tkdb··on Students Call It Hypocrisy
Education is perhaps one of the most multi-faceted areas to ask the question "how do we do AI right here?"

AI is better that many classes/teachers now at all levels at conveying the right information in the right way when the student is capable of using it well. This is not good reason to eliminate teachers or traditional educational systems.

That AI reads and writes well is not a good reason to allow students to not read and write well, just as technology negating the need for strong bodies to obtain food and achieve military defense is not reason to say there is no value in people having strong bodies.

I hope AI will put the right kind of pressure on students and teachers: If this (article, essay, etc...) is not important enough for me to write it, then why fake it with AI?

tkdb··on AI Is Being Used to Automate Both Sides of the Same Institutional Dispute
I'm observing similar "dead process" everywhere business chores are being automated.

For example: AI writes the contract (or adapts the last used contract for the present need). AI on both sides reviews and makes suggestions. Does AI give the all green signal before humans sign? Not at my company, but I would not be surprised if it's happening.

I see an increasing intolerance for humanless AI communication cycles. It should be identified for what it is, and completely rejected: meaningless.

The silver lining: Humans used to tolerate near meaningless communications of various types written by other humans. Marketing fluff. Blustery corporate exchanges. Distracting technical explanations. When AI writes a thing that has little or no meaning, it feels much more offensive, and more people decide to reject or avoid it. That's good.

tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
While the issue may boil down to coverage, it happens when my phone has full service and/or is connected to wifi. I'm using apps, can pull up youtube and use other high bandwidth apps just fine.

I'll get a text "why aren't you picking up? I tried calling 4x." I have no missed calls. The missed calls never appear on my device. In some cases, I call right back and I get through. In other case, I try calling and my call, too, doesn't go through. I switch to whatsapp and get through on the first ring, and the voice call via whatsapp works fine.

That is my setting, and has been across several devices, on both Verizon and TMobile. The ghost calls occur with both regular contacts and unknown numbers, seemingly at random (ie sometimes the new number comes through as expected).
tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
I'm currently on an iphone 17 pro, and I am usually one a phone that is within the latest three release cycles. I'm pretty sure I had a little of this before 5g rolled out, but I've seen a big spike in the ghost calls after 5g arrived.
tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
Possible? That people I call and call me every day, business people who I have dozens of calls with a month, and strangers (say a dentist office or new contact) all behave about the same made me think it was not as simple as over suspicious spam filtering. I also get a few spam calls a week, which both show up on missed call logs and sometimes leave voice messages.
tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
Thanks for taking the time to write this. This was basically my experience with Verizon across several years. As I said, I found T Mobile to be about the same.
tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
Thanks for this - there may be a few things I can try here.

>People don't use it enough, so let's try to save money by making them use it even less!

Isn't business ultimately responding to existential pressure? Examples abound of "what if we our product was slightly crappier, would we make more or less money?"

In any case, I'm not here to defend the idea, I mostly wanted to see if others are experiencing the same chronic underperformance I have over the last few years.

tkdb··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
Interesting. Another detail I should add: in virtually all of the cases where I have the silent missed calls, I have full or adequate service, and can otherwise use my phone. Internet browsing, apps, and as mentioned even wifi calling via whatsapp etc.. works fine.

Even so, in a scenario where I have missed a call due to spotty service, the expected behavior once I have service again is I see the missed call on my device. That's the aggravating part of this issue: I never know someone tried to call me.

tkdb··on Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls
I forgot to mention: whatsapp, facetime voice calls, etc... all seem to work fine even when the cellular calls aren't going through. So yes, that matches my experience.
tkdb··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
Fun write up, lovely irony (if your work did actually help AI auto-reject you).

If I was you, I would probably feel similar "you used my project, you probably want to hire me!"

But there's a logical fallacy there.

Your creation being useful to a person or company ≠ you being a fit to work with/for them full time.

Still, you deserved human eyes on the question from their side.

tkdb··on Wired Called Our AirGradient Monitor 'Not Recommended' over a Broken Display
Open source performs better, but is less convenient/accessible than a polished consumer product with inferior technical chops?

Even ignoring the broken display, which I think is a red herring here (it would be relevant if this unit had a pattern of quality issues or failures indicating systematic production issues), I think that's the story here.

I appreciate the response from airgradient, assuming it's all true.
