Heh, like how Teledyne makes showerheads and Honeywell makes thermostats.

tkanarsky··on Things You Can Do with KDE Connect on Linux
Tailscale works great for this use case, in me experience. Very plug-n-play.

Hah, there's a subreddit r/thatsabooklight dedicated to stuff like this.

Some previous conversation, I forget what exactly. When you tap the "new conversation" button it displays a message to confirm context was cleared

Bing also fails on this one:

tkanarsky··on GPT-3 is much better at math than it should be
For what it's worth, Bing answers correctly and unceremoniously (although i had to reframe the question as a riddle with words, as the word 'string' seems to trigger it's anti-code-completion guardrail)

If you have attic access an attic-mounted dipole is also quite a good choice.

He's a downright clever guy who knows exactly what he's doing to maximize entertainment value, and, by proxy, clicks and therefore revenue. He was on the Lex Fridman podcast a few weeks back, pretty good listening.

tkanarsky··on Moving my PC into my rack in a 2U case
Yikes. Probably such a niche product that they slap a pretty beefy FPGA and some off the shelf NICs together which can't be good for the BOM cost haha.

On a similar note I recently worked with an adapter that carries USB 2.0 over a cat5 cable. It doesn't even do that good of a job -- jitter is pretty high, which makes it useless for our use case of controlling a laser cutter live from a host computer -- but guess how much it costs? $736! https://www.blackbox.com/en-ca/store/product/detail/usb-20-e...

You could also throw a Thunderbolt interface card in it and fish a 50m optical tb3 cable through the walls to a dock on your desk :)
tkanarsky··on We Found an Neuron in GPT-2
What specifically causes the output layer to trickle-print the response like that? I thought it was a skeumorphic effect to simulate a human typing out an answer slowly.

tkanarsky··on Show HN: Open-source OAuth service for 40+ APIs
I think it's pretty great for hackathons and other situations when you need to crank out an MVP without worrying about the authorization flow logic too much. Of course, once you have the bandwidth to make a proper backend you can graduate to your own OAuth logic

tkanarsky··on Russhian Roulette: 1/6 chance of posting your SSH private key on pastebin
Oh, I was under the impression that PIV referred to the smart card protocol and PGP was an application making use of that protocol, something like TCP and HTTP. Looks like I'm mistaken, thanks!
tkanarsky··on Electrify America “fries” EVs at charging stations
Hah, yeah the EA cabinets are a bit messy inside compared to the superchargers [0]. Smells like they were rushing to get an MVP out without spending too much, probably many more COTS components in there and not as much thought put into harness routing and custom assemblies. I know EA sources chargers from multiple manufacturers; maybe some of them are better in this regard.

tkanarsky··on Russhian Roulette: 1/6 chance of posting your SSH private key on pastebin
I find that the PIV smart card stack is needlessly complicated if all you're trying to do is add a resident SSH key to your yubikey. Look at `ed25519-sk` [0], which is supported by default by recent versions of OpenSSH (and dropbear? idk)

Hah, provide the hash and have the backend crack it whenever it needs to call the api.
tkanarsky··on Solar furnace to melt steel at 2000°C for Swiss recycler
So if I recall correctly from HS chem, iron is being reduced in this case by the carbon in the coke. From a cursory glance at the electronegativity table, iron is at 1.83, carbon's at 2.5 and hydrogen is 2.1. Higher electronegativity = more attractive to electrons = better reducing agent so hydrogen will reduce iron but less efficiently? than carbon. I don't know if this means that more energy is required to get the hydrogen to reduce carbon, or if the reaction will just be slower, but the upside is that the only byproduct of this process is pure H2O.

Tiny nit: the labels on the Arduino headers are z-fighting when zoomed out -- maybe offset them a bit to counter loss of precision?
