tjwds··on Show HN: Kanmail – An email client that functions like a kanban board
Very cool! It looks like the primary focus here is displaying the messages in multiple folders at the same time; I like the message opens where it has space to open.

The account management settings page mentions needing an application password for Gmail — you'll also need one to add a Fastmail account (it looks like it retrieves through IMAP and sends through SMTP).

When I added an account, the account's existing folders weren't displayed to me anywhere (I was expecting the sidebar), but it looks like you can add a column for an existing folder and it'll just work.

It also looks like the action of dragging a message from one column to another removes it from one folder and adds it to another, which makes sense for a kanban board, but might get a little weird with Fastmail's labels mode, where a message can exist in multiple folders! (https://beta.fastmail.com/help/receive/labels-beta.html)

tjwds··on Node v10.20.1 (LTS)
> Due to release process failures, Node.js v10.20.0 shipped with source and header tarballs that did not properly match the final release commit that was used to build the binaries. We recommend that Node.js v10.20.0 not be used, particularly in any applications using native add-ons or where compiling Node.js from source is involved.

Yeeeeesh.

tjwds··on Launch HN: Art in Res (YC W20) – Buy art directly from artists
Through friends, I've become a little acquainted with the art industry and how collections happen and get shown in the most general terms.

I feel like Etsy used to be a place where individual creators created things… and now it's mostly used by industry professionals with a specific vibe or aesthetic feel.

Is the thing that distinguishes Art in Res from something like Artsy that you're buying directly from the artist? How do you all plan to deal with, for example, galleries that might want to use or abuse this platform?

tjwds··on Citymapper
CTRL+F'd Philadelphia / Philly and no results, so:

I love this app for getting around Philly. It's spot on for planning out the best time to leave to get somewhere and I really like its UX.

I have saved so much time, hassle, and money when following its suggested routes … whereas with Google Maps or just my current knowledge of Philly transit I would have taken a worse transit option or just taken a cab.

Try it out!

tjwds··on JMAP: Modern Mail Standard
That sounds a lot like Fastmail to me!
tjwds··on The Balloon Boy Hoax Solved
The ending got really dark, really quickly, but this is what I got out of it:

It's heavily implied that the writer thinks Mayumi was telling the truth in her written account, despite what she and Richard said when they called back: that Richard asked Falcon to hide in the basement, and when he wasn't down there, they were legitimately concerned that he could have actually been in the balloon.

tjwds··on Show HN: Design System Playground
This is really, really great! Extremely intuitive and created great results for me.

Here's a few suggestions — please feel free to take them with a grain of salt:

* The "theme" section states: "then use the generated theme in your projects." It might be useful to be more clear that this is formatted for theme-ui on this page by linking to the docs.

* It took a second for the "What body font do you like?" jawn to pop up, so I scrolled down and only scrolled back up because things were moving around on the page.

* I use an admittedly obnoxious color for all of my personal projects (#9604f2) and the utility/extra colors that were provided weren't that great. It might be cool to have each of these colors in the "Here are your colors..." stage have a color picker — as well as when adding your own color.

* I really wish there was a back button instead of just a next button! I picked the wrong body font at first and had to reload the page to go back.

That all being said, I'm going to use the design system that I just generated pretty much immediately!

tjwds··on A Beginner’s Guide to Chart.js
> is all this trickery on top of a library like this one still needed?

If the library is imported in the way that the article recommends in step two, it's not actually loaded as an ES6 module. This code checks to see if we're currently acting as a module and accordingly makes sure that the library is available as a global object. See this link for some examples: https://devhints.io/umdjs

tjwds··on Show HN: Why you should not use feature branches
"Your feature branch is your own perfect garden and you can keep it clean and shiny. But it is separated from the other gardens of your team. The more you work apart, the harder it is to reconcile."

But then, later in the article,

"It is 2019. If you don’t have a continuous integration setup that builds and runs tests automatically … then set it up yesterday. If you break anything you’ll be notified before it becomes a problem for the whole team."

Which, in my experience, greatly helps to mitigate the "it works on my machine" factor that arises from having a new branch for each task.

I appreciate the perspective, but I've found working with feature branches much better than trunk-based development. I'll take my merge conflicts any day. :-)

tjwds··on Ask HN: Is there any money in website design for small businesses anymore?
I work at an eCommerce firm with a design/dev arm. It's absolutely integral for us to be able to provide the full package for clients for a number of reasons.

Sure, straight-up "let me build your website" style sales may be an industry that's slowing down, but it certainly isn't for online sales or integrating any other services, so ymmv.

tjwds··on Digital Strategy for the Library of Congress
> why would the public require physical access if they have an online reading room.

Respectfully, I really disagree with this line of thought:

* Having digital facsimiles of your collection makes it more accessible and more available

* More people knowing about your collection means more foot traffic

* Some things about a collection can't be discovered from a digitized copy; having a record of the digitized copy encourages researchers to come in and see the real deal

* Maybe scholarship doesn't have to happen IRL? See Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad: a fantastic novel that was researched primarily online [0]

tjwds··on Nearly 1,000 Paintings and Drawings by Vincent van Gogh Digitized and Put Online
I manage the digitization program for a university library system (though I'm leaving this role very soon).

Yes, digitization is inherently a transformation and remediation of the work. This means that yes, something is taken away. But the value add, in my opinion, is so great that it's very well worth the money and time that goes into it.

My favorite work of art ever is Friedrich's The Monk by the Sea [0]: it fills me with emotion every time I see its digital facsimile. I hope one day that I'll be able to see it in person, but for now, it's accessible to me and billions of others to appreciate and enjoy.

> works are beginning to become 'instagram' friendly

Respectfully, I highly disagree with this sentiment. In my personal experience, I'm seeing just as many artists pushing back on reproducibility and the "prettiness" of art as there are folks trying to create works that look good on office walls or on Instagram stories.

> to hordes of people taking selfies with the Mona Lisa instead of appreciating it

Finally, again, I respectfully disagree. Who's to say that I can't enjoy art and take a selfie with it too? Many people like to add some sort of lens, most frequently their phone camera, to their experiences at concerts, museums, and galleries. I don't think anyone's qualified to tell those folks that they're doing it wrong.

tjwds··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit?
There isn't one that's going to do everything that reddit does, honestly. You might want to consider breaking down everything you were getting out of reddit that you aren't anymore and pursuing ways to find those things again.

I recently realized that I was spending way too much time on Reddit, so I started only briefly scrolling through Reddit once per day without reading comments, and relying more on HN, twitter, and a few blogs for news. To feed that itch to belong to a community, I started commenting on HN more, and continue to go on JQBX and belong to a few slack channels.

tjwds··on Problems with CSVs (2016)
Something that's being lost here is that this article is in the same vein as the seminal "Falsehoods programmers believe about time" [0] which contains quite a few statements which describe user error that developers still have to deal with (e.x. "The system clock will always be set to the correct local time.")

tjwds··on Another Tesla on autopilot steers towards a barrier
This comment from OP (beastpilot) is pretty frightening:

> Yep, works for 6 months with zero issues. Then one Friday night you get an update. Everything works that weekend, and on your way to work on Monday. Then, 18 minutes into your commute home, it drives straight at a barrier at 60 MPH.

> It's important to remember that it's not like you got the update 5 minutes before this happened. Even worse, you may not know you got an update if you are in a multi-driver household and the other driver installed the update.

Very glad the driver had 100% of their attention on the road at that moment.
