tocs3··on No More Drugstore Head Shots: Passport Applications Go Digital
“You’re not going any longer to some drugstore to get your picture taken behind a white screen,

I went to a drugstore to get my passport photo taken earlier this year. It was sort of a comedy of error. Still, I stood in front of the white screen (that at one point fell off the wall) and not behind it. Also, you have been able to take and print your own pictures for a while. They just need to meet the requirements. I thought about it but decided it would be to much trouble.

Interesting changes:

will feature a larger and “more gold” seal on the front cover

and

When the passport’s pages are flipped rapidly, the eagle will appear to flap its wings

I and going to try flipping the pages in my new passport just to see if there are enough of them for this sort of flip book.

Does anyone know how the Trump “patriot passports.” did this summer (I am sort of imagining they sold out)

tocs3··on Reanimated AI Greta Garbo stars again in a ball-bearing advert
This is both an AI story and a ball bearing story.
tocs3··on Hate Beets? Science May Have the Answer Why
I cannot speak to why beets might taste like dirt (never noticed myself) but while I like beets they turn everything on the plate purple (especially mashed potatoes). Purple is a fine color and purple beets look nice but purple potatoes not so much.
tocs3··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Do you have any recommendations for translations? I have been reading from some I just have laying around.

I have been wanting to read Donald Knuth's "3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated".

tocs3··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I do not know if this is related to this comments but if you are reading The London Review of Books so that you do not have to read the whole book, maybe it is. I do not watch movies much anymore. Sometime though I want to know what a movie is all about. So, I just read the wikipedia plot review on it. It saves me the time by not having to sit through much tedium but I get a scenes of what it is about.

I have been reading The Bible. It has been a long time project and I have a long ways to go. I am much more agnostic that a true believer but it has been interesting. Hearing popular views about it and Christianity vs. reading The Book is sort of like the difference between reading a novel and watching the based on movie.

tocs3··on EVs being trialled as giant batteries to power homes for less in Auckland
It looks like you might be.

From TFA:

That means households can charge their EV when power is cheap

If electricity is always the same price it would not make any sense unless:

That means households can charge their EV when power is cheap, and either use the stored energy themselves at peak times, or sell any surplus back when the price is high.

or maybe:

A charged EV with a two-way system could also help a household to get through power outages caused by storms or other severe weather.

I will also add that I have been thinking about getting an EV and installing solar panels. My power company does not buy back excess electricity (they give a rebate on the electricity I buy from them with any excess). It is a little of a special case as I only drive maybe 2 or 3 times in an average week. Having something that can serve as a charger for the car and also power the house at night might be nice.

tocs3··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
What sort of law suit rights can be sold? This is a new concept for me. If I was hit by a Mack truck could I sell my rights to sue. It would seem to be a different type of case or are they both sort of the some. Injured by a truck vs. injured by you not holding up your end of the bargin?
tocs3··on Bill Gates Says Trump Is Wrong to Hold Out Against AI Safeguards
My biggest worry about the US setting up some sort of safeguards is just that I do not trust anyone in a position to do so to do a good job. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
tocs3··on I Posed as a Problem Gambler. DraftKings Made Me a VIP
Freedom includes being free to self regulate and to make mistakes.

But freedom also includes recognizing problems and acting responsibly to minimize the adverse affects to society at large. The problem being pointed out here is that some may be placing obstacles in the paths of those who are having trouble self regulating.

tocs3··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
The article is not really anti hacker (IMHO) just lets not forget the here and now.
tocs3··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair

tocs3··on What happens when you analyze your favorite college football team like the CIA?
The kicker has a drug habit. The quarterback is making a suspicious number of overseas call. The coach is having an extramarital affair that could be exploited by a blackmailer.
tocs3··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
I agree that the concept product space is exciting and important. It is good to see people and companies explore these spaces and ideas. Sure lets build and play with these things.

The criticism that is levied on these things is not that they exist but that despite the glitz and shine they are not going to help today. 20 years is a long time to wait for your fancy mobility device.

