timthelion··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
Are you angry and negative about the negativity of the opinions expressed on the internet?
timthelion··on Ajit Pai is right
Obviously complying with net neutrality, unless the law is stupidly written, is trivial. Compliance simply means blindly passing on tcp/ip packets without looking at to whom and where they are going. The only way to fail to comply is if you actively stop a packet and say "hey there, pay a toll to go through". There is negative cost to compliance, failure to comply requires an extra layer of technology.
timthelion··on Origami-inspired soft artificial muscles
But a steel wire can be reeled in using a reel. And if we don't include the airpump required for these origami muscles in our "muscle weight" then we don't need to include the winch weight in the case of the reeled wire.
timthelion··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
This is a strange phenomena. In Prague some meetups have had trouble finding places to host, while others have had multiple firms competing to provide free space and food.
timthelion··on Radio Attack Lets Hackers Steal Cars with Just $20 Worth of Gear
I know that a button on the keyfob would work, but this attack could also be prevented with clock syncing, as the re-transmission of the signal will certainly take time. A simple timed ping (with cryptographicly signed time-stamps to prevent replay) would sort this out.
timthelion··on Brown University raising $120M to eliminate all student loans
Aren't there other expenses like maintaining the campus and paying for journal subscriptions and research equipment?
timthelion··on Why I don't support Net Neutrality
The experience of a small portion of poor customers who cannot afford fast internet and have trouble streaming at full quality and realize that they are not streaming at full quality and decide to do something about it doesn't typically interest large companies. People have bad experiences all the time. My parent in laws bought and paid for digital HDTV, and had a set-to-box that only delivered standard TV format. They didn't even realize that there was a problem until I pointed it out to them. And they aren't even poor and uneducated.

It's not like someone who has <10Mbs connection and finds netflix to be crappy is going to lawyer up and sue netflix and win.

timthelion··on Facebook deploys AI for early signs of suicide
Of course you are free to do so, but back in the days of daemon possession, most people were just as free to reject the claim that they were possessed. What mattered back then, was not the claim though, what mattered back then was that ordinary people would look at someone and think "oh he's acting weird, he must be possessed". And that "possessed person" would then be feared. It interfered with the process of empathy.
timthelion··on Facebook deploys AI for early signs of suicide
I'm worried that the field of psychology is gaining a monopoly on expression of feelings. We can no longer express happiness and sadness, anxiety and frustration, without being "diagnosed" in a horoscopic manner which has little or nothing to do with science and bears a great deal of stigma.

The psychological disorders of today are the occult of yesterday. We believe that one can become possessed by depression or anxiety. Possessed by psychosis, possessed by a personality disorder, possessed by PTSD, possessed by a history of child abuse. And we have to call upon the psychologists to preform an exorcism.

timthelion··on SpaceX raises another $100M
Well, Blue Origin is in a certain dimension re-writing rules. They are using a new more efficient engine design. SpaceX has been pretty conservative with engines if I'm not mistaken.
timthelion··on SpaceX raises another $100M
I'd pay money to never see pinterest appear in another image search result again.
timthelion··on What Is Bitcoin For?
Why would you ever sell real-estate?
timthelion··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
I find this especially weird given Facebook's incredibly lax approach to extreme right virulently racist posters in Eastern Europe. Like if Facebook, was censoring things that they found controversial, I'd get it, but it seems that they just censor randomly.
timthelion··on Why I don't support Net Neutrality
"who, if anything, is pressured to overestimate" um, why would they be pressured to overestimate. They don't want to scare away customers who would think "well I'm not sure if my internet is fast enough..."

HD video streaming is surprisingly not the most bandwidth intensive activity. Facebook is actually more intensive. As is online gaming. And HD streaming is especially easy when its done by netflix which already has a network non-neutral setup https://www.beet.tv/2013/05/netflix-2.html. You may think "well, that 10Mbs is the same whether or not it is being streamed from next door or across the ocean", but you'd be wrong, due to the fact that low latency network connections are much more efficient at using that bandwidth.

timthelion··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
Do you think that the America for Bulgaria Foundation's promotion of gay rights is somehow harming your economy?

