tonyedgecombe··on Photopea creator weighs in on Photosuite project
>most oss is written with the expectation of no financial reward.

Most open source software is written by corporations which have a complimentary motive. Think hardware manufacturers writing drivers because it makes their products more saleable or Google writing Go because they needed a systems programming language.

tonyedgecombe··on Apple and a hacker's future
It’s taken a huge effort on behalf of the gun manufacturers to shift public opinion on firearms. Attitudes are quite different in most other developed nations.

>I tried to report in in the past, but I was completely ignored by Github / Microsoft.

This is the second time we have heard this complaint in the last week. Previously it was https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49832406

It feels like we need to be more and more vigilant about relying on tools from these big technology companies. Especially if you are running a small business. They really don't give a shit about you unless you have enough pull to get on the front page of HN.

I think you know what I meant. The people living in Adobe apps.

Who is going to write that software if there is no reward.
tonyedgecombe··on The Era of Software Quality, or the Era of Ostriches?
> AI writing quality improves a lot with multiple passes.

Or you end up with an AI version of Chinese whispers.

Whether it gets finished or not will say more about the developer than AI.
tonyedgecombe··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
I never hear these complaints from creative professionals, only developers.
tonyedgecombe··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
Open source is strong in developer tools and where it is complimentary to some other product.

Creative apps don’t fit in either of those categories.

Adobe’s problem isn’t that we replace their tools with AI created tools. It’s that we replace the use of their tools with the use of AI.
tonyedgecombe··on Colorectal Cancer Is Rising Among the Young, Even Kids and Teens
People will go to extraordinary lengths to argue against this.
tonyedgecombe··on Apple Pass Designer
I expect half of them work for the competition.
tonyedgecombe··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Actually I think profits win over safety.
tonyedgecombe··on ChatGPT Pro 500
What a strange idea to name your product after it's price.
tonyedgecombe··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
More likely because Spain has the highest percentage of apartment dwellers in Europe.
tonyedgecombe··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It does feel like young people are more likely to go to a coffee shop than a pub if they want to socialise.
tonyedgecombe··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
The main reason is the performance. Many early EV's had blistering acceleration and this was reflected it the number of claims insurance companies were getting.
tonyedgecombe··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
It’s orchestrated. A few sock puppets and a ton of useful idiots.
tonyedgecombe··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
We already have that. The government is going to get its slice of your money one way or another.
tonyedgecombe··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
The country never has a say. We didn't vote for Liz Truss for example.

I do wish he had called an election though (I suspect he may still do that).

tonyedgecombe··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
>but people actually hate this stuff.

I suspect a lot of younger people would welcome it. Especially in areas where there is a real shortage of family homes.

tonyedgecombe··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
>Imagine long-time residents getting kicked out not because a developer wants to make buck, but because the tax system requires that to happen.

Some of us think that would be a good thing. My elderly neighbour has been living on her own in a five bedroom house for twenty five years meanwhile there are people nearby struggling to raise a family in one or two bedroom houses. She doesn't need that house, she is just there out of inertia. Letting the tax system nudge people in the right direction is a good thing.

In the early days of Delphi you could recognise those apps because the OK and Cancel buttons had a tick or cross in them.
tonyedgecombe··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
tonyedgecombe··on There is no epidemic of loneliness, but there is an epidemic of scurvy
>I know it's not feasible to survey everyone all the time

I think we are getting pretty close to that.
