to··on "Code was never the hard part" is an insult to all programmers
do you know how many eBay clones were out there after Ricardo? how many people built twitter clones? building the website was never the hard part, making people get to it and use it was always the costly and hard part. nobody talks about embedded device programming when they say code was never the hard part.
to··on Ratchet - WebSockets for PHP
Nice! PHP finally getting async ... about time. Seems to work pretty good. Just benchmarked react with c50/10000 and get 700 req/sec on dynamic content on a shitty macbook air.

Will try to have it run with node.js's forever daemon next.

go to google, search for "piece sign" on image search. click on the ~20 image, black very slim lines white background next to piece sign with globe in background and alien head like looking piece sign. host is decinet.com or something. (im on my phone right now)

to··on Poll: Have you ever applied for YC funding?
can anyone explain how that works anyway?
to··on How Much Does a Single Search Cost Google?
i think the issue here is that a search is one service payed by another (adwords) and so on. for the cost of a search you have to devide all employees into their group and take out only the cost for searches. but than comes adwords and pay for it... tough the adwords code probably runs on the same servers that deliver searches (unified system)... i guess its really hard to cslculate but i would guess a search is only a fraction of a cent even before balancing it out win profits.
to··on How they used to sell computers: Oldest computer ads:
for xmas 1989 i got a C64. my uncle, big show off, got my cousins (two girls) an amiga. why? cause it cost a bit more. turns out amiga sucked and my C64 was pretty much awesome until i got a 286 a bit later. i even remember begging for 4MB more RAM so i can play rise of the triad ... anyway, thinking back it kinda feels like the C64 was a more open platform and everyone else was pretty much fucked.
to··on Why American Mothers are Superior

to··on Mac App Store hits one million downloads on day one

to··on Ask HN: I built a site that just went ridiculously viral. What do I do now?
minimize the server work; get some cheap nodes at rackspace cloud; use one node for sessions in memcache; use two nodes for mongodb (master/slave) read from both; try to minimize xss/html/js and gzip everything; cache as much as possible; maybe even queue inserts/updates with redis and a cron;

thats how i survived a mini fb app thatwent from zero to 44 million users in 7 days... rackspace cloud + memcache + redis insert&update queue + round robin. after a month i even killed the rackspace cloud interface and api with over 80 nodes and growing. had to get the memory limit on my account raised twice. peak were around 40k req/sec. after the second month we moved it to four bulky servers (16 core, raid5, 32gb ram) each cost around 12k dollar.

the whole secret is caching. everything, everywhere and as much as possible.

to··on Startup Logos from 2010

to··on Mark Zuckerberg Named TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year
thats it. the time is dead to me. i can take amazon, paypal etc. because those are companies and heck they can kick whoever they want, its their business. but when a magazine ignores its readers votes... well i guess the time just adjusted to its country. democracy adieau, long live the republic.
to··on Ask HN: Favorite payment processor?
look at your passport. it says european union on it for a reason.
to··on Ask HN: Favorite payment processor?
i always liked moneybookers. sadly nobody uses them. why? - more countries - better support - account and linked bank accounts are not chained to your location (im german living in america with an austrian bank account: paypal fail - german adress with austrian bank not possible same with us address. its the god damn EU i can open accounts where ever i want as citizen of the EU) - higher limits - way less bullshit
to··on SimpleCDN has been effectively kicked off the Internet by its ISPs w/o warning

to··on CR-48 Tracker
i dont need a tracker to know that i will not recieve one... :/
to··on European companies that moved from Europe to the US
europe is terrible for startups. too many regulations, too much bs too focus on work and the biggest issue is tgat most startups stay in their country and never cross any borders. and as it says in the article it's basically impossible to find investors because the mentality is not ready for risks blocking any chance for growth.
to··on HTML5 & CSS3 browser compatibility charts
only thing that comes to my mind - also the same reason i will ignore html5 and css3 for the next 2-3 years: the microsoft IE team are a bunch of losers who screwed everyone over since 10 years and it doesnt stop.
