tonypace··on A deep dive into iOS Exploit chains found in the wild
Line is the default messaging app in Taiwan, so one would assume that the Chinese government would be interested in targeting it.
tonypace··on Chinese Education Startup Puts Western Teachers on Notice
It's too common for it to be a meaningful data point. Taiwan was the biggest destination for Chinese tours around 2015.

I have heard that having a degree from a Taiwanese university is somewhat suspicious.

tonypace··on Chinese Education Startup Puts Western Teachers on Notice
2.7 million Chinese tourists visited Taiwan in 2017, mostly as individuals.
tonypace··on The MBA Myth and the Cult of the CEO
But this was the justification in countless think pieces in the Economist, the NYT, and so on. Align the incentives of the CEO with the shareholders and magic will occur. The author is dueling with a ghost that you never saw.
tonypace··on Amp – A complete text editor for the terminal
What an unfortunate name. All search results are for the Minecraft editor.

It's also fairly obtuse for non-experts. A champion non-modal editor would have a learning curve as shallow as nano but more depth that could reveal itself over time.

tonypace··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
There is a deep resonance to the way this game encourages lying to protect an alliance that is already being betrayed. This inspires paranoia along those who have successfully been defeated.
tonypace··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
This needs unpacking, because it's true but not very complete. Diplomacy is correlated to human behavior that causes people to reevaluate relationships. This pattern is not caused by losing players being unable to take a game as a game. It's having a game reveal real-life patterns of manipulation and deception that ends relationships.

That said, I do recommend a game with your friends.

tonypace··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
It's unusual for someone to win outright in my experience. But the presence of an outright victory condition affects player behavior.
tonypace··on My experience with Sarah Jeong, Jason Koebler, and Vice Magazine
Koebler was not the original story author, but he was the editor who contacted Naomi to 'give her the opportunity to' respond to the messageboard accusations.
tonypace··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
Facebook and mobile gaming companies are both taking their playbook from gambling companies. Casino addiction doesn't root your teeth, but it certainly does convince a lot of people to steal from their mother. It's a very unethical business model.
tonypace··on E-Cigarette Maker Juul Labs Is Raising $1.2B
There are a lot of studies about inhaling PG in the context of smoke machines (in bars, generally). It reduces lung function, but not permanently. No more serious harm seems to be indicated.
tonypace··on Magazine publishers with video ambitions see YouTube as safer bet than Facebook
A brand publisher is in a much better position to roll with that than an indie content maker. Having worn both hats, it's strange how much your perspective changes.
tonypace··on The Stuxnet worm may be the most sophisticated software ever written
Forbes doesn't have a Russian bias. It has a business model bias. In short, it milks its good name while paying a low per click rate.

This combination is very, very attractive to propaganda operations. People who see themselves as writers cannot make an actual living there, but writing for a publication their parents recognize feeds their ego.

This can work either overtly or more subtly. They can simply reward useful perspectives with clicks, or they can offer additional steady money work through other channels. Either way they have an entirely deniable useful idiot.

Forbes is particularly full of this.

tonypace··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
The visibility is part of the problem. In itself it's distracting. The problem is when it's seen to work, thus encouraging others to imitate.
tonypace··on Myanmar group questions Zuckerberg’s claim on Facebook hate speech prevention
According to reports, invitations to lynchings of Rohingya are shared on Messenger. If you say freedom of speech, I say Facebook and all of it's evil is banned.

I think I have the better case.

tonypace··on Myanmar group questions Zuckerberg’s claim on Facebook hate speech prevention
FB people, if this isn't your canary, than what is?
tonypace··on Uber Is Ripping Off Frequent Riders and Here’s How to Avoid It
Because the freedom to switch is often a luxury. At the minimum, it requires foresight, which many lack. At the maximum, it requires buying the same thing twice.
tonypace··on Uber Is Ripping Off Frequent Riders and Here’s How to Avoid It
Competition implies profit seeking. When you're selling stories about future profit to fools, idiocy ensues.
tonypace··on Surgeons urge people to throw out bristle BBQ brushes (2016)
But people use them to remove firey fat while grilling. I've done that. Obviously, bad idea.
tonypace··on UN blames Facebook for spreading hatred of Rohingya
Because Facebook already controls what people say and see on their platform. But they choose to use that power to censor boobs and show you whatever will provide the strongest response.
tonypace··on The problem with the Code of Conduct
With restaurants, you pay afterwards. With conferences, there is a lot of up front money. The situations are different.
tonypace··on Machine Learning Crash Course
There are a tremendous number of people outside of programming who spend much or all of their work time collecting, cleaning up, and understanding data. Think teachers, accountants, traders - essentially everyone who spends a lot of time in spreadsheets.
tonypace··on Facebook Has Got an Instagram Problem
I'm a teacher in Asia. My students complain mightily about the sudden deluge of ads. They experience it as being much worse than Facebook.
tonypace··on Memo: Foxconn cost to Wisconsin nearing $4.5B
Foxconn / Hon Hai had an extensive record of doing exactly this in Taiwan. I would be surprised if they haven't done the same in China.
tonypace··on Adderall Risks: Much More Than You Wanted to Know
The Ritalin prescription train is alive and well in industrial Asia. You seem to be basing an argument on false priors.
tonypace··on Why Education Startups Do Not Succeed (2011)
The point is not solely related to investment banking. Education as social signaling will not be disrupted by the blockchain.
tonypace··on Why Education Startups Do Not Succeed (2011)
English Central attempts the conversation bot but it is fairly terrible. Competition would be welcome.
tonypace··on Google promoted Texas gunman fake tweets
People who can reliably be convinced to buy advertisers' goods when presented with fake information in response to a search. 'Cure cancer with one easy pill' and that sort of thing.
tonypace··on U.S. top court tightens patent suit rules in blow to ‘patent trolls’
Federal judges are part of the local legal community, just like the law firms that survive by creating Delaware corporations. Social cues and environment affect all of us more than we imagine.
tonypace··on CRISPR eliminates HIV-1 infection in live animals
You mean the tax dodge that only started doing research when the government started investigating?
