tofuahdude··on ‘World of Warcraft’ players trick AI-scraping website into publishing nonsense
The jury is definitely still out on whether that content is actually worthless inventory to advertisers.

Shit tier websites with "quality" ads (ie something I want to click on more) can be very valuable to advertisers.

This fight needs to be fought by search, not ad tech. Ad tech has too many perverse incentives.

tofuahdude··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
Yet here you are talking about old spice due to their ads. It worked. They got what they wanted from you.
tofuahdude··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
And so will they.
tofuahdude··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
He's been broadcasting exactly this plan for several months ("X", The Everything App), which is what WeChat is.
tofuahdude··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
Same, except that I've added Obsidian as a UI on top of it. Check in markdown, have decent visual on top.
tofuahdude··on Fire Mark Zuckerberg
Fiduciary duty is not an obligation to make the business successful; it is an obligation to do what you think is in the best interests of shareholders.

In other words, to TRY to make it successful, but failure still exists in this world.

tofuahdude··on W3C invites applications to be our next CEO
I'm kind of surprised the JD doesn't describe more qualifications and requirements. It's a pretty high level role.
tofuahdude··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Occam's razor is a safe starting point for this situation.
tofuahdude··on Secret ChatGPT plugins can be revealed by removing a parameter from an API call
Then they're able to use an unreleased plugin. A user being able to do something that the company intends to prevent is a vulnerability.
tofuahdude··on We apologize. We did a terrible job announcing the end of Docker Free Teams
Given the number of times that Docker the company has rugged the community, I am highly pessimistic of their organization / paying them. I'd rather run my own registry.
tofuahdude··on Stripe announces new round of funding and plan to provide employee liquidity
So that the investors end up with preferred stock.
tofuahdude··on JavaScript and TypeScript features of the last 3 years
Can confirm. This is the best use case I've come across. You can dynamically compose queries and not even think about argument positioning. No concern about injection. Better performance than named variables that are translated into positional.
tofuahdude··on JavaScript and TypeScript features of the last 3 years
The classic example is .then .catch callbacks vs async await, though .then is still occasionally useful.
tofuahdude··on A senior engineer's guide to the system design interview
If you carry this attitude, you aren't a senior engineer.
tofuahdude··on Does Google need a new CEO?
We're in the middle of the hype phase for LLMs; it'll die down when hallucinations are widely understood and the investment community + public realize that none of these organizations have built something that replaces Search (YET).

Calling for Sundar's head during the hype phase is premature.

tofuahdude··on Show HN: We built an open-source LaunchDarkly alternative for B2Bs
How is using LaunchDarkly home-rolling a feature flag system?
tofuahdude··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
For what reasons would AWS falter in less than a decade if it were on its own?
tofuahdude··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
3 years in
tofuahdude··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Except that nowhere did I advocate for child labor. That is obviously abhorrent and clear false equivalence.

Are the employees adults? Yes. Are they being forced to work there? No.

Are they choosing / trying to work there because the pay is higher than their alternatives? Yes.

Very different than child labor.

tofuahdude··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Rising supply of jobs increases wages and quality of life. This is a good thing.

The wages they're paying are substantially higher than all the local averages. This is a good thing.

How is this "severely exploiting"?

The alternative is that the Kenyan economy remain isolated, small, and impoverished. This is a bad thing.

tofuahdude··on Bike helmets: what the science says about an American safety obsession
I'd be surprised if "demand" is the right demeanor to use when optimizing for public/social outcomes. In my experience, it's much easier to convince people of your position with a more calm, measured perspective than "demanding" anything.
tofuahdude··on Show HN: Product Hunt Launch Dashboard
I truly loath product hunt in its current state.

It's just a game of who can get the most friends/bots to vote.

Further, it is only relevant to those present in the echo chamber.

tofuahdude··on The IAB loves tracking users but hates users tracking them
I'm also interested in this setup!
tofuahdude··on Medium Embraces Mastodon
I'm pretty surprised by this and certainly don't trust Medium's intentions.

Medium's entire model has been centralizing blogs and writing to accrue profits in a centralized c corp.

tofuahdude··on U.S. moves to seize $460M Robinhood stake linked to Sam Bankman-Fried
Living at your parent's house with an ankle bracelet, only out of jail on a $250 million bond is quite a different scenario than being in a Bahamian mansion.
tofuahdude··on Modules, not microservices
"Unexpected consequences" for a core piece of the technical approach suggests there are architects that are in the wrong role.
tofuahdude··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
No, it isn't. The entire ad-tech industry is built on CPM (latin mille for thousand).
tofuahdude··on MariaDB plunges nearly 40% in NYSE debut after SPAC merger
Or is it the other way around?
tofuahdude··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
It is more accurate to separate software from the people operating businesses that use the software.

There are MANY (so, so many) scams in crypto, but the underlying protocols are just protocols.

Just like there are MANY (so, so many) scams that operate with dollars and in the traditional banking system.

Humans are gonna be humans.

tofuahdude··on Request for Startups: Climate Tech
Ironically many YCombinator businesses support the opposite. Perhaps the first thing YC needs is a mirror.
