tomasphan··on How video games inspire great UX (2019)
They said “most people” which is wrong.
tomasphan··on How video games inspire great UX (2019)
No one here thinks that. Yes there are some Linux tryhards but 99% of users on HN understand that UI/UX should be least friction.
tomasphan··on The UV index is not the warm sensation of sunlight on bare skin
I don't think so. If you controlled for temperature and season I bet you wouldn't be able to tell.
tomasphan··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
What is your choice? I personally can't think of a better backup than high-bandwidth satellite communications.
tomasphan··on Anthropic, OpenAI et al. face antitrust suit for agreeing to slow AI development
However, the Trump administration shot down this idea, with the president himself saying, “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX.”

Wise words as always Mr President.

ATC seems like a great place to have redundancy with a starlink dish on the roof.
tomasphan··on One-Electron Universe
How does this work with QFT? If an electron is just an excitation in a field then it being “one electron” is meaningless.
tomasphan··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
yesterday I visited a page with TWO! captchas side by side. When I got through the second one the first one had expired...
tomasphan··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
All the time. Politically speaking the past is quite embarrassing.
tomasphan··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
Sorry, I meant "bread" as in money.
tomasphan··on US Customs supervisor busted for stealing hardware from Homeland Security PCs
Because it runs Windows hehe
tomasphan··on AI models don't kill people – people kill people
“Bad ASI would pretend to be good *until* it could execute a plan to kill everyone all at once”.

So not today but tomorrow it could engineer an airborne virus. The point is it can come up with chess moves that are inconceivable to us.

tomasphan··on JetKVM Mini
It’s 3x the cost of jetKVM though. For someone with 8 machines in their home lab this is a big commitment.
tomasphan··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
I agree with you, but suggesting Astroturf is apparently against the rules here. I like it because it needs less water for football fields.
tomasphan··on The Helicopter with Radioactive Blades
The titanium spar is filled with gas. If there was a crack in the spar the gas would escape, therefore tripping the pressure sensitive radiation shield. Releasing radiation that can be detected inside the helicopter.

Wireless systems aren’t used for opsec reasons.

tomasphan··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
The enterprising Germans all left for the US to make bread
tomasphan··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
Fastmail seems great
tomasphan··on I wanna live an NPC life
This post got the definition of NPC entirely backwards. NPC = follows the rules exactly like they’re programmed to. That means not thinking outside the box, ignoring gut feelings, adhering to a routine, consumerism and generally politically unimaginative.

The blacksmith from Skyrim is a great example because along comes a player, puts a bucket on your head and steals all your stuff without any complaints.

tomasphan··on Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America
"Oops our Google Maps team is on vacation, an intern messed up the lake names microservice called "Lacus" and it is currently unavailable for changes. It will take the Google Maps team 2 years to make this change."

Thats how they could have pushed back against a dictator. Every finger you give him is a hand you lose.

tomasphan··on Claude Code is going reduce limits by 25% from September 14
They are reducing to +25% from current +50%. So while the title is inaccurate in percentage it is factually correct that limits are going down.
tomasphan··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
Exactly, that’s the last sentence in my original comment.
tomasphan··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
We’re just speculating on the economics here so let’s agree to say making it illegal is not fixing the problem.
tomasphan··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
This is not an obsession with hurting animals. It’s survival and earning a living for these Indonesian fishermen.

To incentivize them to stop you have to give them better options. In this case, teach a man to not fish with explosives and you’ll feed him for the rest of his life.

tomasphan··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
Why not reply to that top comment? Its still there.
tomasphan··on The Vibe Tax
How do you know what’s smart enough to get the job done? Could actually be an interesting empirical question.
tomasphan··on Show HN: Dev // Cyber Toolkit – a free floating dev/cybersecurity widget
Check out Cyberchef
tomasphan··on Cancer-related mortality among US pilots and flight attendants
Lead is bad because the high energy particles hitting lead can multiply particle count. You’d need a significant amount, like 25cm thickness. Too much for weight limits of any airplane.
tomasphan··on LinkedIn cracks down on automated content with AI detection button
My entire feed obliterated in an instant
tomasphan··on Does your friend group force you to buy a new game every week? This is for you
I thought it'd be fun to alert me just before a game sale ends, and check the sentiment/reviews. Its kind of what I wish Steam would include in their wishlist alerts but I understand why they don't.
tomasphan··on Apple proposes to take a 15% cut of purchases made outside the App Store
Its sad how many cool apps no longer exists in the app store. I had a cool fluid sim, bridge building game and a game called Soccer Physics that I could play coop on a plane. Not sure why they're gone but presumably the creator didn't want to shell out developer fees.
