tomiplaz··on Maybe you should learn something
Beautiful quote I strongly relate to. When I was 16, I had a sudden realisation one day that no one knows what anything of this actually is. That was a profoundly defining moment of who I am and the deepest and most beautiful thought my limited mind managed to grasp. It made me become in awe of the universe, inspired me to learn and has been a pillar I could lean on during difficult times. I cherish that thought every day.

tomiplaz··on Ask HN: Hourly billers, do you bill for only focused work?
When I was being payed by hour, I billed only effective work hours.

I was pushing myself to do 6 effective work hours a day, which was not always easy (some days I would work throughout the whole day just to accomplish those 6 effective hours).

I was tracking procrastination / break / meal time initially in 5-min and later in 15-min intervals. That was kind of extreme and my friends did not understand why I was being so honest or felt guilty otherwise. In hindsight, they were right.

I suggest you bill by day, or by month if you can. Rather than lowering your rate, consider taking a slightly more relaxed, less stressful approach and don't feel bad about it as long as you deliver. If it'll make you feel better and you think there's no risk involved, consider discussing this openly with your client(s).

tomiplaz··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Cosmos by Carl Sagan is my favorite.

Planet Earth and Blue Planet are amazing.

Jodorowsky's Dune is great.

tomiplaz··on Five major Canadian banks mysteriously go offline in hours-long outage
There have been only two Bitcoin downtime events, last one in 2013. Its uptime is 99.987%.
tomiplaz··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
Please try to expand your lists. Also, please try to create the same kind of expanded lists for other such related tech you're comparing Bitcoin with.
tomiplaz··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
I don't think you understand what Bitcoin has brought to the table. Consider its fundamentals and its network effect. Other blockchain tech, most prominently permissioned blockchains, should be reprobated, since they don't require blockchain tech and could be better implemented using tech that relies on standard database systems.
tomiplaz··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
No. I got all of my contracting jobs via HN (except the first one, which was a natural transition) and am very grateful for that. All of my clients were / are great, professionally and personally.
tomiplaz··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
I've always been very honest when logging my hours, that is when I was paid by hour, and back then I was doing 6 hours of effective work per day.

A few months ago I started being payed by month, and now I do around 5 hours of effective work per day. The more relaxed work day due to less effective hours done was something I was looking forward to; I don't drag this mental burden with me the whole day anymore and it feels great.

My friends always say I work more than I should, but doing less always seemed like cheating and stealing to me.

Employees and colleagues value my output, which is encouraging, but hearing my friends' arguments and reading this post and comments makes me feel like I'm missing out.

tomiplaz··on The most underused browser feature: reader mode
My favourite and often used browser feature (Firefox).
tomiplaz··on A Visualization of Galactic Settlement
There's a great video on this topic from the Cool Worlds Lab channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7OeeGcMFMc

Taking into account ship ranges and settlement lifetimes produces very different results (15:36 in the video).

I've done a similar thing few years ago. You can check it out at the bottom of the website at http://138.68.65.145/ (website is old and needs updating, same with the domain). I decided to print the output to the alert popup. I have `clear` and `exit` implemented, and going up/down the command history.

> The complicated web is here because users insist on interaction

Do they, though? Or is it the product managers who insist on such things? I'd put more weight on them. Some of it might be backed by user data, but generally it feels like they're pushing things unjustifiably or for wrong reasons.

tomiplaz··on The Neurologist Who Hacked His Brain – And Almost Lost His Mind

tomiplaz··on Ask HN: How do you deal with professional envy?
When it comes to that, I accept that I am a different person, a person with different past, values and traits. I also like to think (mostly to make myself feel a bit better) that such a person might not be experiencing many other (valuable) things in life that I am or other people are. If that is not true and that high level peer is having a great life outside of work as well, then I simply admire them. If anything, that just shows me how good one can be; it propels me to push harder at least a little bit more.

It all depends on one's state of mind. I've had times when it was difficult for me to face such a fact, and times when I looked at it in a quite positive way.

tomiplaz··on SpaceX Crew Dragon Splashes Down After Historic Test Flight
At the post-launch press conference [1], Musk was asked a question whether they intend to use the capsule for tourism if there were interested individuals. His answer was affirmative, but not for the very near future. Also, it seemed as if they don't intend to go down that path for the general public, but rather have that capability ready for interested people willin to pay a premium.

Thanks for sharing these. The comment very much resonates with me. There are some other resonating comments in these threads. It feels good to read those; I feel less alone.

Those nicely articulated thoughts might honestly help me deal with my episodes.

I should take a look at the book too.
