My wife and I have lived in an RV for the last 5 years. We have met some amazingly strong single full-timers out on the road. It has got to be tough when something happens and you don't know another soul for hundreds of miles.
Yup. We are small enough that we all report directly to the CEO. Though anywhere I've worked remotely or not it is always me looking out for me. Never had a manager help with that.
Any talk of new clients, potential new business, larger future projects are all communicated to me once they are mostly already hashed out. This keeps me from playing a bigger part in the company and thus the work they throw my way is more on the grunt/boring side.
I love working remotely though and I'm not working in the tiny open office they have. I would be interested in seeing what the dynamic is like with a full remote team.
Also.. how are the towers going to handle this new "price war"? I've found them already overloaded in a number of places around the U.S.
Fairly simple and it people seem to find it really useful.
I know people love to hate on cell companies but it must be hell to try and keep up with demand that changes so rapidly.
I wonder how much current equipment is checked out daily and shared?
I know a couple that commuted from Half Moon Bay. Another couple also lives just south in a tight tight RV park.
I have made it a point to do the opposite of this. When I lived in a house I would think nothing of just "chilling" after work.. most days. Now I'm somewhere new and different. And tell myself "when will I ever get back to this place?, better go explore it while you can".
We (my wife and I) do it in an RV around the US and I know that a backpack lifestyle would not be for us. We have enough of a "normal" lifestyle with our own bed, a full kitchen, 9-5 hours.. that it works extremely well for us.
There are plenty of downsides. I miss having a large workspace to do hands on (non computer based) projects. Friends are harder to have. Weather sometimes is a pain. Connectivity. (Camped out at Starbucks at the moment since the Airstream in the parking lot was too hot today).
My wife does a blog: http://watsonswander.com
It only hit mid 60's today on the Maine coast.
Rural are possible but cities aren't cool with people setting up shop in uninspected old factories or lofts.
Kiwi looks to be about the same as Wmail but without the Google Inbox. (and it is a pay product)
Internet is all cellular connections. Verizon unlimited plan with AT&T on our phones as backup. We use a powered booster with an antenna on the roof. Interstate 40 is ~12 miles away from our current location, so the tower we are on was built to serve the highway.
We sold the big expensive house and moved into a 25' Airstream almost 4 years ago. I felt like I wasn't getting ahead. A bit stuck. I know she did as well. A bit different from the grandparent we still work a normal 40 hour week with normal (remote) jobs but have kind of checked out of the normal american dream.