"The privatisation therefore was more of an emergent act of saving the failed state enterprises. They were sold for pennies because they couldn't export their production and the domestic market was dire." I do not know the situation in Bulgaria, but in the Czech Republic, the enterprises which were bought by the elites and foreign interests were not failing, and several ex-communists have become USD billionaires by having "purchased" them.

timthelion··on Tutorial: Building a collaborative text editor over IPFS with Yjs in 10 minutes
I was expecting a standalone html file that could be run by clicking on it, or, due to that "same origin" b_llsh*t [1], at least served using any generic http server, not one which has to be specially configured and installed.

[1] I know the security reasons behind this, I just find the hassle to be a counter-logical irksome, and insecure in most cases, hack.

timthelion··on Tutorial: Building a collaborative text editor over IPFS with Yjs in 10 minutes
If it is decentralized, then why do I need node-js? Why do I need a webserver?
timthelion··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
Are you sure that money and life are not comparable? After-all, people spend all of their lives making money. People die of hunger. And to be killed is not so much a matter of a loss of life, everyone is mortal after-all, we will all die, it is a loss of time. And time is money, and money is time.
timthelion··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
It also doesn't work, because you cannot impose democracy. Imposed democracy isn't democracy.
timthelion··on Remarks on the Decline of American Empire
I would argue that the disillusionment in the Czech Republic not only the fault of the Americans, but also the fault of the former communists, who remained in power for the most part. During the privatization process the countries assets were sold to the corrupt ex-communists and westerners for pennies on the dollar. There is as much evil and profiteering from within as there is evil from outside.

Which NGOs are you talking about? What have these NGOs done to harm the countries?

timthelion··on Laptops Are Great, But Not During a Lecture or a Meeting
I just tested it and it works with icecat mobile but not Androids default browser. Which browser are you using?

Also, I haven't optimized for mobile with regards to "arrow keys" not being a thing on the cell phone. I'll probably have to add arrow buttons that are visible only on the cell phone or something. Perhaps a swipe...

timthelion··on Laptops Are Great, But Not During a Lecture or a Meeting
I agree.

While not a direct replacement for lectures, I've been prototyping an audio media which does not have these same disadvantages, called push to talk. You can find the prototype here: http://thobbs.cz/push-to-talk/index.html

Click on the first track, and then use the arrow keys to move through the essay. Note that you can rewind, review, pause to think, just like with text. But it is speech.

timthelion··on What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today
My point is, that this "everything's fair in love and war" attitude is without moral basis. It's not magically OK to be evil just because you are at war, and using wartime tactics when you are not officially at war is not worse than doing them during a war.
timthelion··on What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today
Is there any non propogandistic use of the word "terrorism"?
timthelion··on What Bikini Atoll Looks Like Today
US never declared war in Vietnam.

And since when did saying "I hate you, I'm going to war with you" make it OK to indiscriminately kill civilians.

ISIS has declared war on England. Does that make it OK for them to bomb the subway?

timthelion··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
Why would you be against adding another monitor. When I have two monitors I benefit from angling them so that each one is perpendicular to my face as I turn it to look. The larger the screen, the lower percentage of that screen is perpendicular.
timthelion··on What AlphaGo Zero teaches us about what’s going wrong with innovation
It is strange to read this, remembering how Microsoft has been lambasted time and again for doing so many interesting things with Microsoft Research and hardly ever taking any of them to the product stage. Is Microsoft unique in it's too much R and not enough D approach?
timthelion··on Drinking 3-4 Cups of Coffee Is “More Likely to Benefit Health Than to Harm It”
I usually drink just tap water, and what I've noticed is that over time I will get sick and feel really dehydrated. I then buy myself a 1.5 liter mineral water from the store and feel much better. I wonder if the "tap water" that we drink is actually the "natural state of water", or if people aren't used to consuming water with a higher mineral content in nature.
timthelion··on Teenagers are growing more anxious and depressed
That's a bit of a culture shock for me. Because talking on a cell phone is taboo in the Prague mass transport system. People will occasionally have a short and apologetically whispered phone call, but if you talk out loud old people will stare at you angrily and may even psht.
