tomtoise··on A Linux botnet is launching crippling DDoS attacks in excess of 150Gbps
Speaking from experience (Of getting hit, not running one of these services!) - Gaming is a particularly juicy target, you can set up a basic front-end that allows people to 'hit' certain IP addresses offline for x amount of time in exchange for money. Its use is quite common in certain games like League of Legends, CS:GO etc.

Shooting you an email to the email listed on your profile. I really should fix my keybase.

That's pretty cool. So would it pull the data from the web or the seedbox? Sorry - I'm fairly newbish with p2p technology.

Appreciate it. That seems like a useful site - bookmarked :)

I've spent some time turning this dataset into a Torrent - magnet link is here. If the Reddit OP doesn't want it to be shared in this way for whatever reason, I will of course kill it. Just trying to save him some bandwidth.

Sure, here you go [1] - It unpacks to over 1tb though, hence me considering spinning up another server just for the comments. Might be a good use for my test Hadoop cluster.

Link seems to have been hugged to death. Can anyone mirror/plaintext? Cheers.

This ties directly into the comment dataset, made by the same person and via the same method[1]. Working on pulling down the submission data now, will have to spin up another server if I want to do the comment/submission correlation.

>>"This dataset will go nicely with the full Reddit Comment Corpus that I released a couple months ago. The link_id from each comment corresponds to the id key in each of the submission objects in this dataset."

tomtoise··on The Internet of Pointless Things
It's one more ridiculous example of the 'Internet of Shit'.

If it's not secure, I could imagine people fiddling with the weights just to scare the crap out of parents. It's something my younger self would do.

I'm writing a quick frontend to search the AM leak database. And sticking some ads on it. /s
tomtoise··on DeepSound: Steganography tool to hide secret data into audio files
I remember using something slightly similar (Though more rudimentary) in my final year Computer Forensics degree. The task was to leave a 'breadcrumb trail' of evidence for another group leading to files that would condemn us as child sex traffickers. Our group hid the password to a certain archive file in a single track of a Cannibal Corpse album. I think the track was 'Festering in the Crypt'. When the track was viewed as a wave graph, the password was clearly visible. Much fun was had leaving subtle hints to our counter group that they had to listen to the whole album backwards to glean the password. I don't think they ever solved it. Cannibal Corpse was selected because any distortion from changing the wavelengths to hide the password would be very hard to pick up.

I got two job offers through linkedin - anecdotal I know but it was pretty good. Job offers from companies, I mean, not just mindless recruitment agency spam.

tomtoise··on Coloring books are suddenly catching on with adults
Sorry, only just noticed my comment actually got replies. She's not really too into digital surfaces, she prefers using pen(cil) and paper wherever she can. So for my specific use-case it probably wouldn't be to fruitful, but there may be other people who feel differently. I'd say go for it and see what comes of it!
tomtoise··on Coloring books are suddenly catching on with adults
Girlfriend has pretty deep mental health issues, she got one of these for Christmas and it works really well as a coping technique. Takes her mind off of whatever she's obsessing about and instead she gets lost in colouring. Highly recommended as a distraction to an overthinking brain.
tomtoise··on Ask HN: Dealing with thick english accents, what do you do?
I'm 'lucky' enough to be completely deaf in one ear. Once I've explained this to the person I'm talking to, they tend to make much more effort to enunciate and speak clearly.

Fake being half deaf? Only half-joking.

tomtoise··on Photos hacked? No worries if you're using this new app
So all the photos on iCloud are masked as well? If not, nothing to really stop an attacker breaching that like the fappening.
tomtoise··on The Unkillable Demon King
Different strokes for different folks. I have never been interested in physical sports (Unless my partner's dad is around, then yay, rugby, best sport in the world), or e-sports that much, but my friend had a spare ticket to watch the LCS Cup finals (League of Legends tournament) in Wembley Arena, London and I've never experienced anything like it. You get so caught up in the hype, the baying crowd and the insane technical skills of the players that you can't ever look at e-sports in the same way again.

Been given a ticket to watch New Zeland All-Blacks play this year, maybe the same thing will happen and I'll enjoy rugby more, who knows.

tomtoise··on Mass snooping fake mobile towers 'uncovered in UK'
The threshold is generally accepted as 10% over, so 77mph on a motorway. However, I only know that from hearsay, so take it with a pinch of salt.

tomtoise··on Mass snooping fake mobile towers 'uncovered in UK'
While this is true, I think there are arguments for and against your statement. While some areas of the UK are unquestionably far more monitored than their US counterparts, geographical size definitely comes into play. It's easier to monitor the UK because it is a tiny fraction of the size of the US and, therefore, will cost a fraction of the price. Our police also aren't quite as heavily militarized as the US (Thanks to US Military selling surplus to PDs for steep discounts and weird gun laws), we just have two huge water cannons on standby, I predict them being authorized in the next year or two though. Maybe it's just misplaced nationalism and my consumption of fairly left-leaning media that leaves me with the impression that the US is #1 for that stuff, I dunno. I think we're pretty evenly pegged on the totalitarian state front.
tomtoise··on Mass snooping fake mobile towers 'uncovered in UK'
The Mets stance on this to me seals any doubt about their involvement in deploying these boxes. I've been watching developments in the surveillance state in the UK with some concern, this just puts the final nail in the coffin.

You can't defend such dragnet surveillance techniques as 'terrorist prevention'. How can I make a difference?

I don't want my country to become America 2.0 (It's already starting to look like that with water cannons on standby, internet filtering and now this).

tomtoise··on Mapping Scotland's Dramatic Shift in Political Geography
This is quite an interesting stance. While I'm glad as an Englishman who appreciates the EU that UKIP didn't come to more power, I think it's unfair to say there was no UKIP vote, they came second or third in a lot of Labour areas and actually netted around 12% of all votes, which is huge, beating the Lib Dems outright.

It's only our messed up FPTP system that means we're safe from UKIP, which doesn't resonate well with me. When a party can net 12% of the overall vote, coming third overall and only get a single seat in Parliment, something is seriously wrong with our voting system.

tomtoise··on The Hezbollah Connection
Very, very long read. I've just finished it and I guess it shows how phone metadata can be used constructively to forensically implicate criminals in this way.

One thing, what does the article mean when it says

"Hezbollah has already stopped using public cell networks in favor of closed ones"? Any ideas?

tomtoise··on Riots are destructive, but can lead to social reforms
London boy here. I can completely empathize. My views on Rioting have been completely tainted by the looting and destruction that went on in 2011 over the shooting of Mike Duggan (Which I personally believe was 'justified' - the thug had a gun on him and was suspected to be on his way to commit a crime, but that's getting off point).

I saw the destruction caused, had 'friends' on social media (no longer, obviously) who were bragging about what they had looted. There was absolutely no aim or order to these riots, a lot of independent shops were trashed and looted, people lost livelihoods and for what.

I am acutely aware of my inherent distaste for rioting, I understand that was just one riot and they are not all the same, but it has given me a subconsciously dismissive attitude to riots as a criminal element abusing unrest to get away with robbery and assault.
