tokenizer··on Glenn Greenwald pushes back hard on latest Edward Snowden “revelations”
Complete Speculation. Is there video evidence that he said this?

But yes, even if true, lets hold proles to the word of the law, while writing new laws that demonize all whistleblowing and the exposing of corruption.

I find it funny how we always get into the character attacks. Lets talk about the leaks.

Bradley Manning -> Traitor

Julian Assange -> Rapist

Edward Snowden -> Spy(?)/Traitor/Ethical Person who knew about the abuses and attempted to follow through with uncovering them?

You can call it by different names all you want, but ultimately we can either support the act, or demonize the individuals.

tokenizer··on Edward Snowden has not entered Russia - Sergei Lavrov
Well as a foreigner, this whole entire debacle has changed my entire outlook on the US. I don't have faith in your institutions anymore at all.

I understand the public at large will not feel this way, and will simply pass to the next distraction shortly, but this lack of faith I've built up, is going to stay with me for a while.

So instead of a happy Canadian tuning in to your elections and being extremely excited about the future like I was in 2008, I truly believe that your entire system is completely hopeless. No true change can come out of it.

tokenizer··on Newly disclosed papers give rules for NSA surveillance without a warrant
Well, hopefully this works, but people theorized the same thing about Wikileaks. Its story died without any major change.

tokenizer··on 57% Fear Government Will Use NSA Data to Harass Political Opponents
I guess our best hope is that at least one country can retain it.
tokenizer··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
Agreed. Hopefully it never gets to that point, and from what I see, it wont.

I was just referring to the effects of these variables on people's minds. I agree with you that it's almost always contextual, but you'll find the odd person or two that feel very strongly about a low odd potentiality and it can definitely make you feel like their are some crazies...

But I think everyone does this to some degree. If you cancel a marathon in Halifax because of a 5 seconds phone call to the police referencing a the Boston Bomber, then most understand that... However, when one looks at the facts, in my country no one has died from Terrorism in the last 9 years... a far fetched reason for this government power grab. So I don't know. Maybe the Gun Nuts are wrong, and they have nothing to fear. But maybe most of the populations of OECD countries are completely wrong in this manufactured fear.

tokenizer··on Obama, NSA, Verizon and DoJ sued for $3B over PRISM
So as someone who wants someone to tackle this issue, and who doesn't know or care about who or what this person is or did, why should their prior history mean anything in this context? Also, is this a challenge to simply make money, or is it a challenge to revert any sort of law?
tokenizer··on Obama, NSA, Verizon and DoJ sued for $3B over PRISM
As a Canadian who is seriously concerned about this political issue in your country which affects me, I have to ask, why are you bringing character into this? And also, why does his character matter if the intentions are good?
tokenizer··on PRISM kills the cloud
The first step has been taken: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/06/07/2120141/why-the-...

Quote: "A citizenry that’s constantly on guard for secret, unaccountable surveillance is one that’s constantly being remade along the lines the state would prefer. Foucault illustrated this point by reference to a hypothetical prison called the Panopticon. Designed by utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, the Panopticon is a prison where all cells can be seen from a central tower shielded such that the guards can see out but the prisoners can’t see in. The prisoners in the Panopticon could thus never know whether they were being surveilled, meaning that they have to, if they want to avoid running the risk of severe punishment, assume that they were being watched at all times. Thus, the Panopticon functioned as an effective tool of social control even when it wasn’t being staffed by a single guard."

tokenizer··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
You can't, because a rebellion/revolution is a potentiality. Sure, it seemed unlikely, but now not so much.

Would I criticize someone for not locking their front door? No. Locks only keep honest people honest, and the chances of your property being broken into are fairly slim.

Would I criticize someone for preparing themselves for a collapse/rebellion/revolution of some kind? Absolutely not. The cost of not doing so is much higher than lost possessions. Rights, Your life, etc...

The main thing to take away from this, is that you can't know for sure, and everybody reacts to those percentages differently. It's better to be safe than sorry, or you can live fast and die young without worries.

I should note that the duality above can be taken in both contexts.

Love reading Hemingway. Love concise code.
tokenizer··on What is a Full Stack developer? (2012)
A rational voice in a sea of specifics.

It's all about touching every vital task to operating an application.

* Domain Configuration * Site Architecture * Database * Pre Processor * HTML + CSS + Other UI * JS

It doesn't matter how "knowledgable" of each operation your are as long as you can get to point a to z. I've work plenty of developers who wear only one hat.

tokenizer··on U.S. urges states not to allow general use of self-driving cars
Regardless of how bad I or someone driving around me is, I would rather have complete control. If I'm going to relinquish that control, then the alternative better be superb. This is one of those paradigms where we need software engineering to be flawless, which history can tell us, is never the case.

Not disagreeing with you just offering an opinion which is more centered and cautious.

tokenizer··on Poll: "Giff" or "Jif"?
Yeah, the creator has recently come out and has said that that is the correct pronunciation.

tokenizer··on Poll: "Giff" or "Jif"?
I'm only 23 years old, and I hail from the East Coast of Canada. I've never heard anyone pronounce it "Jif", but I had read on reddit that some people have had the opposite experience, never hearing the "Giff" pronunciation.
tokenizer··on Soylent Campaign
Not get caught up in the hate/arguing, but if they're raising money for this, and will be apparently working within the FDA guidelines, wouldn't they have strenuous testing before they release this to market?
tokenizer··on The Lethality of Loneliness

tokenizer··on The Lethality of Loneliness
Interesting. This makes sense from a layman's reasoning perspective as well. People who spend an extreme amount of time with others don't spend enough with themselves and probably lose their identity. I guess my question is, what constitutes interaction? Does the brief conversations with my coworkers count? What about a phone call to my mother? Does all of this interaction being analysed have to in person and in depth?
tokenizer··on Ask HN: How safe are .io domains?
I have an io domain with no issues. I registered it from https://iwantmyname.com/, which I would recommend.
tokenizer··on The future of world education?
All three. There's no way online will work for everyone. At least, that's what it appears like now. Many drop courses almost them immediately. Link (PDF): http://www.kfrankola.com/Documents/Why%20online%20learners%2...

My theory is that like many things in our postmodern world, Education will be tiered:

You'll have the industrial school, which most people will go to, for jobs and a basic, crappy education. --This will educate the unmotivated more than any other, more independent form of learning.

You'll have the internet based, self leaning resources we have now, for the motivated and willing. --This will be used for people unsatisfied with the basic form of education.

Great info site. I don't understand why the US can't simply take one of the many pages from Canada's book on this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_political_financing_in_...

We don't even do away with Private funding and we're not without our problems up here, but one thing is for certain, we have much quicker, and cheaper elections.

tokenizer··on Is “Star Trek” Socialist?
Nicely said. My favourite insights into this system were in deep space nine, where many people did work for a living, and earned latinum.

I for one, am very much for sharing/pooling of necessary resources, but even in Star Trek, they didn't really explain the hows.

tokenizer··on Ad industry threatens Firefox users with more ads if Mozilla moves on tracking
This seems like a typical response. I'm curious if Mozilla will cave or continue.

While I like the idea of restricting third party cookies, I can understand the advertising businesses argument. They need to know what you want, so you can click on the ad, thereby providing a small amount of revenue to both website and advertiser.
