tkinom··on Show HN: SQLite query inside a Bash function
Personally, I like to see sqlite builds into the bash.

For features such as:

Continuous logging the bash commands, env, results, exec time in a sqlite database for security/auditing and regression testing.

The db file can be kept opened, no need to spawn a separate process for each command logged.
Anyone else interests in such approach. Anyone thinks of any potential issue for such integration?

If there are enough interests, I can start a open source project for this.

Standing desk from Costco is best purchase I made for WFH.
tkinom··on U.S. to give ransomware hacks similar priority as terrorism, official says
Follow the $$$.

If US government authorizes the NSA/CIA to infiltrate/attack all bitcoin exchanges that accept payments from wallet ID with ransomware, the problem likely be solved very quickly.

tkinom··on NFT sales plummet nearly 90% from their peak as collectibles market cools
Just for thought exercise:

If github wants to add NFT to support its users to monetize the users generated contents, how would github do that?

Or how might a special NFT/PDF reader sw enables the PDF creators to monetized their creations?

tkinom··on How I learned to stop worrying and love the lab-leak theory
https://youtu.be/bpQFCcSI0pU?t=255

Early last year (2020), whole Chinese internet social media was looking for "黄燕玲" - a missing researcher in Wuhan lab. She disappeared around Oct/Nov 2019. Chinese social media suspected she was patient-0. The messages showed up multiple times in my wechat feeds for couple days. They all got taken down a few days later.

Government officials still claimed she was alive but was not able to produce any proof.

If WHO really want to investigate, they just need ask :

If "黄燕玲" worked for Wuhan lab? Where is she now? Where is her families, friends, co-workers? Can we talk to any of them?

tkinom··on Branchless Coding in Go
Does go support "__builtin_expect" similar to gcc?

I optimized tight loop of network packets forwarding code with "__builtin_expect" and "inline" to get rid of at most all the branch delays and able to get > 10X increase in performance.

Wonder if same method can be used with "go"....

https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/ podcast #70 is a very good story on how someone use the prepaid cash on the dark side.

All other stories on that podcast list are very interesting.

tkinom··on What is the hardest language in the world to lip-read? (2020)
Any AI that does lip-read?

In theory, any youtube videos with close caption can be training materials, right?

Once it trained, it would be fun to lip-read the politicians.

Can't wait until the SpaceX's Starship land the next gen Mars Helicopter that might be 10-20x bigger in 2-4 years.
tkinom··on Start a Business from Plastic Waste
I have seen hiking path way near water made from recycle plastic maybe 10+ years ago. Don't remember where now. Love to go back and check the durability of them after all these years. Curious about the cost also.

tkinom··on The Story of the SolarWinds Hack
There are defences for this: If one controls/monitors for every app in system for network access, as soon as any unusually network access are triggered, it is investigated and block.

In my home windows setup, only windows defender, firefox and chrome are allowed out going internet access in regular base. Everything else are blocked.

Windows update are only allowed when I in the mood for it (~once a year). Anyone can do this easily by control srvhost.exe 's internet access with windows firewall app.

tkinom··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
Google needs to start the "Google Mars" time-lapse database now.
tkinom··on The U.S. corn belt has lost a third of its topsoil
When spaceX arrive in Mars, I am sure "Google Mars" will start logging time lapse for Mars.
tkinom··on Redundant Against What?
I have designed/coded two redundant systems before.

First one is super complex redundant router done by 100+ engineers. All TCP states, BGP states, complete configurations were replicated to backup CPU. If the primary failed, power off, etc, the standby will take over, etc. When the failed unit comes backup, it become the new stanby. Demo works fine, but the company sold just 1 system for $200K. The company did sold for four hundred millions. It paid off my mortgage.

2nd is relatively simple done by me in 3 weeks including testing, etc. It is a system convert 48 channels digital MPEG streams to analog NTSC signals for analog cable plant such as Comcast. Xilinx power PC running linux. All configurations were sync. Auto switch over on power off, network disconnect, etc. The system can detect all failure conditions in 50 milliseconds. Very cool to demo - if you blink your eye and you will miss the system failure over event. Support in service SW upgrade - update backup to new SW, sync config over, force switch the primary and update the new backup to new SW with ZERO downtime.

The product was very successful - only one firmware bug found after two years in the field. Sold $100 millions+ to various cable companies. But the VC air drop a "professional CEO" and "scale" the company from 16 people to 300+ people. Did two more rounds and manage to burn the company to the ground and sold it for pennies.

Redundant system design are not that hard and can be simple. It is best to remember KISS - "Keep It Simple Stupid".

tkinom··on Reuters website goes behind paywall in new strategy
They should consider https://www.digitimes.com/index.asp 's model:

The news articles are free for a few days. After that, access to older articles require premium subscription. This generates eyeballs and ads revenue for the site especially for hot news.

They also generate the premium quarterly industrial reports which are very informative and marketing, product folks of certain industrial love to pay for them.
tkinom··on Samsung Announces 512GB DDR5 Memory That Is Twice as Fast as DDR4

tkinom··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
WHO should sequence all the Virus DNAs from that lab in 2015-2019 compare that with all the Covid sequences.
tkinom··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
If it is indeed "sloppy lab" leak the virus and we don't care, it will happen again.
tkinom··on The world needs a software bill of materials
I like to see OS capable of full auditable logs of

every app execution in the system (phone, mac, linux, windows)
every .so, .dll use by each app and their hash/datetime creation.

every files/dirs creation / write/read by which app
every socket bind and connect requests.
    and other privilege operations

There should be virus total type check on all app/.so/.dll.

There should be allow/forbid LIST for exec,file/dir access/socket, privilege ops access similar to typical firewall software - Not just for net, but also for app execution and files access.

"Default allow", "Default forbid - with log/notification" fully under user control.

I am very impress with their features. I am planning to buy couple of them, but I would never point them inside the house. Probably will put them in their own wifi network.

I built a home grow solution with RPi + Webcam + Google Drive with some python script. But the performance to upload Pics to G Drive was slow and the way viewing the pics uploaded to G Drive was not very convenient.

Reasonable airflow, Less chance for Covid spread compare to indoor hotel.
