timdorr··on TailwindCSS v2.0
Again, guard rails on those property sets. You are locked into a set of values and they are unlikely to conflict in some odd way.

You can also apply configuration changes globally that might affect multiple properties. If you're changing from px to rem for sizing, you can do that without having to go through your entire code base to update that. Or if you need to tweak a color, it's applied everywhere, including computed values (color variants).

timdorr··on TailwindCSS v2.0
For those complaining about dense HTML using Tailwind, the headline feature of 2.0 should be @apply for everything: https://tailwindcss.com/docs/functions-and-directives#apply

It lets you move all of those excessive class attributes into your CSS, where it realistically belongs. And that makes your CSS look a little more like CSS. But you get guard rails on it by applying a known set of properties to each rule. It's really the best of all worlds.

timdorr··on Brow.sh: a modern text-based browser
Note that this isn't a "true" terminal-based browser. It's built on a WebExtension running in Firefox that renders out the DOM as text to a Go-based CLI client. It's not a browser engine running in your terminal, it's more of a VNC over TTY.
timdorr··on Google Widevine Content Decryption Module DMCA
Looks like someone missed the most recent forks. There are still a number of repos not listed in the DMCA complaint that have the extension content: https://github.com/tomer8007/widevine-l3-decryptor/network/m...
timdorr··on macOS Big Sur
Nope, they aren't providing emulation of arm64 on x86_64.
timdorr··on Remove auto renew from my account
I dropped TeamViewer after their security and pricing shenanigans, and switched over to AnyDesk. Same thing, but free for personal use (cheaper for commercial), easier to use interface, and what seems to be higher quality software.

timdorr··on Nokia selected by NASA to build cellular network on the moon
As usual, The Onion's take on this is fantastic: https://www.theonion.com/nasa-builds-4g-tower-on-moon-tastef...
timdorr··on Face ID and Touch ID for the Web
This is a part of the Credentials Management API / WebAuthn API: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Web_Authent...

They already support this for things like FIDO hardware keys and other biometric hardware. It's also supported by Firefox.

timdorr··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
Does anyone know where the source code is hosted? If they forked that project, doesn't it need to be made public?
timdorr··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
They supposedly use Keynote, but I think with these presentations it's more likely custom motion graphics in After Effects or possibly Final Cut Pro if Apple is imposing in-house software.

timdorr··on Palantir goes public but founders will have control for life
Can no longer edit/delete because I've been downvoted, but yes, this is no longer public. Sorry about that!
timdorr··on Palantir goes public but founders will have control for life

timdorr··on Pixel 5
The 5 also has 2GB more RAM, 200mAh more battery life, a 90hz screen with more contrast (1M:1 vs 100K:1 ratio), aluminum vs. plastic body, and Gorilla Glass 6 vs. 3.

It also looks like the 4a 5G has two sub-models for different networks, whereas the 5 has them all in one model. So if you desire more portability between 5G networks, the 5 is a better option there.

That's pretty much all I could see as notable differences. Not saying any of that is worth the price difference, but perhaps it explains it a bit. I am definitely going to wait for the inevitable Black Friday deals they do shortly after release. They discounted $200 in past years, which makes the 5 much more palatable to me.

timdorr··on Man dies from eating more than a bag of liquorice a day
Well, this is just wacky: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7311916/

So, I guess take some potassium with black licorice and you'll defeat COVID-19!

timdorr··on Civilization VI UI, but made in Webflow (a no-code tool)

timdorr··on Docker update ToS: Image retention limits imposed on free accounts
Yes, you need one to download. Note that you'll get an auth prompt for this Registry API URL:

> "code": "UNAUTHORIZED", "message": "GitHub Docker Registry needs login"

timdorr··on Docker update ToS: Image retention limits imposed on free accounts
Not an SSH key, but you do need an access token:

timdorr··on Take Gitlab to the command line with GLab, an open-source Gitlab CLI tool
There is also the extra helpful hub: https://github.com/github/hub

It is a wrapper around git (you can alias it to the git command) that adds GH-aware things, like checking out a PR by URL or number, or opening up the repo page with `git browse`.

timdorr··on Show HN: I built an After Effects for dummies
I completely agree. I'd love to pay for this on a per-seat basis. $50-100/mo/seat seems about right here.

I also don't know if including storage in the pricing is helpful. It might make more sense to represent that in time. If this is being sold to users too inexperienced to use AE, then the idea of bitrates and pixel resolutions probably will be foreign to them. But time is something everyone knows and can easily reason about.

You might also experiment with completely removing that restriction. Storage is cheap and hosting video isn't really a huge value add. The features and functionality are the real selling point, so price on those things and the real value you offer to users.

timdorr··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
One of my neighboring IPs distributes child pornography according to this site, which is just fan-fucking-tastic. Anyone know how far Comcast distributes IPs on the same subnet geographically?

timdorr··on Why Go's Error Handling Is Awesome
Go errors are a specific type and that type is extensible. You can attach additional data to an error, and in recent versions of go you can wrap errors in other errors. You can do instance checking against an errors.New error, or do a type check against the kind of error you get back. This ultimately gives you significantly greater control and functionality over error codes.
timdorr··on Algolia introduces pay-as-you-go pricing for search
They say you can keep your current pricing forever:

> Finally, if you’re a current Algolia customer and are happy with your plan, that’s great! You can remain on your existing plan indefinitely.

timdorr··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
I have both the Quest and Rift S (previously a Rift and DK2, along with regular usage of the Vive). I would say just get the Quest.

For PC-backed graphics and exclusives, you can use Virtual Desktop with the sideloaded unlock to do wireless streaming or use Link for a hardwired experience.

The Rift has better quality screens and optics, but the Quest has a higher FoV and I find that ultimately wins out for overall experience.

The hand tracking stuff is very cool, extremely well done, and a bunch of stuff is coming down the pipe for it right now. It's supposed to come to the Rift too, but for now Quest has the advantage there.

I will probably end up selling my Rift at some point. I got the value of playing Alyx at full quality, but don't consider the minor IQ loss with streaming to the Quest to be that much of a blocker. I can do everything with the Quest, so it's the system for me.

It also doesn't support custom domains, just @hey.com addresses:

> Can I use my own custom domain with HEY?

> Not yet, but eventually you’ll be able to set up email@yourdomain.com. Until then, everyone who uses HEY will get a @hey.com email address.
