill Was a Villain
As a single individual, it's probably more effective to work on local ethical issues than to try to do something about global villainy. There are a few people in very special places and times who have the ability to make a global effect (Wikileaks comes to mind), but that's quite rare.

Yes, we can denounce villainy that occurs on the global stage. But in truth that's almost entirely virtue signaling. We look good, but there's no difference effected in the world.

Do something that makes a difference. Despising Churchill is useless, even if he deserved it (which is dubious).

towaway1138··on The Rest of Us Always Knew Churchill Was a Villain
Meh. It's sad, but the structure of the universe is probably such that one cannot become a leader of millions without being a villain.
towaway1138··on Interview with a Suicider
Joking about suicide is iffy. Joking about suicide without being even slightly funny is awful.
towaway1138··on Pressure mounts on Facebook and Google to stop anti-vax conspiracy theories
Is this even beneficial? I was exposed to the "conspiracy theory" known as phrenology as a teenager. Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing to have a teacher point out that the whole thing was bullshit. But it also pretty much inoculated for a lifetime against this sort of thing.
towaway1138··on Everywhere and Nowhere: A Journey Through Suicide
If this is a problem for you, as it is for me, you might find the depression and suicide groups on reddit to be some solace.

Beyond that, I think of suicide as more of something to put off than something to "cure". What can you do to put it off for a bit longer? Sometimes distraction, sometimes drinking, sometimes just getting out into nature somehow.

There's a lot to be said for detaching completely from poisonous people and environments. You might think that you can't leave your awful job, declare bankruptcy, or never talk to your mother again, but you can. And maybe you should.

One thing to consider is the subjective acceleration of time. We all experience that each year seems to pass quicker than the one before, for the most part. I realized at some point that this makes suicide a lot less urgent, at least at my age (50s). Putting it glibly, we'll all be dead soon enough--what's the hurry?

towaway1138··on Ask HN: What languages teach the wisdom of C without the uglyness of it?
Arguably Algol was better, in the sense of being higher-level and with fewer sharp edges. But it looks like C probably exposes a lot more of what's actually going on with memory, pointers, the stack, the heap, etc. That's not always good, but you'll learn a lot that you can't really get with a language like Java or Python.
towaway1138··on High-Speed Rail’s Central Valley Segment Is Not Stranded
Always thought streetsblog was a bit daft, but they've outdone themselves here.
towaway1138··on Ask HN: What languages teach the wisdom of C without the uglyness of it?
Noting that that link was closed as "not constructive".

Not sure what about (say) ANSI C is particularly ugly. The business about pointers to arrays versus pointers to array elements is a bit annoying (and a mistake in retrospect). But that's about it. The rest makes perfect sense.

towaway1138··on Trump to sign border bill, declare emergency: McConnell
Not five years ago I uttered that very thought. But more recent events, in Europe for example, utterly demolish the sentiment.

The rate of immigration must be carefully controlled if disaster is to be avoided. You can bake a cake at 350, but nothing good will come of baking it at 3500 (much less 35,000).

towaway1138··on The Coming Collapse
"The Trump administration did not rise, prima facie, like Venus on a half shell from the sea. Donald Trump is the result of a long process of political, cultural and social decay."

groan

At least learn what "prima facie" means before using it in your opening sentence.

towaway1138··on Trump to sign border bill, declare emergency: McConnell
Given the numbers involved, the _cost_ of the wall seems like a very minor issue.

I'm far more open to arguments about who is harmed by the alternatives and to what degree.

towaway1138··on Trump to sign border bill, declare emergency: McConnell
It's a valid position I guess. But having illegal status opens you up to all kinds of exploitation, violence, etc. It'd be hard to argue that this is a good alternative.
towaway1138··on [dead]
Seriously? How much does being a "phone boy" pay?
towaway1138··on Esports has a diversity problem but these pro gamers are inspiring real change:
Aren't these competitions _literally_ open to everyone?
towaway1138··on Amazon's Home Surveillance Chief Declared War on “Dirtbag Criminals”
Not sure I get the part about filming "public spaces". Wasn't this always legal? Isn't that part of what "public" means?
towaway1138··on Trump to sign border bill, declare emergency: McConnell
What's the best alternative way to minimize the number of people in the country illegally?

It's fine enough to say this option sucks, but you have to bring a better one.

towaway1138··on “Damned if you do, damned if you dont”? I won’t
Essay seems to imply that the author is famous and give no further details, but I've never heard of her.
towaway1138··on Humans Are Still Mating with Neandertals
Were Neandertals actually considered to be less intelligent? Hadn't heard that before.
towaway1138··on Ask HN: Standardized Colorblind Safe Colors for Error, Warning, OK Conditions?
Deut here: For stop lights, thankfully the red is a lot different than the green. Often not that different than yellow, but it turns out that that doesn't matter so much.

The greens are all over the place, and often hard to distinguish from street lights. But again, not so important.

Bless you for thinking about this. :-)

towaway1138··on Google Workers Lost a Leader, but the Fight Will Continue
Ha. Well, I'd be annoyed.
towaway1138··on It’s Time to Leave San Francisco
> You long for 2012. That was when you moved here. That was when shit was real.

Actually, I don't think the serious public defecation started until last year or so.

towaway1138··on Google Workers Lost a Leader, but the Fight Will Continue
In case you missed it, Fong wrote that headline herself. SMH
