tonypace··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
I think if the last decade has taught us anything, its that decorum has zero to negative value in public communication. People pay attention to drama, and you need attention to be heard. When the penalty for rudeness is gone, just go for contention.
tonypace··on HowStuffWorks founder Marshall Brain sent final email before sudden death
Imagine it came with dozens of downvotes on every social platform. Certainly all current events channels on YouTube avoid it religiously. I assume they have reason.
tonypace··on Reverse engineers bust sleazy gig work platform
I don't think the right is terribly unified on this. A populist with a strong angle might be able to make enough of a movement to push some version of this through. I have trouble imagining this populist figure, but it might resemble a "cross of AI".
tonypace··on The History and Evolution of Playing Cards
This article triggered Gell Mann Amnesia very quickly when it suggested playing cards may have evolved from Mah Jongg tiles. Mah Jongg was invented in the mid 1800s and spread during the Taiping Rebellion. Chinese society has Middle Ages origin gambling cards, but Mah Jongg tiles are very far removed from them.
tonypace··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
That is definitely a potential issue, but so far any text models that run on laptops are tremendously slow. Still, something to look out for.

No homework that counts is essentially a double win.
tonypace··on Turning the Crank: Design as a Mechanical Process
He uses a custom system called Digital Project. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Project

All pre-secondary schools are designed to control the movements of students. It is one of their fundamental benefits to society.

And yet, I have an unfortunately clear mental picture of the human that did this. In itself, that is a very specific coding style. I don't imagine an LLM would do that. Chat would instead take a couple of the methods from the Symbian codebase and use them where they didn't exist. The God classes would merely be mined for more non-existent functions. The true if block would become a function. And the # lines would have comments on them. Useless comments, but there would be text following every last one of them. Totally different styles.

It definitely flattens your style.
tonypace··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
It looked like black magic at first. But then you started to see the signs.
tonypace··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
They should have to tell you that. I can see why it's convenient for them not to, but I believe the larger point is far more important.
tonypace··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
It's fairly simple in most situations. If it doesn't involve a computer, it's handwritten in class. If it does involve a computer, it's a temporarily offline computer. We have figured out solutions to these problems already.

The lazy essay assignment is 100% real. However, the driving force there is not the teacher, but parental complaints causing ass-covering administrative mandates. "Why wasn't there any homework on topic X before the exam?" "We apologize so much for that, Mrs Keen. First, we will change Precious's grade, but from now on..."
tonypace··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
The problem is that people would really dislike that. It's even satirized in Snow Crash in an extremely unflattering portrayal of the kind of person who would routinely do this.
tonypace··on Social Web Foundation launches, supported by Vivaldi
This stuff was probably human-written, but that actually makes it worse. At least the AI has an excuse.
tonypace··on Jerry Neumann: Resignation Letter
What you need is a feedback system between your coarse measurements from a low precision system such as a ruler or goggles and the prints that you make. Does the tab you printed fit into the latch? What part fails to fit?
tonypace··on The Triple Failure of 2U, EdX, and Axim
The difference smells like culture from across the ocean.
tonypace··on AI-Driven Drone Surveillance Is Leading to Home Insurance Cancellations
Damages due to lack of maintenance are not covered and you don't see the local application?
tonypace··on AI-Driven Drone Surveillance Is Leading to Home Insurance Cancellations
For now, in most domains, insurance is optional. If it smells worthless, they have a problem.
tonypace··on Moments in Chromecast's history
The audio was acceptable over a bad line. For the competition, it too often wasn't.
tonypace··on Half of Workers Around the World Are Struggling with Burnout
That's it, a very clear formulation. As a teacher, that describes my experience precisely. I am willing to bet it describes all other high-burnout professions.

That board? What board?
tonypace··on Frog Galvanoscope
I wish there were numbers attached. I'm curious how sensitive it is.
tonypace··on Attention Is Off By One
This sounds like a good use case for local llm models. Browser plugin, precooked prompts for different levels of detail, maybe a lora to give the model some idea of expected output. I bet some of the 13b models could do a useful job on this even if they were imperfect.
tonypace··on Private and Public Mastodon
It's not that rare, but releasing a ton of this kind of screenshot makes you look very untrustworthy.
tonypace··on Meta is inviting researchers to pick apart the flaws in its version of GPT-3
But here it is in our field of view. This model has very limited look ahead. I don't think we can rely on that in the future.

In the shadow end, typically. You can easily stand up and breathe.

Rich people often try to purchase political influence and respect for their opinions. Historically, this has had very mixed results, but you can't deny that it has sometimes worked. The problem is that this does not have a market mechanism. If the rich person has funds from another source, economics can go out the window, and usually does.
