timkpaine··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
this is not funny or stupid, this is explicitly the strategy. Look at USPS, Medicare, Social Security. The point is to make elements of the social safety net and services unsustainable, so that they can be targets for cutting. The debt is the most effective tool in doing this, and Social Security is absolutely their target. They will do cuts long before they remove the tax cap.
timkpaine··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
line-item veto remains incredibly overpowered where permitted, e.g. Wisconsin
timkpaine··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
It will certainly be the "number one" issue, just as soon as democrats take control of the legislative or executive branch of government.
timkpaine··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I am building FPGA-accelerated polars at https://dau.dev

I'm also working on a "better" prediction market at https://crowdsource.sh

Have you ever reported an issue? I use perspective heavily on a variety of platforms both conda and pypi without any problems.

In case anyone wants to do one themselves (and learn Clojure), I think this was posted on HN previously: https://tombooth.co.uk/painting-in-clojure/
timkpaine··on A mole infiltrated the highest ranks of American militias
This statement is, of course, false. They did bring weapons.

timkpaine··on A mole infiltrated the highest ranks of American militias
The military->domestic abuse->divorce->family court->terrorism pipeline is quite strong, as evidenced in LV and NOLA this week. Rather than larping in your "local militia" while being slowly but surely radicalized, consider professional help. Everyone can benefit from some therapy.

i know its a joke, but the people that would’ve attended this would’ve never handled your portfolio. that would be the chase side.
timkpaine··on JPMorgan's Python training for business analysts and traders
there was nobody to hand it over to, presumably they replaced it with a more formal, complete training. It was an intermediate in a larger trend of teaching sales/traders to code https://www.ft.com/content/4c17d6ce-c8b2-11e8-ba8f-ee390057b...
timkpaine··on JPMorgan's Python training for business analysts and traders
This was for the markets analyst training program (all new grads hired into sales/trading positions) and also done with a handful of clients’ analyst training programs.

Sort of, this is the generic part that was combined with a lot of Q/A and examples which weren’t written down.

The empty “data” notebook was a bunch of interacting with Bloomberg to pull out data and do calculations, similar to what would be done in Excel. This is where a lot of the tangible, immediately relevant content was.

timkpaine··on JPMorgan's Python training for business analysts and traders
A quick review of the lecture notes shows its more just a recipe cookbook for some basic tasks...I don't really see how this is a university course.
timkpaine··on JPMorgan's Python training for business analysts and traders
I'm sure I'll get a thousand PRs in the next few weeks that change everything EXCEPT that link like the great Hacktoberfest debacle that never actually ended...

Frankel is a a developer I hold in really high esteem. IDK what I would do without LICEcap, which I use on a daily basis (and I'm sure it was just a little side project they through together to make debugging easier in a short amount of time). And REAPER is probably the only user-customizable and extendable digital audio workstation in existence. You can see the echos of Winamp in it...

timkpaine··on Obama argues unregulated social media is a threat to democracy
*that we know of.

A lot of information is coming out, and it looks very bad. It certainly is not as simple as "tried to sue".

This comment may age poorly.

timkpaine··on Obama argues unregulated social media is a threat to democracy
A few rednecks, millionaires, members of congress, family of Supreme Court justices, White House staff....

timkpaine··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
I spent 2 seconds reading through: "This polyamorous genderfluid witch is a preschool teacher in Florida. She’s so proud of herself that she discusses her gender and sexuality with 4 year olds"

"This is a mental illness"

"This teacher has been identified and is employed by @FergFlorSchools"

"3rd grade teacher at @GracemorNKC teaches 8 year olds about gender identity and then “wonders if anyone [students] will change their minds” presumably about their gender. These groomer teachers need to be fired. "

You say "just annotating videos", those political blinders you're wearing must be pretty strong...

timkpaine··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
This is a remarkably uninformed comment. Go actually look at what they post (some of the thousands they've deleted). They lie, slander, misrepresent, and dox repeatedly https://github.com/salcoast/deleted-tweets-archive/blob/main...
timkpaine··on HackerRank (YC S11) DMCA'ed the SymPy Docs [fixed]
I don't remember all the details, but one time at "a very large US Bank", a surveillance contractor saw "@largebank.com" email addresses in the public archives of an apache listserv and issued some type of takedown.

Apache responded by blocking all access from the bank's IPs including mirrors/other critical stuff...oops!
