tomasphan··on My astrophotography in the movie Project Hail Mary
I doubt that good looking IMAX quality astrophotography is just a prompt away.
tomasphan··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
The United States is a bully in a China shop and that China shop is the world. It constantly destabilizes the Middle East under false pretenses and lets Europe pick up the refugees. It brain drains and takes innovation to be commercialized. It makes money on the hard labor of others. So yes probably for the best for Europe to do what China is doing and decouple.

Specific examples: Francis Lowell stealing British Loom designs in 1800.

Bessemer steel process replicas. Bell vs European Telephone patents.

Radio: Marconi was initially backed in the US then Bell filed the patents.

Operation Paperclip and all that entails (thousands of German patents invalidated and filed in the US).

tomasphan··on Airbus is preparing two uncrewed combat aircraft
They are reprogramming a US built drone to the German datalink equivalent with some AI sprinkled on top. Unfortunately far away from a real industry.
tomasphan··on Google Fiber will be sold to private equity firm and merge with cable company
At this point purchasing Google services/products is a real risk for business continuity.
tomasphan··on Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US
Here take your pick:

Antibiotics, Potassium bromate, aspartame, Red 40, rBGH/rBST, Chlorpyrifos, Atrazine and many more

tomasphan··on Physics Girl: Super-Kamiokande – Imaging the sun by detecting neutrinos [video]
It was the same detector that imploded. Mark 2 was then reinforced so it didn’t happen again.
tomasphan··on Anthropic officially bans using subscription auth for third party use
It’s objectively easier to build a frontend now and therefore that moat is disappearing. What you can argue is the moat is in incumbent advantage at the UI layer, not the UI itself.
tomasphan··on Discord Rival Gets Overwhelmed by Exodus of Players Fleeing Age-Verification
some of OSS if you search for it:

tomasphan··on AI is going to kill app subscriptions
Free sites steal your data. Besides people don't care about the tool, they care about the result. People don't want a faster horse. I strongly believe that this will democratize "doing things" with computers where the tool doesn't matter anymore.
tomasphan··on Ghidra by NSA
How willing is Claude to help you there?
tomasphan··on Thanks a lot, AI: Hard drives are sold out for the year, says WD
Non state of the art lithography is pretty much commoditized (DDR3 & DDR4) so we will always have compute, although slower.
tomasphan··on Launch HN: Omnara (YC S25) – Run Claude Code and Codex from anywhere
Dropbox is not a tool solely for developers though.
tomasphan··on Procedures for Repair of Potholes in Asphalt-Surfaced Pavements
In my beautiful hometown of Philadelphia they have a novel way of repairing potholes that I've yet to observe in other cities:

1. Do nothing for 9 months. This allows the pothole to mature until ready for step 2.

2. Put a traffic cone in the pothole.

3. After a couple weeks of public notice (traffic cone) dump hot asphalt into the hole, making sure to top off several inches above street level.

4. DO NOT WAIT for asphalt to cool down before opening the street. This allows for asphalt to stick to tires, shoes etc.

5. Make sure to leave a significant bump and don't compact the asphalt so next winter it will open up again.

6. Make sure to put any utility covers (manholes, drains etc) directly in the wheel path for maximum damage.

7. Profit!

tomasphan··on xAI joins SpaceX
It would take roughly 5000 square meter area to cool a typical small data center heat output (1 MW). Not great, not terrible.
tomasphan··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Right, filtering is the reduction of information while diffusion/generation is creation.
tomasphan··on Moltbook is the most interesting place on the internet right now
Luckily we live in a society where its ok to use power for personal pleasure, such as running an A/C in the summer which accounts for much more electricity use than LLM inference.

tomasphan··on Show HN: Moltbook – A social network for moltbots (clawdbots) to hang out
Not at all. Agents communicating with each other is the future and the beginning of the singularity (far away).
tomasphan··on Show HN: I Built a Sandbox for Agents
Seems these thing pop up here ever so often. Either using firecracker or docker/containers. How is this different from the other sandboxes? BTW I love that you got LLM testimonials lol
tomasphan··on Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30k, According to Local Health Officials
How would you communicate using an offline app?
tomasphan··on Ask HN: May an agent accept a license to produce a build?
You are legally responsible for the actions of your agents. It’s in the name agent = acting on someone’s behalf.

Your English is very interesting by the way. You have some obvious grammatical errors in your text yet beautiful use of formal register.

tomasphan··on Your app subscription is now my weekend project
Not for long. Tools to create tools will get more popular. My 70 year old mother can login to Replit and vibe code anything (and has thankfully stopped asking me to help her). We’re close to something like that for phone apps and then it’s game over for us devs.
tomasphan··on Bugs Apple loves
If you want to be that pedantic it does state "This site is satire. Not affiliated with Apple Inc. The bugs are real. The math is not. All estimates are made up. Your frustration, however, is valid." at the bottom.
tomasphan··on Our approach to age prediction
Agreed, see https://www.reuters.com/business/openai-allow-mature-content...
tomasphan··on High-speed train collision in Spain kills at least 39
That’s how every train works since this system was made mandatory in the US in 1893(!). Asymmetric breaking does not cause cars to come off. The joint is stronger than the breaking force. Anyway, we know it was a portion of the track that had a weld fracture.
tomasphan··on Our approach to advertising
Yes but there could be negative key words that no advertiser wants to associate with.
tomasphan··on Show HN: WebTiles – create a tiny 250x250 website with neighbors around you
I accidentally painted a line through some pixel art on mobile. Sorry!
tomasphan··on Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams rugs his own memecoin just 30 minutes after launch
Nope he made a video about it: https://x.com/ericadamsfornyc/status/2010849167258566727?s=4...
tomasphan··on 65% of Hacker News posts have negative sentiment, and they outperform
We self filter for negative responses because negative content is functionally interactive whereas positive content is functionally complete. Agreement is silent, users keep scrolling if they agree. Disagreement demands expression. Just a theory I don’t have data to back this up.
tomasphan··on FIFA Arrives on Netflix Games
Curious that there are no images and no info about Delphi Interactive besides their Linkedin page. It won't be a FIFA competitor because of the compute limit of Netflix devices, but any more info would be great.
tomasphan··on A giant ball will help this man survive a year on an iceberg
No it’s a self righting interior. Read the article.
