tkjef··on Blog about what you've struggled with
But what if i struggle to blog about what i struggle with? ;)

It is a good plan. Quite often, i'll come across something that wasn't quite documented or posted about yet and it truly is a golden opportunity to blog about something unique that is useful, as well as actually help others that come across the same issue.

tkjef··on Ask HN: What's the best piece of software you use every day?
to get line numbers:

:set nu

to remove line numbers:

:set nonu

the line numbers aren't added to the file. they're just shown on the vi editor.

and if you like vim & git i highly recommend: vim-gitgutter

tkjef··on Ask HN: Best new startup TLD, other than .com?
my list goes from best to worst:

.com

.io

.fyi

.co

.net

.xyz i have not seen anything noteworthy on other than personal sites.

i feel like .fyi is going to blow up in the next 10 years. there are TONS of good .fyi domains available and they are typically arount $8 to register as opposed to the $34 .io domains.

tkjef··on Show HN: Browse recently expired, pronounceable domain names (Part II)
I have sem.fyi available and several other nice 2-3 letter .fyi domains at https://rad.fyi
tkjef··on Ask HN: Which books have you read more than once?
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

Read it every year from 3rd grade to 8th.

tkjef··on Ask HN: What are some open source alternative to Zoom
posted this on another thread as well, looked at Jitsi and someone from our security team pointed out this open authentication issue: https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/issues/5720

best alternative i've seen so far was a webrtc setup with okta authentication. https://github.com/rdegges/chatapp

tkjef··on Want to Ditch Zoom? Jitsi Offers an Open-Source Alternative
looked at Jitsi and someone from our security team pointed out this authentication issue: https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/issues/5720

tkjef··on People Who Are Obsessed with Success and Prestige
i found the 1st chapter to be a bit of a slog as you say, but after that it picked up for me. and there were hints of what was to come in the 1st chapter.

but 100%, it was a little challenging to get into initially.

i also took breaks reading it as i read other books. it can definitely be digested piecemeal as it's a collection of thoughts.

tkjef··on People Who Are Obsessed with Success and Prestige
one of many great lessons in that book. happy to have finally read it after it came up on here a few times.
tkjef··on Find Yourself a Hobby for 2020
a juggling illusion i learned is juggling 4 balls is really just juggling 2 in each hand.

you can also juggle bouncing off the floor, lighter objects (scarves, tissues), various patterns (above instead of under, 1 up 2 up) and if really adventurous try while unicycling!

tkjef··on Silicon Valley Finale Explained
lol, now is 3 dots funny? or is it 4?
tkjef··on AltStore: Alternative iOS app store that doesn't require a jailbreak
it's chess. apple's move. interesting to watch. hats off to the dev for playing the game. rooting for ya!
tkjef··on New games for the Atari Lynx
the Game Gear was awesome! obsessed over the writeup for that in Consumer Reports for Kids until i could save up for one.
tkjef··on Removing One Maine Dam 20 Years Ago Changed Everything
agreed. you have to be very careful taking out your hook.
tkjef··on Removing One Maine Dam 20 Years Ago Changed Everything
trout is my favorite fish to watch & to eat. i've also thrown back quite a few.

fun fact: in a pinch if all you have is a little bit of pringles shake them up into little crumbs, prepare the fish, sprinkle the pringles crumbles inside the fish, cook wrapped in tin foil near a fire's embers and you have some good eating with a bit of seasoning.

tkjef··on Fewer Than Half of Google Searches Now Result in a Click
check out the mortgage calculator i made: https://www.mortgagecalculator.io/

no dark patterns, loads quickly, uses fathom for analytics so no tracking. There are affiliate links to LendingTree, but they're just text links and i tried to be non-obtrusive to the ux.

also, have an android app that just hit 5,000 installs since being launched in mid-April: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.mortgagecal...

currently ranking #3 for 'mortgage calculator' on google play. pretty proud of that! beating out Zillow and Quicken's mortgage calculators.

