top256··on Update: Approaching IPv4 Run-out
With email deliverability the key factor is now domain name reputation and less ip.
top256··on Denial of H1-B visas to India’s largest IT services exporters at all-time high
This has been fixed. French people won't get any new green cards.

top256··on The red flags and magic numbers that investors look for in startup's metrics
I really like this article! Thanks for posting it
top256··on Giftedness and Genius: Crucial Differences (1996) [pdf]
I think the essay considers genius as something way too simpler. I'll give you just one example : there is a relationship between environment and development and this is clearly not examined nor cited. A genius might emerge but she needs support from her environment.
top256··on Not raising funds to stay small and happy
It depends what you want and what is your market size. Due to liquidation preference, it makes sense for investors to invest in any good companies they can no matter their size.

Now that SaaS is maturing and opportunities are smaller microSaaS will become more commonplace.

I built one 10 years ago and I remember people thought I was crazy at that time...

top256··on Y Combinator announces growth program for later-stage startups
Afaik YC if anything is that they're not very not risk averse and that's because they accept tons of companies
top256··on Singapore's electric car-sharing program hits the road
We had it in Paris and it is not a success. Cars are too slow and small for real highway use, they are expensive and especially dirty. Hopefully they will improvement on all these points
top256··on Superior IQs associated with mental and physical disorders, research suggests
Duplicate of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15886128
top256··on Justin Kan’s Atrium is starting a boot camp to help founders raise money
isn't it the point of YCombinator? Does that mean he is launching a competitor to YC?
top256··on Stanford Compilers Course
They have a new edition covering new subjects. Also they're explaining the big principles behind compilers. That's why the book is still relevant (I'm working at a compiler startup)
top256··on I hate telephones
I can do it from my Android. I have a block list/block all unknown. It's super easy to access
top256··on Snapchat Has a Child-Porn Problem
Even though this story is horrible, it reminds me of a silicon valley episode

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/1/15504692/hbo-silicon-valle...

Are they prescient or does things never change?

top256··on The last days of Doppler Lab, inventor of connected earpods
imho just that you need to build something other companies cannot copy easily.

I worked on that http://pilo.cool and stopped for precisely that reason

top256··on The last days of Doppler Lab, inventor of connected earpods
Google is releasing such a product too
top256··on Bitcoin mining heats homes for free in Siberia [video]
There is this company too: https://computing.qarnot.com/

It's built on the same idea but a more mature and more general solution to the same problem.

top256··on Ask HN: How did you significantly reduce your AWS cost?
It depends on your budget. They start caring about >10K$/month I think.

Also if you're a startup, you can get usually 100K$ of free credit

top256··on 'We can't compete': why universities are losing their best AI scientists
it's comparing apple to oranges. At the risk of stating the obvious, academia is not a good way to get rich imho. That is hardly new :)
top256··on Ask HN: How did you significantly reduce your AWS cost?
I think the first option is to go to AWS and tell them that. They can discount prices + have staff to help you reduce your bills. I'd start here actually
top256··on Working at Amazon
I think it started with AWS success
top256··on Cryptocurrency Evolution
yes my bad: https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/19961/is-bitcoin...
top256··on Working at Amazon
it's interesting how Amazon is now positioning themselves as a tier 1 employer.

They used to be a tier2.

AFAIK they also have a brutal pager culture where you're awoken in the middle of the night.

top256··on Cryptocurrency Evolution
You can do actually things with gold. More than you'd expect (for instance http://geology.com/minerals/gold/uses-of-gold.shtml )

BTC is quite different as it is only a "value store" and is inflationary (the supply of BTC is fixed and won't increase)

top256··on Google, Facebook, and Amazon have fundamentally transformed the web
if I knew I'd be working on precisely that :)
top256··on Google, Facebook, and Amazon have fundamentally transformed the web
People used to say the same thing about Wintel until the Web appeared.

Not to say his points are wrong just that it lacks some historical perspective.

IMHO, these companies are on the verge of becoming irrelevant actually.

top256··on Ask HN: What phone should I buy?
I just got that a huawei p8 lite 2017. I paid it <200$ and it's pretty good. It feels like an iPhone rip off and you need to uninstall a few apps/change some settings in param. Overall I'm surprised that it's that good.
top256··on The Trouble with High IQ
Of course there is a bias in this study with people in Mensa. There is also an added bias: people tested for IQ (in Europe) are tested because of behaviour issues usually.

the interesting question is imho what do you think (from your experience).

Are you/your friends with high IQ psychological issues? I've read previously that high IQ protects from such trouble

top256··on “For Rent” signs are popping up all over Portland
Why is that surprising? This is eco 101 no?
top256··on Ask HN: Would you recommend someone to learn Emacs now?
That makes sense. Thanks for your perspective.
top256··on Are there teams considering using ZeroMQ for new projects in 2017/2018?
Why not https://nats.io/ ? It is imho simpler and livelier (as in people are still working/using it)

What's your use case?

top256··on Ask HN: Would you recommend someone to learn Emacs now?
If you do lots of console works (e.g. script shell, Linux system stuff), learn emacs or vim.

On the other hand if you're a front end Web dev or an Android dev there is probably not much point except from a curiosity point of view
