tjwds··on Is Slack Down?
Yes, down for me, across multiple orgs.

Edit: now it's back, a handful of minutes later.

tjwds··on The Storm Hits the Art Market
The end of ZIRP definitely hit the contemporary art market — what the article is referring to — harder than the fine art market.
tjwds··on A simple 16x16 dot animation from simple math rules
When this was first released, I put together an homage to the music video for “Fell In Love With A Girl” by The White Stripes.

tjwds··on Directus – real-time REST and GraphQL API of any SQL database
Out of curiosity, what don’t you like about it?
tjwds··on Discover the IndieWeb, one blog post at a time
No question here, but I just wanted to add: I subscribed to the "daily random posts" feed in April 2022. Because of that feed, I've subscribed to some blogs, and even reached out and become "internet friends" with some of their authors. As well as, you know, just generally being informed/entertained by the work that you're collating.

So thanks!

tjwds··on Ask HN: Next best to incorporate other than Delaware?
I am not a lawyer, and you should consult one if you're not sure. My personal rule of thumb, which you shouldn't take as legal advice:

Basically anyone who I would want to give me money or to buy the company will require that the company be registered in Delaware.

If it's just a legal entity for personal protection, and I don't expect anyone else to be involved, it's cheaper for me to just use my home state.

tjwds··on This morning for no obvious reason, I remembered the Fuel Rats
Thanks for posting a link to the site; their Grafana dashboard was cool to see.
tjwds··on OpenZFS deduplication is good now and you shouldn't use it
Edit: disregard this, I was wrong and missed the comment deletion window.
tjwds··on RIP botsin.space
This is incredibly sad; botsin.space has been a steady stream of joy for me over the years. Here's hoping a bunch of alternatives pop up.

tjwds··on Height hunt – low bridges in the UK, and their signs

tjwds··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2024)

  Location: Philadelphia, PA
  Remote: Optional
Willing to relocate: Yes (Philly, RVA, SF, or NY preferred)
Technologies: engineering leadership, JS (particularly a fan of Next.js), & more
  Résumé/CV: https://joewoods.dev/resume
  Email: hnwhoishiring@joewoods.dev
  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tjwds/
I'm currently Head of Engineering, US at Fastmail. Previously, I worked in eCommerce, and before that, I managed the digitization program at a university library. I'm looking for my next opportunity; likely as a player-coach, but I'm open to basically anything on the management/IC spectrum if it gives me the opportunity to help build something. Even if you're not hiring, feel free to shoot me an email — I would love to have a chat if you're working on something you're passionate about.

tjwds··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
I am very slowly working on a non-profit community management / RSVP collection platform. Think of this as an alternative of the websites you tend to think of if you want to collect RSVPs for a social club or meetup group, but run and maintained by a Wikimedia Foundation-style non-profit.
tjwds··on Ask HN: Degoogling in 2024
This is, in my view, one of the primary benefits of using your own domain for email.
tjwds··on Ask HN: How to cope up with fear of failure before starting up?
In my opinion, there really is a lot of value in the Samuel Beckett quote:

> Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

tjwds··on My iPhone 14 Fell Off My Motorcycle and Told My Family I Crashed

tjwds··on VC Website for Hackers
`// I am so, so sorry for this code.`

Nice.

tjwds··on An odd discovery on Spotify
If you go to the playlist's "playlist radio," you can find even more variations; I figured > 100 was a good number to stop at. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4pyIM5We0dd01U4KQyVmkU

But my website seems to have disappeared, so I'll have to update the post later!

tjwds··on Hacker News “Who is Hiring?” top-level comments over time
I used to use zola hosted on Github Pages, but I wanted to improve the publishing workflow, and WordPress was a good fit for that. (Notes on the migration here: https://blog.joewoods.dev/technology/technical-notes-on-migr...)

Thanks for hugging my site to death! It's hosted on a $5 DO droplet and I'm honored to have this problem. https://archive.ph/AVbPV
tjwds··on Show HN: I built a cyberdeck just for fun
Awesome! Love the slot for the Flipper.
tjwds··on Notable items missing from English Wikipedia
I had a lot of fun putting my own version of this list together!
tjwds··on Off the Grid
I highly recommend the log of 100R's relatively recent passage across the Pacific where they put these ideas to practice, Busy Doing Nothing: https://100r.co/site/busy_doing_nothing.html
tjwds··on Ask HN: How do you use HN?
Seconding this, but using Feedbin as my aggregator and Reeder on macOS and iOS.
tjwds··on Show HN: A music player that creates real-time music videos
This crashes on macOS for me:

> … not valid for use in process: mapped file has no cdhash, completely unsigned? Code has to be at least ad-hoc signed.

tjwds··on Vestaboard – A smart display to connect and inspire
Fastmail has one of these in the entryway to our Philadelphia office. It's been a lot of fun playing with the API — so far, we've made an integration with our company's chatbot [1] to manage "board tokens" [2] which allow folks to post to it (without clobbering each other's designs); a web UI to create designs which can be posted using the bot; and a 'vesta show' command, which creates a composite image of each cell of the board to represent the current board state (e.g. [3]) so that our colleagues in Australia and elsewhere can participate.

It's a lot of fun!

[2] Token in the "arcade token" sense, not "authorization token"

tjwds··on Potential Cloudflare Outage
Ah, that probably explains the Discord outage, then!
