It's also free with a tweet or fb post. I tried but got the message that the token had expired.
toddrew··on Ask HN: How to solve short term cash flow problem going into an accelerator?
Your answer doesn't make sense to me.

Why would you have thought twice? It's $40,000 equity free seed capital they give us.

Did you mean: What did "they" get in return for the money?

I spent a decade as a communicator in the navy and radio teletype is still the primary method of communication at sea.

toddrew··on Why do professional photographers charge so much?
You're paying for whatever was agreed upon. This is an industry standard but if the pricing structure wasn't clear beforehand then that was the photographer's fault.
toddrew··on Why do professional photographers charge so much?
The public doesn't need to be educated because the public rarely hires professional fashion photographers. A professional fashion photographer should be making their money from brands and modeling agencies.

The problem is that many photographers do vanity work for amateur models who for many reasons (age, location etc...) will never make a career as a professional model. Professional models don't pay for their own photo shoots. They're working enough contracts to not have to fill their portfolio with spec work, or are represented by an agency who will cover the costs of a shoot.

Many photographers who shoot fashion style portraits and make a bit of money doing it, consider themselves professional fashion photographers and expect to be paid as one. The problem is that they'll never command the same prices by doing portfolio work as they would doing work in the industry for brands.

toddrew··on Why do professional photographers charge so much?
I'm not a fan of these "photographer justifying their costs of business to amateur models" rants.

Like any profession you have the cost of doing business and the prices that you set. If someone can't afford your prices then you simply don't take them on as a client. If your work can't bring in clients at the price you feel is fair, the you should re-think you prices, approach to work, marketing to attract the clients that can pay, or find a new profession.

toddrew··on 9 yo girl RPG kickstarter update show she has no interest of making the game
Poor girl.
toddrew··on I pirated Game of Thrones season premiere
I pirated it as well. I could have watched it on tv, but I opted for my laptop. The content creators were paid long before I made that decision. They would not have received any more money had I turned on my tv or not.
toddrew··on FireMe - Who wants to get fired?
Really? I would.

If I was considering hiring someone, and checked out their social streams and saw a lot of negativity directed towards their boss and job, I would only assume that's what I would be getting as well. They would never get the job. Same goes for high amounts of general non-work-related negativity in their streams as well.

toddrew··on FireMe - Who wants to get fired?
Who would want to hire someone who makes negative public statements about their job?
toddrew··on Ask HN: Need advice about relocating to Chile/Latin America for tech startups
Your profile says to contact you via email but you don't have one listed. I've lived in Latin America for the past couple years and also plan to move to Chile this year. Let me know if you'd like to chat.
toddrew··on Why Are There So Few Female Magicians?
I grew up with a magician for a mother. We had pet rabbits instead of cats and dogs that she used for her shows.
toddrew··on Show HN: Increase your productivity with ambient noise
For me, I find long periods of time spent working in front of a screen can lead to anxiety. When I start getting distracted in many directions the feeling starts to come on. Listening to this ambient noise for the past half hour has calmed down that anxious feeling and made me feel more focused.

I am however used to spending lots of time working in public spaces in the past, and have spent the past six months in a more isolated work environment. (On an off the grid property 50m up the side of a volcano that you need to take a boat to access)

Maybe this is just putting me back in my comfort zone.

toddrew··on Letter from the grave (2009)
I'm sorry if you don't like the story. I didn't decide for it to be at the top. I considered it relevant to what happened today. Immediately after I posted I shared my own experience living in a community that was unsafe for journalists and brought up the suggestion that perhaps there should be more organizations like wikileaks that are set up to allow for anonymous reporting, not only for government whistle blowers, but for reporters that live in fear of putting their name to their work.
toddrew··on Letter from the grave (2009)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_journalists_killed_in_t...

During the time I lived in Mexico there were 10 journalists killed in the state of Veracruz where I lived. They were journalists that spoke out about government corruption or cartel violence.

During the same time the entire police force of Veracruz were fired in one day and the navy replaced them.

Currently there's blogo del narco, borderland beat and a few other places online to read uncensored stories, but almost all have the writer's name. Something like Wikileaks for safe, anonymous reporting would be great for these countries.

toddrew··on Ask HN: How can I make this page convert better?
I second the free trial with minimum functionality. Take a look at https://www.easel.io. It's somewhat similar (in browser design for bootstrap instead of blogs) and offers a limited trial of being able to create three different pages.

By offering the trial and shrinking the signup form to an email address and password you have less friction, your visitors playing around with it, and you have their email address.

toddrew··on Ask HN: How can I tell when someone read an email I sent them?
http://www.yesware.com/ is free to use and also works with the 1x1 image to track opens. You can also add trackable links.
toddrew··on Show HN: Swapidy: Trade up your old stuff for new stuff
I suggest you change your wording. Saying there's no such product makes me think I either entered in some wrong information and try again.. and again... or makes me think there's a mistake in your system.

Your best bet would be having an email opt-in pop up letting me know it's not currently a product you're buying but I can be notified when you are. (like you just did)

toddrew··on Show HN: Swapidy: Trade up your old stuff for new stuff
I went through the process of choosing my MBP to sell: Mid 2011, 8gb, 500gb, 2.7 GHz i7 and it told me that there's no such product.

What does 'there's no such product' mean? Should it say 'we're not currently buying that product'?

I'm typing on it right now so I can assure you that it does exists.

toddrew··on Adioso is reinventing travel search. Check these never-before-possible searches
I love this.

I'm currently searching for the cheapest way, I dont care how long it takes, to get from Guatemala City to as close as I can get to Santiago, Chile.

After a number of Adioso searches I found that it would be much cheaper for me to fly - Guatemala - Miami - Lima, saving me around $400 per person (flying with my gf).

A feature I would love would be a reverse search. Searching by destination with an open ended departure location. I'd love to put in Departure: North America Destination:Santiago, Chile and find the cheapest option.

toddrew··on Ask HN: Have You Ever Lived in the Third World?
I'm a Canadian who has spent the past two years living in Latin America. Most of it has been spent in Mexico and I'm currently in Guatemala.

I believe I have a higher quality of life here than in Canada. No, there's not the same health care or social programs (these are usually taken into account when determining quality of life) but those aren't things that I ever had to take advantage of in Canada.

My cost of living is much cheaper which means I can work less hours and spend more time doing the things that I enjoy.

I live 50 meters up a volcano and have an amazing view across the lake to two other volcanos. The property is 100% off the grid and I need to take a boat to get to a town to buy anything. Internet is from a 3g usb modem. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/799543

Nothing here comes instantly. Everything moves a bit slower. This has taught me to be more patient and make better use of my time.
