tomhow··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
> Ooh, look at you and your amazingly nimble faculties for discerning one horrific catastrophe from another.

> What will you do for your next feat? Lecture us on the fine differences between lynchings and honor killings?

The guidelines include:

Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. Edit out swipes.

Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive.

When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."

Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. It tramples curiosity.

You've been politely asked to observe the guidelines several times over the years. Most others don't find it hard, and this is only a place where anyone wants to participate because enough people make the effort to raise the standards rather than drag them down.

https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Edit: looking over your comment feed, I even see you reminding others of the guidelines, so it's not that you don't know them. Please try harder to be an upstanding community member in all your participation here.

tomhow··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Please don't act like a jerk. That comment was already marked [flagged] and the account is now banned. The absence of that doesn't make your comment defensible. The whole thread is a hellscape, and I was doing what I could to deal with some of it, very late in the evening, in between other moderation cleanup work. It's not a good defense that you posted an awful comment, knowingly, only because you thought that moderators were going to clean up the mess anyway. This community only works when people make the effort to raise the standards rather than dragging them down further.

We've banned this account. We've asked you politely many times over the years to observe the guidelines, but still your comment feed is infused with belligerent, fulminatory rhetoric. When someone acts like this, eventually we have to assume they want to be banned. If you don't want to be banned, you can email us at hn@ycombinator.com and demonstrate a commitment to reforming your style of participation here.
tomhow··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
Your comment was downvoted and flagged to an extreme extent by fellow community members. Responding to community expectations is central to what we do and this community expects comments opening with “Retard fucking take” to be killed, any day of the week.

Own your poor behavior and stop fixating on me. You could have written multiple substantive comments in the time you’ve spent on this.

tomhow··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
Like I said, you need to stop acting like an entitled jerk. It’s not our job to clean up your mess and besides, if we went around editing people’s comments there would be uproar. So, enough of this carry on, thanks. Just follow the guidelines like almost everyone else does. It’s really not hard and basic respect is not an unreasonable expectation.
tomhow··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
This isn’t difficult. You can think what you want and argue for what you believe in vigorously. We work hard to make this a site where everyone can do that, no matter what they’re arguing for, and we take criticism from all sides and from all kinds of people for the way we do that.

The guidelines are simple and are designed to stop this place from going up in flames daily. They are here to protect you just as much as anyone else.

Please stop acting like an entitled jerk and have some respect for this community if you’re expecting anyone here read the ideas you want to express.

tomhow··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
On principle I’m not reading this.

Your comment I replied to began with “Retarded fucking take.”

I don’t care what opinion you’re expressing; most of the time, including this time, I barely even know what opinion is being expressed. It doesn’t matter. My role is to uphold the guidelines and a comment like that is the most straightforward guidelines breach we ever see here.

Disagreement and vigorous debate is fine here; it’s one of the main purposes of the site. HN has existed for almost 20 years, entirely because we have guidelines and uphold them evenly.

Stop deflecting and sermonizing and find a way to express your points without that kind of filth.

tomhow··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
You didn’t point out “important facts”; you’ve raised vague associations and extrapolated them in a way that seems damning. There’s no evidence I can find that this man or his family members support this federal administration or its policies. Most of them haven’t been public representatives for over a decade. The last one left office in 2018. And all of that still has absolutely nothing to do with the macro forces affecting demand and prices for wine grapes throughout the world.

> Should I have worded it in a different way?

You shouldn’t have raised it at all. It’s a weak, tangential point, almost completely substance-free, and is in clear breach of the guidelines. HN is only a place where people want to participate because most people try to make solid points, and avoid posting junk like this.

tomhow··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Please don't jeer like this on HN. Wine grape growers all over the world are experiencing similar declines in demand. The same thing is happening in Australia (I know people personally affected by it) and it has nothing to do with any flavor of political rule.

Please always observe the guidelines when participating here, which include avoiding political/ideological battle and off-topic tangents. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

tomhow··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
We don't know enough to justify the jeering. We don't know he was rich in 1996. We don't know he's rich now. We can read between the lines and infer that he possibly still retains Nvidia stock that is worth a lot, but we don't know that for sure. We only know that a tranche of stock that he was entitled to remains with Nvidia and is worth a lot of money now. Maybe he would have done really admirable, benevolent things with that money. Who knows? It doesn't matter. It's never ok to jeer or sneer on HN.

Don’t jeer or snipe on HN. Even if your framing is true, it’s an awful way to address anyone. If it’s false (which it likely is) it’s utterly vile.

Plaease don't spoil threads with comments like this. The writing doesn't come up as LLM-authored according to the tools we use (polished, perhaps, but not generated).

tomhow··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Acting like a jerk is not the best way to deal with bad content. Our software autokills generated comments and we downweight slop posts multiple times daily – when we know about it. Maybe the way to deal with junk content is not to create more junk content? You can just email us.
tomhow··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
Stop acting like a jerk here. If you have something of substance to say, you can use full sentences and avoid vile slurs. We've cut you plenty of slack because you've had substantive things to say, but that can't continue if you keep this up. This is a place for people who have basic standards of decency, at the very least. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
tomhow··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Please stop this. We've asked you before to observe the guidelines. Please stop commenting like this. It’s totally unacceptable to post abusive comments like this, no matter who or what you're replying to.
