timthelion··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
I do this too. And post the sessions publicly when I can, which you can see here:

- and here https://veganbuddies.org/blog/

Kind of funny when I record 2 hours of getting nothing at all done and screaming in frustration, but there we are. Call it radical honesty if you will.

I find it absolutely exhausting though. I max out at 5 hours a day if I talk the entire time.

I find adding a blog post for each screencast to be even better for productivity. I often find myself going back to them to reference something.

SEEKING WORK | Remote ( I'm in the EU)

Hello. I am a freelancer specializing in old and poorly documented code bases. I can dive into a code base, document it, write tests and provide professional on-boarding videos to get your team up to speed. I can work with junior developers to teach them how to use the code base. By bringing old code bases up to modern standards I can help you harvest the valuable IP assets you already have, driving new growth and stabilizing the technologies upon which existing revenue streams rely.

With my help, I can transform a stagnant legacy product into a proven technology which you can believe in and sell.

timthelion··on Ask HN: Server side rendering is now a good idea?
With regards to security, obviously it is possible to get security wrong when exposing APIs to the front end. That said, when it comes to the risk of your server being compromised, the less code running on your server the better. So if you can move some of that code onto the client, then it is a pretty significant security win. Except for XSS and DOS attacks, client code by definition doesn't bring any security risks. It is UNTRUSTED. So if you mess up your react code, there is very little that can go wrong. If you mess up server side code, however, you are asking for trouble.

I believe that minimalist, well audited REST or Websocket protocols are FAR more secure than server side rendering. How can you audit the entirety of your UI for security flaws? How can you analyze data leakage formally over such a large surface area? You cannot. But you can analyze 10 REST endpoints passing JSON. You can analyze RPC over websockets. Often times such specifications can fit on 4 sheets of printer paper. Take it on the train with you. Print out a copy and look for security flaws while you're on the toilet. You can't do that with server-side rendering.

I guess if there is not much data-flow both ways, then server-side rendering could be much more secure. For example, if you have a page live rendering stock charts on a news site. One that is complex but doesn't allow for much configuration. Server side rendering would be more secure. However, if you are creating something like a CRDT based shared spreadsheet that supports formulas, server-side rendering could basically mean that you are giving untrusted clients the ability to run Turing complete code on your server ;) . You'll be far better off having as much as possible on the client and as small and simple a protocol as you can manage between the front end and the back end.

Basically, security wize:

- If drawing the page requires a huge number of data points to create a visualization that the client cannot interact with much, then server side rendering reduces the attack surface (you're just sending display information).

- If the page allows for a lot of user control over the data, you increase your attack surface by processing more untrusted information server side.

timthelion··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
Not my decision but a previous org invested years in a custom CRM system. Huge waste.

On the other hand. For a number of years we were running AWS manaaged redis. Way worse inspectability, worse performance, worse everything than just running it ourselves. And a tad more expensive too. It's easy to think "oh I'lljust buy it", but any time there is tight integration, things get hairy quickly...

timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
I agree that layoffs will lead to new companies being formed. I'm not convinced that the self driving car thing will happen in the US. I think the US will be slow due to the high cost of american life and regulations. I think it will happen in Asia though.
timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
I think that on #4 it is a bit bold to point to microplastics. However, I agree that human mental health is in decline due to environmental factors (as well as electronics use).
timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
USD is the strongest its been in a decade though.
timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
I strongly agree about the CRISPR babies. I'll eat my shirt if there aren't already hundreds if not thousands of CRISPR babies already, modified in secret.
timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Note: regarding my prediction about cis-women taking testosterone. I really don't know enough about medicine to predict that T would help/hurt cis women in business/tech and that is NOT what I am predicting. I am only predicting that there will be a small movement that DOES believe it helps. And among any small movement of people who try to be successful a few succeed. There are both successful people doing the RAW paleo diet and successful people doing the MANA/Soylent vegan meal replacer diet.
timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Technology:

