tired_man··on Google has patented a way to hunt down potholes
That's not the issue. Potholes are reported by many people. The issue the getting it repaired (properly).

I'm not knocking road crews filling potholes. There just aren't enough of you to keep up.

tired_man··on Netflix takes gamble with Epix film cull
Oh, yeah. It's not like there aren't half a dozen programs that will grab schedules and listings for you and even program a pcdvr.
tired_man··on Woman 'allergic to wi-fi' granted disability allowance by French court
She had symptoms, but how did he verify her claim that she felt them in the presence of electrical/wifi?

I wouldn't presume to say it's not possible to be sensitive to electrical emissions. I would like to know exactly how he made the determination that the woman actually felt symptoms that were only present if there were actually emissions. Some method where the emissions were covertly and randomly toggled on and off.

It seems to me that if she can't tell when the emissions are present, it may point to an underlying psychological problem.

tired_man··on Ask HN: What Would You Do If You Were Suddenly Wealthy?
Convert everything to precious metals and gems and emigrate with it to somewhere warm and free from US bs.

Being wealthy doesn't mean you need to live ostentatiously or even need share any of your financial information with your neighbourhood.

tired_man··on You Can Now Buy Special Ammo Just for Shooting Down Drones
Sorry, no. It's plain old goose rounds in novelty packaging.
tired_man··on Create a paper hardcopy of a PGP key. Crumple into a paper ball and recover
That's pretty cool.

Interestingly, most people using an Android phone can do that without the use of a computer or scanner.

The only caveat being that you may need the same QR app to decode it. I generated mine using QR Droid Private. Two other apps weren't ale to decode from the image so I'm assuming they'd also choke when scanning. QR Droid was able to decode it.

Man, that's got to be the largest QR code I've ever seen!

Did you catch this:

tired_man··on Ask HN: What are the things that you buy to save time?
That's it exactly. If I had four sheets of paper I needed to refer to while writing on a fifth, I sure wouldn't stack the four and shuffle them to see the next bit.
tired_man··on Woman 'allergic to wi-fi' granted disability allowance by French court
The results of a blind test would be very interesting.
tired_man··on Ask HN: What are the things that you buy to save time?
patch cables

IMHO, it is more so that one can see multiple windows without messing around with tabbing.

When dealing with desktop publishing as a technical writer, I frequently need multiple application windows, a terminal window or two, a client window for the app, my editing program and it's attendant windows, and several misc application to support my work (eyedropper, wireshark, screen cap, gimp, a text editor).

Three monitors would be ideal, but I just don't have the space on my desk. I'm considering a triple wall-mount, another monitor, and rearranging my space so the desk is pushed up to the wall.

tired_man··on Why You’ll See Some High Profile Movies Leave Netflix US Next Month
Why did they even bother mentioning this? I'd thought everyone knew they periodically cycle content.

That's why content will disappear for 5-6 months and then pop up again as "New On Netflix" when what they really mean is "we've just dusted this off so you can watch it again."

tired_man··on Your Body Wasn’t Built To Last: A Lesson From Human Mortality Rates (2012)
Report back when you have first hand experience with that hip. I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised.

There's a lot of chicken counting going on when the future is discussed. We have very effective pain medicines right now that many people can't have because of their potential for abuse.

I wouldn't count on anything until you see actual meds on the market that some group of "We Know What's Best For You" people hasn't declared evil.

tired_man··on Your Body Wasn’t Built To Last: A Lesson From Human Mortality Rates (2012)
If they're up for the pain, they have my support.

I presumed nothing. Have you ever experienced sciatica or back pain from herniated discs so intense you piss yourself? When even breathing hurts?

If you are able to zing happily along in your Rascal Scooter and ignore the pain, my hat is off to you.

tired_man··on Ask HN: Why astronauts don't see random images randomly?
The only things you ever see with your eyes are those things that have reflected light in your direction. They aren't random because you're only catching light coming right at you.
tired_man··on FBI: $1.2B Lost to Business Email Scams
So, why not simply sign ALL company email using PGP or other tool?

Your company, your rules. Just do it. Anything not signed by the right key is a spoofed email.

tired_man··on Ask HN: Why astronauts don't see random images randomly?
The light reflecting from the earth is what allows them to see the earth.
tired_man··on Scientists Replicated 100 Psychology Studies,Fewer Than 50% Got the Same Results
"Is it even sensible to try extract The Truth™ from two equally full buckets of bullshit"

That brought to mind the upcoming election cycle.

tired_man··on Anti-Web-Design Manifesto (2013)
You aren't alone in thinking that long lines reduce readability.

It's a fact proven out by years of practice in print.

tired_man··on Your Body Wasn’t Built To Last: A Lesson From Human Mortality Rates (2012)
You can have all the organ replacement you want. Once your drive train (feet/ankles/knees/hips, which ultimately impact on your spine) is shot, all you're gonna want to do is lie in bed.

tired_man··on Novel Self-healing material can handle a bullet
A much better solution than in Heinlein’s short story, "Gentlemen, Be Seated."
tired_man··on Novel Self-healing material can handle a bullet
That's pretty cool.

For spacecraft, I wonder if it would still seal if it has hard vacuum on the entrance hole side? Would the liquid be sucked into vacuum too fast for the reaction to occur where it's needed?

tired_man··on Ask HN: I need warm gloves that won't hinder typing
I hadn't known what glove liners were made from. A set or two of silk liners underneath nytrile gloves might be just right.

I'm going to check out the photographer's gloves, too!

I never re-adjusted to cold climates after the service. I spent so much time in Asia/Africa that if it isn't 85 or 90, I'm looking for a sweater. You'd figure after more 20 years my body would have would reset.

Thanks for the leads!

tired_man··on Ask HN: I need warm gloves that won't hinder typing
Ah, but the fingers are the part I need most. Thanks, though.
tired_man··on Artificial Cornea Mimics Natural Counterpart
That is very cool.

Does anyone know why corneal disease is more prevalent in developing countries? Is it lack of doctors? Medicine?

tired_man··on How a Ban on Plastic Bags Can Go Wrong
Eventually the paper bag makers will catch up and you'll see all the bag sizes I grew up with. There were large bag ("garbage bag" size), and a smaller version of that, a shorter version of that smaller version, a lunch bag size, and a penny candy bag (about a cup and half in volume).

I reuse all the plastic bags I get from the market until their shreds. There's a woodturner who lives on my street that recycles his plastic bags and the bottle caps from pop bottles into chisel mallets and pen turning blanks.

Paper is a step back, IMHO, but the plastic bags have to go. Too many people today litter and the things are blowing all over the place.

tired_man··on Shipwrecks Under Istanbul
That has applied to most of the main Islamic terror groups of the last 60 years or so. Do as I say, not as I do. I'm not saying that there were not any leaders who were very devout, just that way too many seem to enjoy a significantly more relaxed lifestyle than their followers.

But that applies to most of the politicians in my country, too, so I'm not throwing stones, just making an observation.

tired_man··on [haskell] Why we don't chuck our readers into web apps
You know, maybe I need a large print edition. I'd blame the mouse, but I know that no one will buy that.
