totablebanjo··on ADHD drug treatment and risk of negative events and outcomes
The hoops I have to jump through for a prescription I’ve been on for multiple years is ridiculous. My insurance will wrongly think I’ve filled it at a CVS I sent the script to hoping they’d have it in stock and then I sometimes end up paying out of pocket because otherwise I am exhausted all day and have limited capacity to do tasks.

The meds themselves have dramatically improved my life by being more capable of getting tasks and work done. Main downside is the drop off around 8/9pm when I become really tired and unfocused.

totablebanjo··on Palantir Drops 10% on Report of Pentagon Slashing Budget
It’s 8% cut per year over 5 years which is quite a bit.
totablebanjo··on Neil Postman: A civilized man in a century of barbarism (2003)
“Television, he always said, is inhuman to children because it gives them answers to questions they never asked. It did this for purposes of control.” From the article - Wow

If you don’t give them the answer they might have a moment where they discover something on their own.

“There are children playing in the street who could solve some of my top problems in physics, because they have modes of sensory perception that I lost long ago.” J. Robert Oppenheimer (I read this quote today in the book, the medium is the massage, by McLuhan.)

totablebanjo··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
Postwar by Tony Judt. Published in 2005, it covers 1945 Postwar Europe to ~2005. Good coverage of not just the major Western European countries like the UK, Germany, and France, but attention is paid to the Eastern European countries and Soviet Union. The US of course comes into the picture at parts, but the book is firmly focused on Europe. I found the economic development, political attitudes and party shifts, and the coverage of the Soviet Union and countries behind the iron curtain.

I am looking for a follow up and may read Secondhand Time by Svetlana Alexievich, Stalin by Kotkin, or The Free World by Mendand. Suggestions appreciated

totablebanjo··on Ask HN: Do you know methods for improving predictability of time series data?
Forecasting, Principles and Practice by Rob J Hyndman and George Athanasopoulos is a great resource as a starting point: https://otexts.com/fpp3/
totablebanjo··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
A counterpoint to your last statement is that if Zillow really knew residential real estate they wouldn’t have had such large losses this quarter.

It really calls into question their pricing algorithm, but I give them credit for actually trying to get into buying and selling properties.

totablebanjo··on Algorithms by Jeff Erickson
Thank you for pointing out the starting course of the sequence!
totablebanjo··on Quitting a New Job
Ah, that’s a fair point and I can definitely see that working out.

Do you really think you’ll be treated the same by management if you pull that?
totablebanjo··on Crossing 2000 Miles of Siberia to Reach One of the Most Isolated Cities on Earth
I recommend a novel called Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips that is set on Kamchatka and a good amount in Petropavlovsk. It is very much not a wilderness survival book, but more of a mystery and social commentary book.

totablebanjo··on How H-E-B planned for the pandemic
Putting aside the awful human toll... I’m looking forward to reading and hearing from demand planners/time series forecasters about how they responded. Both in terms of updating models as well and how they communicated within their companies. One idea to alleviate the future forecasting challenges raise from this would be to add an explanatory variable/flag this time period. Another challenge will be if there are aftershocks and waves of social distancing required which could lead to more panic buying.
totablebanjo··on The Death of Social Reciprocity in the Era of Digital Distraction
I would disagree that all US cities are like that. In the midwest, people will talk to strangers on the train or street in Chicago. Even in the coastal cities there have been instances where I’ve spoken w people around me if something funny or odd is happening.
totablebanjo··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
Labor’s been screwed the last 50 years. What kind of six figures are we talking, mid?
totablebanjo··on U.S. Oil Production Is 23 Years Ahead of Schedule
I think the above poster, itissid, was referring to the US domestic oil export ban which was lifted at the end of 2015.
totablebanjo··on Amazon HQ2: Advanced talks about second headquarters in Northern Virginia
What are you talking about that no one lives near a metro line?

It’ll be on the same line as Shaw which is one of the most desirable neighborhoods for 20/30 somethings in DC right now.

totablebanjo··on Amazon HQ2: Advanced talks about second headquarters in Northern Virginia
I mean, Crystal City is pretty soulless, but a bunch of AMZN cash will make that millenial ready in no time.

Also, some nyt writer that’d never been there called it the Brooklyn of DC which was hilarious.

totablebanjo··on Amazon HQ2: Advanced talks about second headquarters in Northern Virginia
The metro is trying to improve the safety of the system after some fatal accidents a few years ago. The work force is unmotivated and maintainence reports are falsified. The wait times for the weekend suck and the system shuts down pretty early leading to fans at sports stadiums chanting, “metro sucks.”

Even with all that it’s one of the better transit systems in the US. Not as good as Chicago or NY, but for the size of city it’s good.
