topherjaynes··on Guido Van Rossum: 21 Years of Py, From Pet Project to Prog Lang of the Year
Did some digging couldn't find out if this was taped as well. Any one have a link?
topherjaynes··on [dead]
How did you get that from the FAQs about the paywall?
topherjaynes··on The Day Facebook Lost Half Its Value
Anyone got a link to the TED talk the post mentions?

topherjaynes··on Be careful of who you work with
Hey Chad, seems like a good post. . . not being one of those crazy typography guys, but it was very hard to read this post. I'm in Chrome, xp, and on a 21 inch monitor. The letters look like they are weighted differently in thickness. Maybe move to a more standard font? Anyways, just an fyi.
topherjaynes··on Faster than a speeding rabbit: speed, sync, and settings
Really enjoy the page like UI instead of a popout window. If you're in Chrome: chrome://settings/browser
topherjaynes··on Mindfulness, Stress Reduction & Healing; Jon Kabat-Zinn, 2007, Google Tech Talk
Clicked, and the video says "Video is currently not available." Anyone else having this problem?

Anyways, here is the YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSU8ftmmhmw

topherjaynes··on Changes to my life as a result of just four weeks of daily meditation
I meditated for the throughout grad school to keep my sanity, but slowly transitioned into running with no music and no talking if I am running in a group as my form of meditation. Basically I combined my mediation time with my running time. It wasn't a conscious change, but I found that actively not thinking during long (13 mile+)runs gave me the mental benefits of meditating (focus, relaxation, spurred creativity) but also gave me the benefits of being an active runner.

You might say how can you focus on not thinking during a rain, well like anything it takes practice--it won't happen over night.

topherjaynes··on Verizon iPhone selling mostly to existing iPhone owners?
I was an existing Verizon customer, and finally convinced (today) the store to sell me an iPhone at cost. I had a Razor, from 2006, but my 'free upgrade' went to my brother a few months ago when he lost his, though I still had a free upgrade from two years ago I didn't use...apparently those don't accrue every two years.

Anyways, as an existing Verizon customer they made it really hard for me to get an iPhone--mainly without spending $749.00. I feel that many customers are in that weird stage where they can't get the iPhone at the 199/299 price and if they hadn't left Verizon for AT&T they more than likely weren't dying to have an iPhone for the price of a new iPad.

(sent from my iPhone)

topherjaynes··on Search Optimization and Its Dirty Little Secrets
I'm curious how The NYTimes got tipped off to this story before Matt Cutts and the Spam Team. Since this had been going on for month, I wonder how long The NYtimes had been investigating it. The article says, "Last week, The Times sent Google the evidence it had collected about the links to JCPenney.com."
topherjaynes··on A Classic 'Nontextbook' on Writing
I'd recommend Stephen King's "On Writing", Ray Bradbury "Zen and the Art of Writing", and "Ernest Hemingway on Writing". All have great insights into the joy and struggles of writing. I really appreciate how their musings focus on the struggles of writing well since everyone tries to romanticize writers. It's hard no matter what.
topherjaynes··on Send to Kindle: any web page text, with one click, using Chrome browser.
Not only does it take several keys, but the placement of the keyboard is just awkward (I have a DX). If I have to take any meaningfully note I have to place the DX on the table/lap/somesurface and I chicken peck my note out.

Not to convenient, but I still love my Kindle for pure reading.

topherjaynes··on Can one man develop a Linkedin competitor in 30 days?
If you really are you might be too busy coding, but be sure to check grammar, especially in titles--it's "a Linkedin competitor."
topherjaynes··on Open letter to BC Law School's dean to leave and get a refund
This was pretty heavily reported (editorialized, in the Business sections non the less) in this past Sunday NYTimes, enough that I blogged it. . .

topherjaynes··on Southwest Airlines pilot holds plane for murder victim’s family
Yes it most certainly does. How many articles have been on the front page about Zappos's insanely over the top customer service. No it doesn't having anything to do with coding, but it has everything to do with starting a company.

If don't think that customer service stories belong here you don't really get all aspects of starting a company.

Everyone here should aspire to have their employees go above and beyond like this

"As my husband walked down the Jetway with the pilot, he said, “I can’t thank you enough for this.”

The pilot responded with, “They can’t go anywhere without me and I wasn’t going anywhere without you. Now relax. We’ll get you there. And again, I’m so sorry.”

topherjaynes··on How Pixar Bosses Saved Their Employees from Layoffs
The Story outline for cars might seem "terrible," but think about every Pixar movie's outline before you actually saw it? A movie about Toys? A Movie entirely about Rats--whose going to watch that? A Robot who doesn't talk, for how long?