tkjef··on Ask HN: What are some terminal tricks you wish you knew sooner?
use less for safe read-only mode and to utilize vim commands still

esc-b to jump back a word on the terminal

esc-f to jump forward a word on the terminal

nerdcommenter (my favorite vim plugin)

git-gutter (my 2nd favorite vim plugin)

!-2 (repeats 2nd to last command)

practice! https://www.shortcutfoo.com/app/dojos/vim

tkjef··on Ask HN: Book Recommendation for DevOps?
no, definitely not. but it's an enjoyable fictional read that has lots of devops concepts but isn't a flat out tech book. i found that to be a nice change of pace from the non-stop barrage of tech articles, tutorials, and straight to the point o'reilly books i'm typically reading.

it also highlights real world examples that i could definitely relate to and thought that i was alone in going through. clearly i'm not alone on it if there's this book written with people going through similar frustrating experiences.

tkjef··on Dear Google, I'm Blocking You from My Website
i use "search for it".

i've completely removed said word from my vocabulary. it can be done. break yo' mind free!

tkjef··on Privacy-friendly alternatives to Google
For anyone looking for more info on the Brave browser i did a quick writeup about it: https://www.tkjef.com/blog/what-is-brave-browser/

Was a diehard Vivaldi user, but Brave's performance has won me over.

tkjef··on Host Your Own Blog with Gitlab and Netlify
just started using netlify after making my own tool that did something similar and being a holdout for awhile. it was a smooth experience and i am now a happy user. put up a mortgage calculator app: https://www.mortgagecalculator.io/
tkjef··on Netlify Dev
for Amazon S3 i setup the s3, cloudfront & cert manually (should put it in terraform, but it takes just a second). here's a nice article to walk you through that (says it's for hugo, but you could use it for any ssg): https://agop.me/post/https-enabled-portfolio-hugo-s3-cloudfr...

then i build and deploy with a bash tool i made called NanoCD: https://github.com/tkjef/NanoCD

has lots of helpful options. easy to wrap your head around. easy to add whatever workflows, tests you'd like.

tkjef··on Show HN: A rap song about the struggles of finishing a side project
diggin' Prod Bugs. definitely could relate. Opinions is pretty good as well.
tkjef··on Tracking my phone's silent connections
also using OsmAnd but just on android with Tor & NoRoot Firewall. takes a second to load the route. but allows you to download the maps and use offline. always have Play Store disabled unless there's an app i have to download briefly. once done, i uninstall the app and disable the Play Store.
tkjef··on Oh God, It's Raining Newsletters
https://www.4-9s.com for containers, ci/cd, ha, iac + testing
tkjef··on How to teach Git
here's my git log alias: alias gl='git log --date=local --pretty=format:"%C(124)%ad %C(24)%h %C(34)%an %C(252)%s%C(178)%d" --stat -p'

has nice color coding around the date, person committing, commit hash, and message.

tkjef··on Generate your document site in 3 seconds
I'm making a project similar to this called NanoCD: https://github.com/tkjef/nanocd

except can be used with any SSG or plain static sites on S3, GCS or Spaces (from digitalocean).

The dependencies are noted clearly in the README. ;)

tkjef··on Tales of an Aging Gamer: We keep getting older, the games stay the same
i've been playing Rocket League. that has kept my interest, is skills-based, takes time to learn, and has a sports-like element to it that is pleasant. for anyone that doesn't know you drive a car around on a soccer field and play soccer (or hockey or basketball). and you can fly through the air with boosts that can get very complex.
tkjef··on Two Years, Four Nanodegree Programs, and a New Career
highly agree books are where it's at for some in depth knowledge.

after that, you have better honed long tail search queries for online.

tkjef··on Two Years, Four Nanodegree Programs, and a New Career
search each chapter title. no need to give free promo to a major ad company.

the less we use this as a verb, the less the next generation will use it.

and cheers on your nanodegree. i've finished 2 myself.
