Closing a switch is akin to finishing a work, or giving the final hammer blow on the nail, not starting a fire

If I remember correctly there are 3 things you can't do to save a life: illicit relations, take a life and idolatry. Meaning even that if you do find yourself in a situation where cheating on your wife would actually save a life then it will still be forbidden

> is called a destructive totalitarian sect

no it is not, it is called that only by those who does not follow (and which these same rules does not make a difference in their lives) and for some reason feel entitled to be offended for others

I like rules

Not true, no one is forced, Israel is not a dictatorship

I once heard that because of this one should make an hydraulic elevator, so the passenger weight would not affect the energy used, not sure if this holds true or if it is even practical

I believe a NFC tag would be muktse, so you shouldn't even be carrying it at all, eruv or no eruv.

(muktse are things you can't move/carry/handle on shabat)

Anyway I think activating something with it would be the same as activating a motion sensor, which is prohibited.

don't make stuff up, that does not even make sense. of course one can and should desecrate shabat to save a life

well, since time is money, then

time + money == more money

money + money == more money

2 x money == more money

tovmeod··on In Religious Arbitration, Scripture Is the Rule of Law
I don't know from where you have experience with Bet Din's, but in my experience and knowledge it actually favors the women.

Maybe I'm biased because I know a couple of divorced religious jews, but as I see the only example of favoritism to the husband is on get refusal, if the husband refuses to give the divorce the wife can't remarry, all the court can do is put pressure, in Israel they have more powers, they may imprison the husband until he agrees to the divorce.

What people don't tell is that the wife may refuse to accept the divorce, maybe is not that common or maybe people don't talk about it much, but in practice the husband can't remarry the same way until the wife agrees to accept the divorce. The difference is that the court don't apply pressure the same way they do to men.

Also there's the ketuba, on divorce the husband must pay an amount for "breach of contract", and this goes only one way, meaning there's no way the wife will ever need to pay any money, she has only money to receive.

Also children custody goes to the mother, while this is not a problem exclusive of Bet Din's, the court doesn't have powers to assure the father right's of seeing the children, meaning the ex-wife can create problems and difficulties and the court can't do much in practical terms

tovmeod··on A first step toward more global email
This is very useful for non native english speakers that uses other than latin characters. I have to repeat word by word and check what people wrote when I need to tell my email address.

If my address was a word in hebrew, or something people can pronounce and write it would actually help, saving time and avoiding misspellings.

But this should be an alias, or it should be very easy to create one, I already have my email for some years, I don't want to create a new one and handle two accounts unnecessarily.

Also lets say someone creates his email address in his native language, so it is easier to give his address to his friends at school, later in life he wants to give his address to a VC from US he met. even if he gives a business card with his email printed in clear letters, this western person can't even spell or even type, unless he could copy/paste the address he won't be able to send him an email.

tovmeod··on You can no longer just leave Syracuse airport [video]
This reminds of of a story I heard from a speaker about over-engineering:

A toothpaste company had a small rate of faults when producing the product, every couple of thousand tubes produces the machine would put an empty one on the production line, it would then be packaged and shipped, so every now and then a customer would complain he bought an empty toothpaste.

The company decided to fix that, hired a couple of consultants, and after a dozen of engineers looked into the problem for a couple of months and burned a couple of millions in research they came up with a brilliant solution.

before packaging the toothpaste, they added a very sensitive balance to the production line, every toothpaste would pass there, if the balance detected a difference in the expected wight it would pause the line, then a mechanical arm would push it out, go back to the resting place and continue the line.

After implementing the solution the managers waited a couple of months to see the results and compare numbers, to see how efficient the new solution was. It was amazing! 100%. not one complaint of empty tubes after the expensive solution was implemented. The board was so satisfied with the investment that they came to the production floor for a tour on the new QA perfect tool. But it was turned off. They called the floor manager and asked what happened, they couldn't turn off that important piece of the production line, they could have all the complaints back. The floor manager said he doesn't even remember how to turn it on, he said, I turned it off shortly after the put this thing here.

So how it is possible they have 0 complaints with if not because of the new tool? The floor manager said it was slowing down production, every now and then it would completely stop the whole production line, so he turned it off and bought a fan, pointed out to the stop, the fan would be string enough to push any empty toothpaste case.
