> the perception today that San Francisco and cities generally are unsafe

Did Bob get killed by perception?

In Japan you can leave your laptop at the cafe, on the table, unlocked, while you go to the bathroom.

I find it sad that in SF this is considered “amazing”. This is not amazing. This should be considered the norm.

Nice! In Japan you can leave your laptop in the cafe while you go to the bathroom. This should NOT be amazing. Why do people find this amazing? This should be the norm. Sadly, SF people find it amazing.

Another thing you should know as a European about SF is that saying the truth will get you downvoted if the truth doesn’t sound nice
tomandrews88··on Remembering Bob Lee
> being sucked into his craziness

Just curious what was he like in terms of the craziness? Partying? Skydiving?

By Americans (probably from SF)

Shhh! Don’t talk logic. He doesn’t like that.

> I don't know if it really makes a lot of sense to compare the two.

Certainly in terms of crime, it doesn’t

I spend a lot of time in Zurich, and I’m in tech. Lotta googlers there. I haven’t seen any discussions like this about Zurich yet. When someone says Zurich is quite safe people nod and move on. It’s not news and it’s not controversial.

Get out of here with your logical arguments! You’re ruining the fun for all the people that don’t think crime is a big deal.

The “It’s not hot today because hell is hotter” argument.

SoMa actually was nice! But that was long ago, before you-know-what happened, but let’s not get into politics.

> I just want to get a quick grasp of what exactly has happened

TLDR: there are far fewer consequences for crime now in large cities like SF, NY, LA. The results are as expected.

Funny how people try so hard to show/prove/argue that SF is safe.

If it was, these discussions wouldn’t exist.

You won’t see these threads about Zurich, just saying.

Great, now Bank of America can take unlimited risks!
tomandrews88··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
There was. But it’ll be hard for tech people to admit that, hence the negative comments here
tomandrews88··on Oxide pays all employees $191,227 (Bay Area startup)
Then they’re voluntarily limiting their income to be at a company they like. Nothing wrong with that.
tomandrews88··on Oxide pays all employees $191,227 (Bay Area startup)
Exactly. If the CEO was serious he’d give everyone the same equity. Otherwise it’s just virtue signaling marketing. Too easy.

I’m basically reading this as “If you’re exceptionally good at what you do, don’t work here”
