tired_man··on EFF to Court: Lifetime GPS Tracking Violates the Fourth Amendment
re: the committee:

As would I, but after reading and listening to the ridiculous statements and ideas from the current batch of "social justice warrior" types, I think the rapists would be back on the street quicker than they are now. Medical professionals are no more immune to this trend of lunacy than are any other people.

I agree that there are too many asinine reasons for being placed on the lists. Who is to blame for that? The lawmakers? The people who elected simpletons? The people who'd rather leave a sexual sadist locked in cage forever? Certainly not those who'd as soon have such a being immediately hung after sentencing.

If there was as cure them, a way to prevent it from happening, I'd be happy. But this is why there are so many no-go zones for sexual offenders. Everyone says NIMBY, but aren't willing to do anything concrete to fix the issue besides add even more laws upon the ones that already result in lax sentencing.

tired_man··on Mall of America Security Catfished Black Lives Matter Activists
Seems like it was a prudent move.

Lives Matter. Period.

tired_man··on Cyber-Terror: How real is the threat? Squirrels are more of a danger
I'd have to smile and nod politely if he told me that in person.

When a country must entirely cut itself from the internet to deal with incoming cyber attacks, I think the issue is much more serious that that politician understands.

For reference, take a look at Turkey. Anonymous hammered their systems until the government's only option was to completely shut down incoming internet access. That's always good for business, right?

tired_man··on EFF to Court: Lifetime GPS Tracking Violates the Fourth Amendment
How wobbly would it seem if he moved next door to you and your family?

There is a reason people scream to prevent parole and scream to have life sentences for sexual predators, my friend.

tired_man··on Company gives every employee $100K bonus
That's much nicer than the zero bonus news and "consolidation of working groups" news that my company announced.

Translated, they've got stuck something in the wringer. Time to start looking. It's always rough being in a company when it starts that swirl down the drain.

tired_man··on How the Washington D.C. Metro got so bad
"Let's also not forget that these employees quickly become unemployable in any other sector."

That also happens to people who get sucked into defense industries. The security is false for many, though, because they are expendable if contract issues arise. Even if the company has a civilian arm, the guys on the defense side get pink slipped.

tired_man··on Firefox 43 released with 64-bit version for Windows, better Private Browsing
I have more faith in the AV package I use than in Mozilla's part-time coders.

The people producing my AV package do just that, 8 hours a day, all year long. How much time does Mozilla's AV coders have? How much practical experience?

IMHO, Mozilla's FireFox team should concentrate on making the browser work fast and smooth. Period. FireFox has been slowly deteriorating for years while they've diddled with cutesy GUI crap.

Too many spoons in the pot.

tired_man··on Firefox 43 released with 64-bit version for Windows, better Private Browsing
Here's mine:

Stop forcing automatic updates.

tired_man··on Bombproof Liner Tested in Commercial Airplanes
It's taken a very long time for this development to come to fruition. There was a lot of discussion about some sort of blastproofing for the cargo containers after Lockerbie (Pan AM 103).

It's a nice idea. Containing a troublesome passenger inside something like that seems overkill unless they're wearing some sort of bomb.

The thing to remember is gases can penetrate fabric. If such a miscreant (it's HN, so I won't give my usual description) came aboard wearing a bomb with a chemical agent underneath it could leave the crew with a big surprise.

Edit: Fixed a copy paste error.

Watch the adventure when an Engineer takes up woodworking...

Mathias (https://www.woodgears.ca/) has made some incredible bench tools and woodworking projects.

tired_man··on My car was damaged with FlightCar and they don't care – here's the 3-month story
> Think about it this way:...

That's how rational adults act. The US is very short on rational adults under 40 nowadays.

tired_man··on US believes Russian jet was in Syrian airspace when Turkey shot it down
Remember that both aircraft are also moving at very high speed. It can take several seconds depending on range and vectors.

Does anyone know which missile they used?

