tmjwid··on Introducing Toast 1
I definately got "Unauthorised bread" [1] vibes from the name when I first saw the thread.

tmjwid··on I turned my RSS feeds into an e-ink newspaper to stop reading on my phone
I'll throw my 2 cents into the mix of "what works for me" posts. FreshRSS (share to Wallabag enabled) + Wallabag + KOReader (on kobo). I've been toying with the idea of trying to add Wallabag sync into Crosspoint, as I have an x4 but it's pretty much just sat doing nothing.

I have a Mudita Kompact though, which I use with the Wallabag app and my best mate Alan from RHVoice to read out articles for me. I remember barely anything with this setup but I do like it...

tmjwid··on EU Parliamentary Research Service calls VPNs "a loophole that needs closing"
As a kid, you never found a stack of porno magazines in the woods did you?
tmjwid··on Apple update looks like Czech mate for locked-out iPhone user
For the same reason, plugging in an external keyboard is also a no-go since freshly updated iPhones are placed in what's known as a Before First Unlock state, which prevents wired accessories from working until the passcode is entered.

Makes sense why he didn't do this.

tmjwid··on Don’t Look Up: Sensitive internal links in the clear on GEO satellites [pdf]
Yeah POCSAG is not encrypted here in the UK. You can still see all the emergency information from around the country unencrypted in realtime. They even broadcast the details of the emergency and a lot of times it's not nice. You do/did get some bird watching sightings though!
tmjwid··on Thingino: Open-Source Firmware for IP Cameras
I just installed this on my Wyse cam 2 after using the defang hacks for years. This works all the same but it is much better. Having working night vision where it isn't just randomly enabling the IR filter is great.

Upgrade from dafang was easy if you follow the guide on the github wiki. Getting RTSP working was strange as it wouldn't work over IP but did over local DNS entry, but that's the only issue I've found so far.

tmjwid··on Sega mistakenly reveals sales numbers of popular games
It's always on GamePass as well, I'm not sure if this counts as a sale in these figures. Although I don't think Infinite Wealth was though so not sure.
tmjwid··on Cory Doctorow on how we lost the internet
For further listening, Cory has produced a podcast for CBC that might be a good accompaniment to this article called "Understood: Who Broke the Internet?".
tmjwid··on Apple Pulls Encrypted iCloud Security Feature in UK
Yeah my bad.
tmjwid··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
I can't imagine many here (UK) will really care, we've had multiple breeches of privacy imposed on us by the powers that be. - Removed incorrect assumption of this not being reported.
tmjwid··on The GTA III port for the Dreamcast has been released
It's an engine port from the decompilation project RE3. A lot to changes to get it to run
tmjwid··on The paper passport's days are numbered
My Eink phone can do this (Hisense model), but the sacrifice of using one might be too big just for an on-demand QR code.
tmjwid··on Raspberry Pi announces branded range of NVMe SSDs and SSD kit
I use a HP T640 currently as my main "home lab" server and I'm planning on relocating the old Dell/Wyse Zx0Q to my mums as a backup server.

I run about 20 different containers at the moment and run TVheadend bare metal with 3 DVB-T2 tuners.

Both machine used USB3 - Sata enclosures for extra storage. Work greats. The old Dell machine even did transcoding in JellyFin for 1080p content, which was not expected given how crap the cpu is in it. Everything ran fast and stable.

Check out Parky Towers for in-depth info on many different thin clients.

tmjwid··on Building static binaries with Go on Linux
Jellyfin is one of the bigger ones for sure.
tmjwid··on PS-HTTPD: A web server written in PostScript (2010)
Same here, I think it's a sign...
tmjwid··on A personal music streaming server that works
Qobuz sells popular music in 24bit flac. Bleep and Boomkat sell more obscure stuff.

Your best bet is thrift/charity stores and ripping CDs. Super cheap and plentiful and albums are still put out on CDs.

tmjwid··on It's getting harder to die
When my dad died last year from aggressive relapse of cancer, his death rattle was so intense my mum couldn't deal with it and had to leave the room when it was happening, it's a disturbing experience. She's still traumatised by it today.
tmjwid··on Show HN: I made an open source and local translation app
If I was to guess, it might be RHVoice from FDroid as they are using a custom rom.
tmjwid··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
The HiSense A5, A7 and A9 range of phones could be your answer. Problem is it is a Chinese domestic market phone. A9 does have a GSI of LineageOS with working EINK refresh modes available on XDA so this could be your ticket if the 4G bands are available in your country (basically not the US).

I have an A5 Pro and it works great.

tmjwid··on Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
Luckily, cash is still a majorly accepted payment method over here from my experience. I did my weeks food and charity shop shopping all with cash on the weekend. Markets are still very accepting of cash as an example. We have options still but for how long, I'm not too sure but hopefully indefinitely.
tmjwid··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
No you are right, but my point was that it was an unnecessary observation in my opinion. Pointing out our choice on EU membership brought zero additional discussion to the points they made. Just like our little conversation now :)
tmjwid··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
I wrote to my MP about this and got a response.

They agreed with me that it is "important to protect users' freedom of expression and personal privacy".

They "do not believe it is right for encrypted messages to become decrypted. There must be a balance between our fundamental right to privacy and keeping people safe online, which raises difficult questions for platforms such as WhatsApp".

But they "do not believe that the legislation impacting private messaging will damage this encryption, as a variety of technologies are emerging that could allow for scanning on issues such as child sexual abuse material while retaining the privacy benefits afforded by end-to-end encryption".

They do note however that having Ofcom be the regulator and monitor isn't right, which seems to have been a bit under reported to my knowledge.

Funnily enough, they did not vote on this matter and I shall be finding out why.

tmjwid··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
Mustn't grumble is in my opinion our national motto. We do have dissidence, but is met with contempt and apathy. Look at the national outrage over just stop oil stopping some cars on the a motorway. The rage was baffling, mass psychosis just took over the nation.
tmjwid··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
Maybe not, but lets not split hairs here. The op was discussing comparing nations and used a blanket "EU" moniker to denote this. You know, our next door neighbours of similar economic size...
tmjwid··on Pentax 645 [pdf]
My wallet has never been so happy (and sad at the same time)! My C220 is getting some new gear.
tmjwid··on The tragic birth of FM radio (2006)
" to free up their spectrum for... what exactly?"

Whatever/whoever comes with the most amount of £££. Same old, same old.

tmjwid··on Cameras on phones? (2001) [video]
I'd say her reaction was pretty negative than charming. Her only example of its use is paparazzi which says it all really. It seemed to me she was mortified at the idea and I can understand why.
tmjwid··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
This is the way you are meant to hold a phone anyway. In the manuals it states this (e.g apple says 5mm-15mm from your head). This is to reduce SAR.
tmjwid··on YouTube May Force You to Watch 10 (Or More) Unskippable Ads in a Row
Wasn't Vanced a modified version of the official YouTube app ? I think that's why it was nuked. Newpipe is just an extractor is has no copyrighted code in it from Google.
tmjwid··on U.K.'s online censorship bill causes more harm than it attempts to prevent
I keep seeing these Censorship laws all the time but something always gets in the way of it being put into law or practice. Is there anything different this time or is it another terrible attempt by our government to look like they're doing something instead of eating Michelin Star quality food for under £15 a meal subsidised by good people of this country?
