tkmcc··on Facebook Launches Messenger for Web Browsers
I've seen some recent polls where most responses said that Facebook Messenger was their preferred method of communication. Given that the poll was on Facebook, I still think it's reflective of many of my peer's (people raised with the internet) opinions. It's less of a context switch than going to email or some other method of communication. As Messenger's trajectory increases (see also: their features in response to Chinese messaging apps), it becomes more and more apparent why Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp was a great idea.

This standalone Messenger app also widens business opportunities. A few days ago I was looking at suits on Bonobos and had a question about their construction that wasn't answered on the product page. I didn't immediately see a live chat link and I didn't feel like writing an email on a Sunday, so I messaged their Facebook page my question. They got back to me with a lengthy response in less than an hour. An interface like messenger.com makes it even easier to have asynchronous, almost-live customer service via Facebook messenger. It certainly made an impression on me.

Anyways, this is cool. Facebook's brightest days are still ahead of them.

tkmcc··on How I doubled my Internet speed with OpenWRT
Do xfinitywifi hotspots permanently authenticate clients based only on their MAC addresses? A malicious client could easily find the MAC address of any device connected to a xfinitywifi hotspot (by using e.g. airodump-ng [0]) and then spoof that device's MAC address on their own computer to access the internet via the hotspot without any authentication.

tkmcc··on Azure Search Is Now Generally Available
Can you index your own data with the Bing search API? This looks like it lets you run the same software that runs Bing with your own data as opposed to only what Bing has crawled. From the link:

> You can now more easily load data from Azure DocumentDB, SQL Server running in Azure VMs, and Azure SQL Database to Azure Search using new indexers. The indexer infrastructure provides a no-code solution that allows you to point Azure Search to your data store where it will ingest data as well as data changes on a scheduled basis.

tkmcc··on Damm algorithm
Pretty much.

First there's the Luhn algorithm, which "will detect any single-digit error, as well as almost all transpositions of adjacent digits. It will not, however, detect transposition of the two-digit sequence 09 to 90 (or vice versa). It will detect 7 of the 10 possible twin errors (it will not detect 22 ↔ 55, 33 ↔ 66 or 44 ↔ 77)." [0]

Then came the Verhoeff algorithm, which "was the first decimal check digit algorithm which detects all single-digit errors, and all transposition errors involving two adjacent digits, which was at the time thought impossible with such a code." [1]

The Damm algorithm was developed in 2004 and was a further improvement:

> The Damm algorithm is similar to the Verhoeff algorithm. It too will detect all occurrences of the two most frequently appearing types of transcription errors,[1] namely altering one single digit, and transposing two adjacent digits (including the transposition of the trailing check digit itself and the digit preceding it). But the Damm algorithm has the benefit that it makes do without the dedicatedly constructed permutations and its position specific powers being inherent in the Verhoeff scheme. Furthermore, a table of inverses can be dispensed with provided all main diagonal entries of the operation table are zero.

> The Damm algorithm does not suffer from exceeding the number of 10 possible values, resulting in the need for using a non-digit character (as the X in the 10-digit ISBN check digit scheme).

> Prepending leading zeros does not affect the check digit.

> There are totally anti-symmetric quasigroups that detect all phonetic errors associated with the English language (13 ↔ 30, 14 ↔ 40, ..., 19 ↔ 90). The table used in the illustrating example is based on an instance of such kind.

> Despite its desirable properties in typical contexts where similar algorithms are used, the Damm algorithm is largely unknown and scarcely used in practice.

That last point is also why I submitted this :)

tkmcc··on YouTube Introduces a Paid Service Called Music Key
> As part of the introduction of Music Key, YouTube’s music catalog is getting a makeover for all users, paying or not. The site will now offer complete albums, adding static video files with high-quality audio where no official videos are available.

This is great news for for the huge audience that builds massive music playlists on YouTube and uses them as their primary music consumption mechanism.

> For paying subscribers, YouTube will add two features that will be especially attractive to users on mobile devices: the ability to play songs in the background while using other apps and to save songs for offline listening.

Really? Both of these features are implemented in plenty of third-party apps. I guess it makes more sense to view the service as a Google Play Music subscription with some added goodies, but still...

tkmcc··on Stuxnet: Zero Victims

Unlikely to be a server given that OS version number on the "KASPERSKY ISIE" line is 5.1, which corresponds to that of Windows XP [+].

> KALASERVER, ANTIVIRUSPC, NAMADSERVER: judging by the names, there were at least two servers involved in this case too.

..also judging by the "5.2" on each line, which corresponds to the OS version of Windows Server 2003 (including R2). "5.2" also could indicate Windows XP 64-bit Edition, but that seems much less likely to be the case.

tkmcc··on The Darkhotel APT
Interesting bits from the Technical Appendix:

- If the Information Stealer detects that the current system default codepage is 0412 (Korean) it terminates.

- Also regarding the Information Stealer: "If the server reply contains a keyword «minmei» it continues sending additional information. «Minmei» may be a reference to a popular Japanese anime and manga known as «The Super Dimension Fortress Macross»."

- The Enhanced Keylogger's debug info path was left compiled into the binary: "d:\KerKey\KerKey(일반)\KerKey\release\KerKey.pdb" (note 일반 means "General" in Korean).

I'm unsure whether this is intentional misdirection or simply due to bad OPSEC, but this kind of stuff sticks out because it indicates a fairly large-scale and international APT campaign may be coming out of somewhere in Asia besides China.
