tommccabe··on Want a Ticket to eCommerce Hackathon? First You’ll Have to Solve a Puzzle
I am really excited to see events like this in NYC. The tech community around e-commerce is not as strong as it could be- events like this are great for building the community. There is a lot of growth and opportunity in this field, but I think it is being overlooked by a lot of developers.

It also looks like they took down the website and app for Wakemate, which seems to have come as a surprise for the dozens of people that were still using the product.

tommccabe··on Chartbeat raises $9.5 million to measure the real time web
Real time analytics are an amazing tool in e-commerce.

Incremental merchandising gains can lead the huge wins in e-commerce. Real time analytics are one way to see what people are buying and what's hot right now.

Let's put this example out there.. you have a product on your site that is now featured on a hot fashion blog. Customers are coming to your shop and clamoring to purchase it. Problem is, it is already running low on stock and once sold out, you'll miss the benefit of the blog exposure. Real time analytics allow the merchants to make quick, informed buying decisions so that the product remains in stock.

I'm very interested to see what Chartbeat does for e-commerce analytics.

tommccabe··on Ask HN: 60 days of employment before health insurance?
I've had to wait 60-90 days for insurance at every single job I've had. This seems to be the norm in NY/NJ, at least.
tommccabe··on Facebook is losing E-Commerce
This is the problem with Facebook commerce so far - most retailers are simply offering their entire catalog up for sale via FB without any curation or exclusivity. Consumers don't want to browse through thousands of products via FB; but there still exists the opportunity for success through curated content. Brands need to create reason for consumers to shop via Facebook and most brands aren't doing that (yet).
tommccabe··on Retailers Shut Facebook Storefonts Amid Apathy
Yes, it's true that some brands have failed on Facebook- but to write off the entire concept is overreaching. The problem, to date, hasn't been with technology but with merchandising. Brands need to figure out the correct mix of merchandising and marketing before they will be successful. Too many retailers have just been vomiting up their entire catalog and that's what what the consumer wants on Facebook.

Facebook will always remain a secondary or tertiary revenue stream for brands, but there is money to be made in that space.

Just signed up for an account. Only thing that surprised me was that my password was sent via e-mail in cleartext- I didn't expect that.
tommccabe··on Is it ethically OK to take an advert out on a competitors website?
If you had Google Ads on your own website, do you think that your competitor would hesitate to buy keywords and try to take your business away? Probably not. It's fair game.
