tossaway1··on 8 Straight Hurricanes Have Formed in the Atlantic, a First Since the Late 1800s
> for the latter half of that period...

First half...?

tossaway1··on Jacquard by Google transforms clothing
> Right now, Jacquard only allows one-way communication (human -> device)

Wasn't there mention of light and haptic feedback?

tossaway1··on The true cost of an Uber ride is higher than it seems
Wouldn't that just be the same as any loss leader, which are not illegal in general...
tossaway1··on SpaceX’s worldwide satellite broadband network may have a name: Starlink
Don't name your music company Apple though...
tossaway1··on Yelp Claims Google Broke Promise Made to Regulators
Doesn't Yelp have a reputation for much shadier business practices (i.e. extortion)? Maybe they're not a very sympathetic underdog in this fight.
tossaway1··on Yelp Claims Google Broke Promise Made to Regulators
Why would a scraper who doesn't respect robots.txt be accessing that file?
tossaway1··on ‘Instantly rechargeable’ battery could change the future of electric automobiles
I've owned half a dozen houses including new construction and never had a 240 outlet in the garage.
tossaway1··on Dissecting Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo Compensation
Maybe so, I'm not an expert on such matters, but the highest tax rate was 50% or higher from 1932-1986. I would say that is relevant to our current discussion.
tossaway1··on Dissecting Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo Compensation
> income tax that caps out at 90%

Kind of like it was in the 50s back when America was "great again"?

tossaway1··on Storing Drinking-Water in Copper Pots Kills Contaminating Bacteria (2012)
I would have thought that was a well known fact. It's brought up virtually every time lead toxicity comes up...
tossaway1··on The Multiverse as Muse
The link you provided says

> "When the plural form stigmata is used, it usually refers to the nail wounds on Christ's hands and feet, wounds which have sometimes reappeared on the hands or feet of later worshippers such as St. Francis."

tossaway1··on Bilingual speakers experience time differently, study finds
> Why is the new generation not using exact time like 6:45 5:30 etc?

New generation? My grandparents said things like "half past" and "quarter till" and they were born 100+ years ago.

tossaway1··on Aspirin May Prevent Cancer from Spreading, New Research Shows
Cancer has been associated with colorectal cancer death??
tossaway1··on Burger King ‘O.K. Google’ Ad Doesn’t Seem O.K. With Google
Uh, or it just doesn't work perfectly in all situations or for all people. That's true of most products.
tossaway1··on Breaks Observed in Rover Wheel Treads
I was interested to see his profile if he worked at NASA in this capacity. He had one submission -- it's not like I pored over his history. I don't think I overreacted -- I was impressed that someone could get to a point that they're authoring NASA press releases so quickly.

Like I said, though, I'm a dummy...

tossaway1··on Breaks Observed in Rover Wheel Treads
Are you implying you're the author of this press release? It looks like you were job hunting 6 months ago (based on your one HN submission) -- now you're writing press releases for NASA??

Edit: Nevermind, I'm a dummy.

tossaway1··on Breaks Observed in Rover Wheel Treads
That's a description that most Americans can more easily picture than something like 0.68 mm (including people who are comfortable with metric units like myself) and they seem to be focusing a lot in recent years on making the information they provide more accessible to average Americans, undoubtedly to help drive interest in and support for what they're doing.
tossaway1··on Show HN: Every Day Is Pi Day
> 'I' use? I think you'll find everyone uses a different format than the US.

The plural of "you" in English is"you"...

tossaway1··on A chess position to defeat computers?
There's a computer chess rendition of the position halfway down the article that's a lot easier to parse than the drawing...
tossaway1··on Which Cognitive Bias Is Making NFL Coaches Predictable?
> they show that if the second and 10 is due to a run on first down, they are more likely to run on second down than if they passed on first down

I think you got this backwards. If the first down was a run, they were far less likely to run on second down compared to when the first down was a pass.

tossaway1··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel – A tediously accurate map of the solar system
Interesting that you state Isaac Newton's attitude as fact. When I Google "isaac newton universe built for humans to understand" unquoted, I don't find any support for this statement. In fact, this thread ends up as one of the top hits.
tossaway1··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2017)
You posted this twice...
tossaway1··on Let's compile like it's 1992 (2014)
> The compiler is part of the IDE, not some external process that needs to start from a blank state for each file, needing to read the same files over and over...

I suspect the difference is negligible in practice. In both cases, the files are likely to be cached in memory after they're read the first time, so you're not really reading it over and over.

tossaway1··on I Wrote My Fastest Hashtable
I feel like you misread his comment if you're asking that. His next sentence explains why it's mistaken...
tossaway1··on Would Calexit be a good thing?
> And no shared border.

TIL MA and NY do not share a border...

tossaway1··on LSD 'microdosing' is trending in Silicon Valley
Healthy discourse can include both qualitative and quantitative commentary. I think HN readers can generally differentiate between the two. We don't need comment police complaining that some qualitative comments are lacking statistical support.
tossaway1··on LSD 'microdosing' is trending in Silicon Valley
I think it's clear that lcw was making an observation about the tone of HN comments on the topic. I found it to be a reasonable one that matches my perception.

Disputing his comment makes sense if you think he's wrong, but it seems unreasonable to require people to back up such commentary with "stats".

tossaway1··on Pakistan airline admits taking extra passengers in aisle
What flight are you referring to? The article says extra passengers were allowed to stand in the aisles. It also says the captain was unaware until after takeoff.
tossaway1··on White House Indicates Potential Crackdown on Recreational Marijuana
There's plenty of evidence that alcohol leads many to aggressive and violent behavior and a fair amount of evidence that pot has the opposite effect. I think that's reason enough to belief that a drunk gun user is apt to be more dangerous than a high (on weed) one.
tossaway1··on Do we really need swap on modern systems?
The quote I included made it sound like he was referring to stories that advocate getting rid of swap.