Two seat fully self driving cars will become popular in Asia. They will arrive at your house with a dinner table loaded with Sushi and alcohol. They will be used for dating and business meetings rather than transportation.

timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Health:

- A series of videos will be released purportedly showing a set of prominent and wealthy US individuals arranging to have their own children genetically engineered for greater intelligence and height. These videos will seam to show that at least one US billionaire believes in eugenics. The New York times will cite expert analysis claiming these videos are deep fakes. A large portion of the population will believe they are real.

timthelion··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
AI:

- Composable language models will allow millions of people to collaborate on building/training AI without needing unusual GPUs or supercomputers

- Large numbers will be prime factored using guesses generated by giant "AI" statistical models. No one will understand why it works.

- The internet is flooded with AI generated non-sense

- Search engines are forced to limit the sites they search to ones with verified human generated content

- A new social network will form in which friend / connection requests are processed by passing physical business cards

- Physical business cards have a renaissance as a cottage industry

Health:

- Both ADHD and Autism will be shown to be largely caused by pollution. A group of wealthy Californians will build a small city of giant greenhouses with filtered air for their children to grow up in.

- Personal air quality monitoring devices will become ubiquitous in South Korea. At least one of these devices will claim to be able to detect viruses in the air. In 7 years The New York times will write a long form investigative journalism article about how the claim of virus detection was a giant fraud supported at the next to highest levels of government.

- There will be a small movement of cis-gendered woman who take testosterone believing it helps them better compete with men. At least two of them will be very successfully in a non-athletic field to great controversy. At least one of them will publicly suffer severe health consequences.

Military tech:

- Ukraine will develop a new inexpensive, mid tech, light weight weapon that changes warfare significantly

Economy:

- The tech jobs market will continue to crash for 4 months. Meanwhile, companies will still need their software maintained. Senior developer compensation will paradoxically increase.

Political:

- Ukraine will retake all but the eastern most sliver of Donetsk and Krym

- India will invade China to appease a large and violent nationalistic movement. They will take approximately 1.2 kilometers of barren mountain terrain. Every one will talk about it as if the world is ending. There will be only two causalities.

- Long term energy sovereignty will become a dominant political theme

- Biden will spend 3 weeks in the hospital

timthelion··on Cinema’s greatest scene: ‘Casablanca’ and ‘La Marseillaise’
Hmm, interesting. A shadow ban. I agree that my first comment was too without substance. However, I feel that the entire thread was rather without substance.

I don't really see the problem with the second comment though, or how it is going "full Hitler". Godwin's law doesn't apply to discussions that are literally about WWII. Yes, it may be negative, but is negativity wrong in of itself it if my negativity is backed up by rational discussion?

timthelion··on Cinema’s greatest scene: ‘Casablanca’ and ‘La Marseillaise’
"La Marseillaise" is the French national anthem. Here are the words in English:

"Arise, children of the Fatherland, The day of glory has arrived! Against us tyranny's Bloody banner is raised, (repeat) Do you hear, in the countryside, The roar of those ferocious soldiers? They're coming right into your arms To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

To arms, citizens, Form your battalions, Let's march, let's march! Lest an impure blood Soak our fields!

What does this horde of slaves, Of traitors and conspiratorial kings want? For whom are these vile chains, These long-prepared irons? (repeat) Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage What fury it must arouse! It is us they dare plan To return to the old slavery!

To arms, citizens...

What! Foreign cohorts Would make the law in our homes! What! These mercenary phalanxes Would strike down our proud warriors! (repeat) Great God! By chained hands Our brows would yield under the yoke Vile despots would have themselves The masters of our destinies!

To arms, citizens...

Tremble, tyrants and you traitors The shame of all parties, Tremble! Your parricidal schemes Will finally receive their reward! (repeat) Everyone is a soldier to combat you If they fall, our young heroes, The earth will produce new ones, Ready to fight against you!

