well with regards to exercise: I absolutely love gardening. It's not something I do "for excerise".

as for eating healthy. It's all about finding some recipes you like: finding that over on the ven diagram between healthy eating and love to eat. of course if you grew up on a completely fast food diet you're body will be way too addicted. I suppose it's like asking a heroin addict to not do heroin everyday: that may feel like torture too.

for my projected lifespan, i don't think this thing is taking into account my blue zone diet, exercise or my intermittent fasting.

Is it really greed though? Or just the struggle to make ends meat?

I feel such concerns about one's legacy are quite the first world problem.

But it's still a great post.

fats don't all do that well on satiety studies. just look at the holz studies. most of the satieting things didn't have much fats in them: potatoes, apples and oranges.

only eating fruit is not an extreme diet at all, especially if you're consuming the right number of calories. what makes you think it's extreme?
tomcar288··on “Green smoothie cleanse” causing acute oxalate nephropathy
Fact check: Kale only has 20mg of oxalates per 100g which means 2 lbs has about 180mg of oxalates. https://e-cnr.org/ViewImage.php?Type=TH&aid=487614&id=T9&afn...

180mg of oxalates isn't that much.

Most people consume 200 to 300 mg of oxalates per day: https://www.webmd.com/diet/foods-high-in-oxalates

and with regards to water. I believe, it's when you sip on water all day that the danger of brain swelling occurs because your body looses the ability to gauge how much water is in it's system and doesn't quite know how much to excrete.

too much of anything isn't good. it's time to start embracing less. it's okay to drink a bit too much water at once because your body can excrete it without problems.

i know exactly what you mean. I can eat like 4 LBS of cucumbers in one sitting and still feel like I could eat a pizza afterwards. when you consume super low calorie foods like cucs and tomatoes, zuchinni, the body actually keeps on counting the calories with incredible accuracy and adjusts your hunger/appetite accordingly. But, I'll say, it does help a little bit and you do get a bit of discount by going with low calorie veggies, it's just not a silver bullet. at the end of the day you'll still consume less calories than you would have: just don't expect one large salad to fill you up. at the end of the day, you still need to go hungry to loose weight or keep it off.

that assumes the market is competitive: this is not always the case and is less and less so, every year that goes by. there are so many products out there that used over and over by the same companies for no other reason than it's too painful to switch.

i generally water in the mornings about 5am to 9am, the recommended time but with one difference. For fall crops that go in early: like brassicas, I will sometimes water them at noon or afternoon, to help keep them cool on those really hot days. I don't want them to go to seed, so I need to keep them cool.
tomcar288··on You Need to Pay Your Engineers
First, try to negotiate on what's being delivered. there's lots of ways to cut corners and cut down the amount of work that's being done. don't be afraid to take on technical debt, if that's the company's attitude. Look for ways to reduce scope and cut things down.

and if that doesn't work, you just go on working at your own pace. they may or may not fire you. It's not the end of the world if you do. You'll always be able to get another job, that's how capitalism works. it's all part of the regular life cycle of getting a job.

tomcar288··on You Need to Pay Your Engineers
Look if the company decides not to hire more engineers. That doesn't mean you go and spend 80+ hours to finish everything!!! If they don't hire more engineers, they're telling you that the work you're doing is of limited value and you should act accordingly. and if that means a project takes 3 times or 4 times longer then so be it. That's their decision. You have to set limits according to your job description and your work/life balance and make enough time in your work week for mental sanity (maybe some meditation or walk in the park time). that's all part of the job.
tomcar288··on You Need to Pay Your Engineers
>>> I’ve since learned that even if you are good at your job, it will not magically get noticed. You have to be a full on advocate for yourself at all times and basically shove your work in the face of your boss or else they will think you are doing nothing.

Absolutely! You need to make a big deal out of every little accomplishment and every tiny bit of work you do. And make sure to do it frequently, like every meeting, every week, every one on one. You never stop selling yourself. Otherwise, they're just going to assume your sitting around twiddling your thumbs.

what does bitcoin have to do with it?

If anything, holding bitcoin (with self custody) protects you from this sort of thing because there's no counter party risk. From that standpoint, holding bitcoin does not have counter party risk, unlike holding gold or equities in an online account.

don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

tomcar288··on Every person on the planet should have their own website
i wish there was a search engine that could find sites like that. there's so much value in people's personal experiences. For instance, i've searched for blog posts talking about individuals experience with setting up green houses and what temperatures they can keep overnight vs daytime. all the major engines refuse any attempt to find something that's not on a super high level domain or news site.

most of the web is unreachable. sigh....

tomcar288··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
>> I would not want to live in a house whose builders took an “innovative” approach to dealing with “regulation”. Building codes are often written in blood.