I have seen countless concepts that never see in the real world. 100 mpg cars, stair climbing wheel chairs, exoskeletons etc. I am watching for thing that I can afford and use now.

tocs3··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
It is also missing a foot rest.

There is often a great big gap between what is available (meets basic requirements) and what is possible (crabchair). It is the space that is to boring for large companies to bother with.

edit: It does have a foot rest. I did not see it on this page but it is shown on the designboom link in the article. https://www.designboom.com/technology/autonomous-wheelchair-...

tocs3··on Vertical Farming: Reimagining Agriculture in an Urban Age
Vertical farming articles are so often disappointing to me. They so often look like some one is trying to make a billion dollars.

It seems something like vertical gardening (a phrase I just made up) would be better. Something that is not trying to be then end all be all solution. Just a way to supplement peoples fresh food needs. Something like a few shelves outside a house with a small yard or the side of an apartment building sounds a little more practical. Some technology would probably be helpful (especially watering the plants). It could use natural sunlight and provide some shade for the building behind it. Make it into a greenhouse in the winter and it might even provide some heat. It might be something that many people could enjoy.

tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
I said it above but I will say it again, if your fridge has a door open sensor it should have a close the door function. This is especially true if you spent $11k on it.
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
Someone that wants to make sure you regularly do software updates.
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
How quaint, a paper contract that needed an actual written signature.
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
There is already a door switch in all the refrigerators I have used. It controls the light (at least I think it does, I have never seen the light go off:)
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
If there is a door open sensor there should be a close door function.
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
Me, in the US, tried to buy a non smart oven a couple years ago. I could not find one (that fit the space the old oven was in). I also did not see any with knobs that I could turn for less than $10k. They all had the plastic covered membrane buttons.
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
I live with an elderly person (as a caretaker) and find that elderly persons are not always good sources of information about needs. It could be that I am completely wrong about the usefulness of a connected refrigerator (I just look in out 1980's era fridge).
tocs3··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
I do not disagree with your sentiment. We have had refrigerators for 100+ years [citation needed] after all. Still there are likely cases where it is useful. Looking in on elderly family members might include picking up things from the grocery store and having a list of staples needed might be an example. There are plenty of ways to deal with this but one might be a connected refrigerator.
tocs3··on Second Circuit allows government to search electronic devices at the border
People did not think this policy through fully.

It seams more likely that it was thought through and officials just don't care.

tocs3··on Second Circuit allows government to search electronic devices at the border
I think it is important because the case was not about guilt or innocence. It was about the governments right to search without any cause. If the case was about whether there was enough cause for the search we would be having a much different discussion here.

I should probably have said this in my original comment.

tocs3··on Second Circuit allows government to search electronic devices at the border
Near the top of the article:

“Today’s decision leaves Americans’ most sensitive information open to search at the border without any suspicion at all,”

I think this is just an extension of a general we, as government officials protecting American freedoms, can do what we want and will justify it later if we have to policy.

It should probably be noted that this specific case led to a conviction of an actual crime (Bank fraud and money laundering).

tocs3··on In Montana, a revolt against corporate money could reshape political spending
What are the things that campaigns spend money on that really makes a difference in outcomes. Is it plastic signs in peoples yards, advertising, paying for news stories. I have a hard time believing voters hear candidate X raised more money and then they vote for candidate X. Still, I also know that raising more money is a good indicator of who will win. Why?
tocs3··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
There is a cap to how much and insurance company can make (health insurance for instance are capped at 20% of premiums). To make more money next year they can sign up more policy holders or make sure costs go up. Companies also often have a large stake in the fix it shops/clinics/hospitals so they recoup much of their cost that way. Market capture, if it cost more to buy insurance than to fix it/absorb the cost without insurance why would you buy insurance. It is useful for the insurance companies to see costs increase.

Sure there can be good arguments for having insurance. Insurance companies are part of the financial sector and will be working to make more money. That is a fine incentive for the insurance industry but for the insurance consumer it is a reason to be skeptical and careful.

tocs3··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
Sure there are valid uses for insurance. It is just the incentives are all wrong for the insurance companies.
