You don‘t need your own AWS account to use Lambda functions.
I compiled a landing page example with Mailchimp mailing list signup a while ago:
In Germany, the education system from kindergarten to university is basically free (although schools could be much better funded), you have a public health care system that (mostly) works, public transportation, a welfare system that makes sure that everyone can at least survive, etc. etc....
I spend some time in SF, and even with a much higher income and potentially lower taxes, I'd never be able to afford the same quality of living there, especially if you have kids.
I rather think that trade unions, as well as crude structures like the "IHKs" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_German_Chambers...) play a much bigger role in keeping things as they are, and general risk-avoiding tendencies in higher management levels.

I was possible to use the v1.0 API until Q2/2015 if I remember correctly (only if you had a v1.0 app though)
Motivation for this was that I prefer not to install special tools/modules on my machine if there’s a service which can to the same without huge convenience barriers. I guess it’s just a matter of personal flavor.
Having swap space will not help as far as I know, because Mesos will not consider it as "available memory".
I'm especially interested in DC/OS, because my company is building a SaaS in it, and ideally we'd want a general solution on how to ship and maintain an on-premise deployment.
After having a look at the installation shell script, Replicated itself seems to run in containers and therefore should be deployable on DC/OS or the likes if I understand correctly...
This would have implications on the relationship to the full-time employer, and also from a tax perspective (which is quite a hassle here in Germany, IMHO...).
Maybe it would make sense to open up the application for everybody, but to connect the grants to the self-employment status (i.e. the applicant get some timeframe to register the self-employment and if necessary talk to the employer).
I just think the rules lead to a strong restriction of the applicant pool and also the possible grant-worthy projects. But this might be intended...
In fact, if you have a full-time employer, this employer will in most work contracts reserve the "right" to your full work capacity, and will insist on a sign-off for other jobs besides the "full-time" one.