Not everyone is so rich. People should have the choice about whether or not they want an unnecessarily expensive house. Regulations assume one size fits all and that everyone wants the same thing This isn't true. and trying to outlaw poverty doesn't work, it just makes things worse.

I wouldn't want to live in a house that was unnecessarily complicated to point of doubling it's cost just because of endless regulations forced vast increases in costs. You should see one of the links shared above: it talks a great deal about what's driving the increased costs in housing and it's all to do with increased building complexity, much driven by regulation.

tomcar288··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
they are deeply conservative but saying that regulations are in place for the purpose of keeping home values is reaching. In my experience, there are a lot of HOA directors who are just control freaks who just want to lock everything down to prevent change.
tomcar288··on Toyota Is Right: We Need More Hybrid Cars and Fewer EVs. Here’s Why
most of those are all gas powered.

the ones that are electric are usually limited to 28mph or just a little more than that. also, very few if any are 4 seaters.

tomcar288··on Toyota Is Right: We Need More Hybrid Cars and Fewer EVs. Here’s Why
Yes, that would be the most environmentally friendly option. I think, a lot of people miss the fact that a lot of the oil is used in the production of the car and battery. there's a breakdown on this somewhere.

Personally, I think a big part of the issue is the size of vehicles that have been mandated by regulatory agencies. Why don't we move towards micromobility?, something between a E-bike and a super light weight car. that would require far less lithium, and far less oil.

tomcar288··on Toyota Is Right: We Need More Hybrid Cars and Fewer EVs. Here’s Why
>>> "Electric vehicles generate fewer carbon emissions than those powered by combustion engines over their lifetimes, and what you’re about to read doesn’t dispute that. But EV adoption is tripping over range limitations, patchy charging networks, and high prices resulting from the cost of the batteries that power them."

It sounds like EVs are the best option long term: it's just that in the short term there's a few snafus along the way.

Personally, I'm only going to buy another EV and nothing else will do, even if I have to wait a year, two years or even 5 years. I've got an electric bike and I know how to use it.

can someone explain to me, why faster and faster chips are required? I look at my iphone 7+ and my wife's iphone 11 and her's is no more capable than mine, other than maybe wireless charging. our stupid new washing machine has chips in it and it doesn't do any better job than the last chipless model we had. and i'm seriously not looking forward to getting a new car with screens all over the place rather than knobs that actually work. my latest work computer a brand new mac doesn't do anything i need that can't be done by my 2014 macbook pro.

where is all this drive to smaller and faster and faster coming from? and why?

tomcar288··on Why Britain doesn’t build
I'm a homeowner as well and although I've benefited enormously to the tune of 100s of thousand of dollars in equity gains, I'm disgusted by the lack of will to fix this problem. I'm not the most selfless person in the world, far from it but I would never vote against someone else's right to build cost effective shelter (building regulations/requirements) or acquire the land needed (zoning/land use policy) to do so. I don't understand how people don't get that everyone should have a right to be somewhere on this planet: anything less is completely inhumane.

tomcar288··on Cyclists wearing helmets seen as “less human” than those without

tomcar288··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
the land can be almost anywhere. the point is that people shouldn't forced onto tiny reservations. Land should be abundant enough to allow the cost to be low enough for everyone to easily afford, as well as it's rent (property taxes).
tomcar288··on North America is now the growth leader for new battery factories
it's not just the US that is behind in having the minerals necessary: it's the entire world! In order to electrify every car in the world, it would take half the world's known supply of lithium.
tomcar288··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
the key to solving homelessness is not affordable housing, regulation or vast amounts of spending or even UBI. The answer is UBL ==> Universal basic Land. It's the idea that every person should have some means of having some land and being allowed to build on it. maybe not in downtown, maybe not any specific area, but at least somewhere. you can't just tell people to whole up in a homeless shelter. I found out that the life expectency of the average homeless person is in their 40s, Yikes! there should be someplace for everyone on this planet. give people some land, or let them buy it for a relatively reasonable amount and don't charge them rent (property taxes), at least for up to a certain value (say the first 50K or 100k). Once you have land, and freedom to build on it, you can build your home or have a construction company do it for you, in a way that's cost effective.

Even the native american indians and countless others in the global south with far less income per capita had/have homes. It shouldn't be so hard: the problem is land use policy and regulations.

tomcar288··on Global fertility has collapsed, with profound economic consequences
well, we don't have a choice. when the standard of living drops so low that you can't even provide enough shelter for a couple, how are you going to have kids? all those ipads and electricity you mentioned won't help you one bit when you're out on the street.