And yet, each and everyone of those movies were astounding, at least in my opinion, but critics and box office receipts prove my point too.

Yes, sequels have a tendency to be purely money ploys, but luckily Pixar's sequels almost exceed the originals (Toy Story 2 and 3). I'd give the future films a chance before you even see a trailer for them.

topherjaynes··on How Disney Uses Technology To Control Crowds In Their Theme Parks
Man I love Disney world but is this crowd control or manipulation?

“Control is Disney’s middle name, so they have always been on the cutting edge of this kind of thing"

topherjaynes··on Tell HN: Writing helps
I use write room because it really helps me focus on the page/words. Though it would be nice if you could lock it so it can't be minimized for a certain amount of time. Still best writing environment.

topherjaynes··on Tell HN: Writing helps
Read any writer's "On writing" book and they all talk about a mandatory amount of words they have to write on a daily basis. I just finished Jack London's and he had to write a 1,000 (polished)words a day. He struggled with it, but strangely, his creativity came from his routine.

I'd recommend Stephen King's "On Writing", Ray Bradbury "Zen and the Art of Writing", and "Ernest Hemingway on Writing". All have great insights into the joy and struggles of writing, but each on makes you want to be a great writer.

Best of luck keeping it up!

Essays, like good literature, become more relevant and certain times. A major event could happen (Groupon turning down Google) and a PG essay could shed some light on the situation, even if it was written years ago.

Likewise, new situations can cast a different light on what was once written. HNers posting relevant and timely links to old essays is a good thing.

topherjaynes··on Show HN: Profile Collage for Facebook
Constructive comments include details, besides vague adjectives.

Your only two comments on HN are about beautyprofile. Are you involved with it? Not a good way to get PR then.

Because it was the right thing to do, in their eyes and many others, and they have every right to do it. Rebecca MacKinnon enunciates this well here: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/12/02/mackinnon.wikileak...
topherjaynes··on Startup Ideas Every Nerd Has (That Never Work)
I dunno, I agree that everyone and their brother has these ideas, but it's like writing a novel. In literature there are a bunch archetypes (hero, heroine, Christ-like figure, etc), it's the nuance the author brings to the new iteration . Your right in that everyone has these ideas, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't think about ways to do them in a different way!
topherjaynes··on Jimmy Wales- Chrome Extension
Any reason why or are you just stating the obvious?
topherjaynes··on Jimmy Wales- Chrome Extension
I'd be interested to see the conversion rate from this extension. I wonder if there are any other extensions out there that sneakily do this? Maybe replace advertising on pages with different ads: think replace a coke ad with a pepsi ad.

Edit: I'm pretty sure this is spam since this isn't directly from Wikipedia--the dev company's site is in Japanese-- but it's still raising some interesting ideas in online advertising or spam.

topherjaynes··on Facebook Tries To Silence Lamebook: Removes Its Page, Blocks Links And Likes
This is very unsettling. BUT, I was able to share the TC article about lamebook on my wall. As long as there is still someway to voice dissent, even if it is through a thirdparty site.
topherjaynes··on Whoa, Google, That's A Pretty Big Security Hole
It's not like it was a Google site (gmail, gCal, or whatever) they took down. Google took down his personal blog, which seems really sketchy. Fixing the problem involves more than just taking down the site they says there is a problem.
topherjaynes··on Budget Puzzle: You Fix the US Budget
I actually broke out a pencil and did this puzzle in the paper /BUT/ I can't find which page has the answer? Is it in the same section? Haven't checked by the crossword puzzle, yet
topherjaynes··on Did you know: In NYC, yellow cabs are required to take you anywhere in NYC.
Or further down:

Please don't submit comments complaining that a submission is inappropriate for the site. If you think something is spam or offtopic, flag it by going to its page and clicking on the "flag" link. (Not all users will see this; there is a karma threshold.) If you flag something, please don't also comment that you did.

topherjaynes··on Did you know: In NYC, yellow cabs are required to take you anywhere in NYC.
This is on topic and you wouldn't have objected if he put "start-up transportation advice for newbies to NYC"in the heading or the first line.

This is a good tip for anyone who is working or having meetings in NYC. Getting around the city trying to meet clients or partners can be tricky and if you're in a hurry you don't have time to argue if the cab driver can get you there or not.
