tomklein··on Today I Feel Low
> people who deliberately use MongoDB as a relational database sucks

I’ve seen this in a lot of projects I worked for too. Along with the use of “trendy” tech like blockchains being used for stuff it shouldn’t be used for.

Country Code TLDs have their own rules/are independent.
tomklein··on The Google Pixel 6 won’t ship with a charger
Why not just include a coupon for a free charger or let the customer decide?
tomklein··on Non-Exhaustive List of Amazon Trademarks
They got the british phone number prefix +44 as a trademark?
tomklein··on Ask HN: What we as community can do to adopt IPv6 faster?
I wrote a custom DNS nameserver and a resolver for an upcoming project. I implemented it IPv6 first. I think as more we support and use IPv6, as more it’ll be adopted.
tomklein··on Can you switch a Deleware C-corp to an LLC? Is it hard to do?
Only one I’ve heard of is Google Inc. switching to Google LLC after Alphabet was founded.
tomklein··on Cloudflare's inaccessible browser contradicts the company's mission
Out of curiosity: Do screenreaders use OCR nowadays and if so, is it working good or rather bad due to the lost HTML markup?
tomklein··on The shortest, regex breaking website-domain possible: http://pn/
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
tomklein··on The shortest, regex breaking website-domain possible: http://pn/
I just found this after looking through a couple of interesting posts. I have no idea if this is permitted or why it was set up unfortunately.
tomklein··on Project Starline: Feel like you're there, together
Wouldn’t that be way faster than the speed of light?
tomklein··on A List of Hacker News's Undocumented Features and Behaviors (2018-20)
You can do code blocks by putting two spaces in front of text:

This is an example of a code block, if that’s what you meant.
tomklein··on Yamauchi No.10 Family Office
This is the level of creativity I needed this morning.
tomklein··on Why do so many companies incorporate in Delaware?
I guess the author means $175 up to $180,000 instead of $175k as minimum
tomklein··on RFC8962: Establishing the Protocol Police
Seems to be a premium domain name which is at 215k € for just this one single registration.
tomklein··on French news sites prevail in negotiations with Google over "neighboring rights”
It’s a win-win already. Google is listing those sites giving them the opportunity to be seen by lots of people and news sites sell subscriptions or put ads on their sites to make money. I don’t really get why Google should pay news sites for promoting them and helping them make money. Personally, I always clicked to read more if I wanted to know more about a certain topic.
tomklein··on Ask HN: Why do developers implement smooth scrolling while it is annoying?
My guess is that those web developers like it, want their visitors to have the same experience as them and/or implemented it maybe as a challenge or because they can.

Edit: Some sites do it as part of the user experience, which might be useful, but most of the time it might be annoying due to bad implementations.

tomklein··on Ask HN: Giving away my (barely) profitable SaaS app, any takers?
Would love to work with your product. Got a SaaS Startup (prerelease) that‘ll provide web products to founders, startups, and SMBs at an affordable price. We got a solid NodeJS-based modular codebase and a highly available infrastructure. I think this would fit us well.

tomklein··on Ask HN: Has anyone migrated off containerized infrastructure?
Actually, containerization helped us a lot. Our automated CI/CD does linting, testing (we only test critical stuff atm), compilation and deployment in less than 5 minutes. We also double-check changes by requiring approval to merge into develop and a second approval if develop is merged into the main branch.

If we need to deploy a hot fix, it is pushed to master directly with admin access or if there is something truly critically (which should never happen), we just block connections on our load balancers and/or clusters.

Containers are imho one of the best things out there for deployment, as you can deploy changes to a cluster of servers without needing to reconfigure them and without the codes/containers interfering each other.

tomklein··on Cloudflare outage on July 17, 2020
That was beautifully written.
tomklein··on Cloudflare outage on July 17, 2020
Addition: CF just sent an email out to customers about the incident.
tomklein··on Cloudflare outage on July 17, 2020
I love your transparent communication and how quickly you guys respond with an explanation of what actually went wrong and how to mitigate these issues in the future. Such things happen.
tomklein··on Cloudflare was down
Back online for me.

NPM is down too.
tomklein··on Ask HN: Siteuptime.com but running my JavaScript every 5 mins?
We're currently building one. If you'd like, you can send us some ideas to be implemented at support at gentlent dot com :)
tomklein··on Forget Google, time to end the Visa-MasterCard duopoly
In Germany lots of places just don’t accept any cards besides Visa and MasterCard just because of the seller fees.
tomklein··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
I guess a lot of times it’s for security or to minimize storage over time. Sometimes you are only logged in for the browser session, so if you close it, it removes your session. Most smaller sites do have the remember me button to opt in for longer sessions and do not implement a session renew feature.
tomklein··on Chromium and Mozilla to enforce 1 year validity for TLS certificates
Why exactly 398 days? Seems a little bit odd as it’s approx 13 months plus additional 2-3 days.
tomklein··on Puns for Devs

tomklein··on An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT
Never heard about the democracy index. Pretty interesting. I share this thought of a democracy 2.0 where people are educated more on a rational basis before decisions are made.

This seems to me like overprotective parents trying to limit what the kids should do based mostly on feelings, which is not a bad thing per se, but should be backed by some form of rationality.

I guess a lot things can be challenged

tomklein··on An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT
That’s an interesting point of view I didn’t think about yet. But as long as there is no collective will, should there be a law on that at all?