To arms, citizens...

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors, Bear or hold back your blows! Spare those sorry victims, Who arm against us with regret. (repeat) But not these bloodthirsty despots, These accomplices of Bouillé, All these tigers who, mercilessly, Rip their mother's breast!

To arms, citizens...

Sacred love of the Fatherland, Lead, support our avenging arms Liberty, cherished Liberty, Fight with thy defenders! (repeat) Under our flags, may victory Hurry to thy manly accents, May thy expiring enemies, See thy triumph and our glory!

To arms, citizens..."

It is a patriotic military song about defending France from attackers. It's not fundamentally different from many other such verses in the anthems and patriotic texts of competing nations. The Quran contains similar wording when describing calls for Jihad to defend the fatherland.

While the Nazi's were evil, that does not mean we should be brought to tears by any nation which stood against them. Stalin's propagandists also wrote hymns which brought tears to many a Russian's eyes during and after the war.

And France was far from perfect at the time of WWII. Hitler is still admired by a large minority of Arabs because the Nazi's helped "liberate" former French colonies! [1] I'm not picking on the French here though. My point is, that we shouldn't be confused in our passions into worshiping "something anything so long as it's against the Nazis". While it is not true that "the enemy of your enemy is your friend". In a broader sense, it is not true that every ally is your friend. And you should not equate a champion with their cause.

Flawed reasoning: "Communism is the main force against capitalism, therefore if I want to fight capitalism I should become a communist."

More flawed reasoning: "Russia has the most troops fighting against Hitler. Therefore, if I want to fight Nazism I should become a Russian."

More flawed reasoning: "Hitler attacked France, therefore, if I lived in France and feel harmed by Nazism, I should love France." (Remember, France was all for getting rid of the Jews [2]. They just didn't like being invaded... )

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relations_between_Nazi_Germany... [2] "The evacuation of European Jewry to the island of Madagascar was not a new concept. Henry Hamilton Beamish, Arnold Leese, Lord Moyne, German scholar Paul de Lagarde and the British, French, and Polish governments had all contemplated the idea." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_a_Jewish_state#M...

timthelion··on 'I beat type 2 diabetes with 200-calorie drinks'
I don't agree that this is a breakthrough. Type 2 diabetes has existed for a long time. What we're seeing here is a new type of diabetes, type "obese with bad diet and constant inflow of blood sugar either from fat or from food" diabetes. This new type is obviously treatable. Real type 2 diabetes is neither an insufficiency of insulin nor is it an excess of incoming blood sugar. It is insulin tolerance developed within the cells and it is barely treatable by any method.

Nothing like some good old black and white, two sided European nationalism to bring tears to the eyes, is there?
timthelion··on US Military's Microwave Weapon Can Fry North Korean Missile Electronics
Would it be so terrible to end sactions against North Korea? Trade should rise the middle class North Koreans up, and the last thing a wealthy middle class wants is war. A well fed and housed middle class seems the best insurance against war possible.
timthelion··on US Military's Microwave Weapon Can Fry North Korean Missile Electronics
why would they need money? Why would they need to trade with anyone? It is not like North Korea is infinitely small and the earth infinitely big. The earth is a small globe, and NK is a region of that globe, one which almost certainly can be an autarky.
timthelion··on FCC won’t delay vote, says net neutrality supporters are “desperate”
How do you determine which party an appointee belongs to? Why didn't Obama appoint someone from the green party?
timthelion··on How brands secretly buy their way into Forbes, Fast Company, and HuffPost stories
How do you know which sites sell product placement? Are you %100 sure that NYTimes does not? What about theoutline.com? Do you KNOW that they don't?

I happen to be familiar with the book publishing industry in my country, and I know that many journalists will publish an article on a book written by a publishing houses PR manager, just to save themselves the effort of writing an article themselves. And these are the biggest newspapers in the country.
