tmellon2··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
We can simply get rid of most oil - Just ONE square mile of batteries and a TOTAL of 100 x 100 square miles of Solar can power the entire USA 24/7.

It is because of world wide adoption of EVs that the fossil fuel demand has reduced and stabilized gas prices in the US.

tmellon2··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
You have a point. However, the requirement estimate of 45000 acres is off by 10 times ! I have seen some of these tanks - even accounting for spacing between them; at best one needs maybe a total of 5000 acres.

BTW - If everyone followed Elon Musk's projection of 100 x 100 miles of Solar; then the US would not need these fossil fuels. See : https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/1vq0uu6/solar_i...

tmellon2··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Hmm...The Math does not hold up. 300 feet diameter circular area is 1.62 acres. So at max you would need about 1130 x 2 = 2260 acres and not 45000 acres as projected !

From the post :

"300 feet in diameter..."

"To hold 714 million barrels of oil (the full capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve), you’d need about 1,130 of these tanks. If you use the standard capacity of the largest commercial petroleum farms (e.g., in Cushing, Oklahoma), you need about 45,000 acres to store these tanks."

tmellon2··on Canada plans 'nuclear renaissance' with up to 10 reactors built by 2040
Totally unnecessary : I did the Math to cross-verify - Elon Musk is 100 % right !

Just ONE square mile of batteries and a TOTAL of 100 x 100 square miles of Solar can power the entire USA 24/7. Area required will be much lesser for Canada.

tmellon2··on BYD files 52 patents every single day. 700 km charge in 9 min. Available Today [video]
Oil is totally cooked. Bloomberg reports an automobile that Fast charges 700 km in 9 minutes flat that is available today. One can imagine that charging can be done during the day from excess Solar. As Elon Musk puts it - just a total of 100 x 100 Miles of Solar can supply the entire USA. Watch : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgCYYrhL-kE

tmellon2··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
Thank you. I was not aware of prior references especially that it could be done with 10K square miles, until media reports of Elon's speech at Davos recently.
tmellon2··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
Elon Musk mentioned that just a 100 square mile grid of Solar can power the entire USA. I did not believe it; a simple calculation later, I was convinced. The USA of yesteryear would have done this already and more. Sure other sources are required, but honestly we humans have to advance beyond burning dead things for fuel.
tmellon2··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
The De Minimis loophole is highly significant with FOUR Million packages per day (What ???). The clause to address this loophole needs to be stated more accurately - It should be clearly defined to be higher or lower of 30 % of the value of shipment under $800 OR $25 per shipment and not either. If either then the De Minimis loophole will be continue to be used at $25 per shipment. Source : https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/04/fact-sheet-pr...

1) EVs are not significantly heavier https://thedriven.io/2024/05/03/are-evs-really-much-heavier-...

2) One must also factor in the vast surface fleet that moves Gas and crude oil around : https://www.americangeosciences.org/geoscience-currents/tran...

3) Tyre manufacturers have taken notice and are working on this problem.

tmellon2··on Hyundai Has Best Month Ever in U.S. Electric SUV Sales Suddenly Double
Not necessarily in this scenario - if net manufacturing and battery costs were to fall - given the IC engine requires so many parts. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-28/china-s-e...

tmellon2··on CATL launches new EV battery with close to a 1M mile, 15-year lifespan
Incredible. If all governments are serious about global warming, they would move all public transport buses to this battery (and hook it up to Solar farms directly, when parked in terminals between break shifts). Public transport buses are the ones that would clock 1.5 million kms. (200 km / day x 300 days = 60,000 kms per year, considering 2 month downtime per bus). One can quickly wean off caveman oil.
tmellon2··on The Canadian government's plan to plant two billion trees
If planting two billion trees has so many challenges in a sparsely populated country (considering Canada's land area) - how is the One Trillion trees project supported by the likes of Marc Benioff (Salesforce) even possible ? For the record : I'm all for more greenery and forests.

Data would not get automatically contributed to research unless you explicitly gave informed consent for research studies. All researchers now require to maintain official records of informed consent given by patients or research participants. You could anonymize your data via DICOM anonymizer tools and offer them to UCSF or Memorial Sloan Kettering [or] you could host them on a website and offer to sign informed consent documents for researchers.
tmellon2··on Germany's Dream of 15M Electric Vehicles Is Fading Away
So be it, if Germans want to continue to be dependent on dictators and kings for their energy.
tmellon2··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
If people can connect small scale renewable power grids (think solar powered grids of a few acres) present alongside highways to charging facilities the revolution would truly happen especially in sunny places (think Texas, Africa, South Asia etc.) !
tmellon2··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
You could request your city council to attach a magnet to the ends of their sweep trucks. This would remove all nails and sharp ferromagnetic debris from the bike paths at no additional cost. They do this in certain countries to avoid flats in public buses.

Question : Are there any technical challenges in building 100 acre x 300 feet deep concrete storage tanks to store the water run-off ?
tmellon2··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
Generally speaking the average annual wage of corporate workers (mostly engineers) will be in the six figures. Hourly wage workers take home (on average) median US annual wages. So laying of 10000 engineers (in terms of immediate $ costs) is the equivalent of laying of approximately 30000 to 50000 hourly wage workers.
tmellon2··on Will Twitter outlast this lettuce?
Does someone have a better sense of economics of charging $8/Month ?

At best assuming approximately the 420,000 [see Ref.1] folks currently on twitter will pay $8/Month - which gives about $40 Million in annual revenue.

Will the economics work if the advertisers stay out ?

Also, why charge $8 in the first place if the number is too low ( < $40 Million), given as Mr.Musk puts it, twitter is losing $4 Million a day !