This is troubling to me. Why didn't they just intercept and escort him out?

tired_man··on After the Paris terrorist attack EU seeks to restrict legal firearms
Well of course they are. Everyone knows that shotguns purchased in stores are much more dangerous than AK-47s purchased from a smuggler in a back alley.
tired_man··on 6 Ways Law Enforcement Can Track Terrorists in an Encrypted World
The article seems to forget that encryption isn't a requirement to perform evil actions.

Code words/phrases and various ciphers have been used to pass information and make plans for hundreds of years. They don't require any encryption whatsoever.

tired_man··on Rocket Fiber Launches 100GB/s Internet Service in Downtown Detroit
That cheaper price would be great. Tracking's not much of an issue for me as they'd only see me hit my VPN service.
tired_man··on Rocket Fiber Launches 100GB/s Internet Service in Downtown Detroit
That's not the issue with FiOS.

Their asymetric bandwidth offering is configured that way on purpose, it isn't the hardware. They offer symetrical bandwidth if your line a business connection.

I've had FiOS residential and business over the _same_ line (different times, of course) and it goes to the same CO.

tired_man··on Surveillance after Paris: We MUST now give our spies the powers they need
Really? But why?

The cow is gone so and it is too late to lock the barndoor.

tired_man··on Rocket Fiber Launches 100GB/s Internet Service in Downtown Detroit
Not cheap? Where does the writer live that USD$70 for 1Gbps seems expensive to him? I want to move there!

tired_man··on Free shipping from China
That's true, and it's great if you can use it. I don't care for their content delivery.
tired_man··on Seeing stars again: Naval Academy reinstates celestial navigation
That's a wise decision.

The stars, sun, and moon are hard to electronically spoof or jam.

tired_man··on California Craft Brewers Asked to Cut Water Use
Rather than asking brewers to cut back on a value-added product, California should ban all companies from bottling the state's shrinking fresh water supply.
tired_man··on Free shipping from China
Amazon isn't losing any money on prime shipping. If you look at "other purchase options you can see that many other vendors offer the same products for about $3.99 less, but charge for shipping. Amazon's merely hiding the shipping cost with an elevated retail price.
tired_man··on Patreon was hacked
Their site is infected with "Let's Make Big Fat Pages" syndrome with overlarge graphics and little text.

A few paragraphs work faster. I don't have time to watch a video on every throwaway site I visit from a link.

EDIT: http://www.noteslate.com/ is a perfect example.

tired_man··on Patreon was hacked
You could start by adding what you do, what your website does, and how it works to the ABOUT page.

The cutesy pictures on the ABOUT page say thousands of words of nothing.

tired_man··on Ask HN: What hours do you work? (and what country/job)

tired_man··on Ask HN: My manager is asking me to violate MS licensing. What should I do?
If you've reported your concerns in writing (email), keep a local copy in a pst and take it home. CYA.

I don't know how the situation is now (US or UK), but in past years the BSA could show up in the US with warrants and a US Marshal or two in tow to force an audit on their terms.

tired_man··on Ad Blocking: The Unnecessary Internet Apocalypse
likewise the number of firefox users.
tired_man··on E-Book Sales Slip, and Print Is Far From Dead
That may be, but inflated pricing on eBooks will put the publishers in the boat as the music industry. By your logic, there should not be any 99 cent MP3 files. They should all be priced as though they were 12 inch singles.

Files are files. Sell me something physical and it had to be created. Files? Nope.

eBooks are still being price fixed. Plain and simple. Even Baen admits to raising their eBook prices to match other vendors, even though they've capped theirs based on their own hardcopy prices. Whether there is collusion or not I wouldn't venture a guess. Before Mr. Baen died, I would say no.

Sell by volume and sell more.

tired_man··on Encryption might be the reason why we haven't heard from aliens
If they determine that the random signal contains any sort of information, even if we can't understand it, I think they'd simply be happy to have confirmation of another civilization.

Getting a chunk of signal with modulation or one containing repeated patterns would be a world changer.
